Hisui - Heavens Tear wrote: »Nuh uh. Unless you solve my mini cryptoanalysis problem.
I want to send a love letter via snail mail to my girlfriend. But the mail-man is Hong and he would tear open every one of my mail from and to my girlfriend in order to read them.
In order for Hong not to read them, my girlfriend and I each bought a lock with its own unique one-of-a-kind-unreproducible key to "lock" the letter in a box. She cannot give me her key and I cannot give her mine. Is there a way to safely send the letter to her without Hong discovering the content?
You need to be more specific what I can or can't do. But here is my attempt at a cookie:
Have your gf mail you her lock box which is unlocked. (I assume Hong isn't smart enough to lock it. Yes, thats a big assumption) You put your letter inside the lock box and lock it. Send it to your gf. She opens the locked box with her unique key and gets your love letter.0 -

Pretty close but no cigar. Your method is nice but it still makes your gfs mail vulnerable to interception because she never locked it. There's a better way b:chuckle
I can give you a hint that it is related to internet protocols.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]

Since it's a "mini cryptoanalysis problem", I guess you just have to code the letter, and give the "key" to your code to your gf (by email, phone,...) so she can read it? Just don't lock it.
You wasted your money on locks, since you can't lock her lock, and she can't unlock yours if you lock it. b:surrender
Another way, without the cryptoanalysis part:
Have a box with a thin false bottom. Under that, put the love letter. Ontop of it, put another "love" letter (you can include a carebear plushy). Don't lock the box. The fake love letter should be a boring one saying "the weather is nice" and stuff like that. The lack of drama of that letter will bore Hong so much he'll put it back in, then deliver the package as fast as he can so he can get his drama dose soon. He won't ever read the real love letter. b:victory

okay, let me be a little more specific...
your gf mails you her empty lock box which is unlocked. You put your letter in her empty lock box and lock it. then mail it to her. your gf has the key since its her lock box, so she opens it.
This is analogous to the public/private keys used in encrypting messages. The public key being your gf's locked box and the private key being your girlfriend's unique key. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public-key_cryptography0 -

Actually its not the same as that. This is a much simpler problem and requires no knowledge in cryptography. Nor do you need to know about pub/priv keys.
If you want to use that pub/priv key tho, it doesnt work here because the boyfriend is not the only one who can mess with the "public key" which is the lock in your example. The interceptor, Hong, can take your gf's box, put in a timed bomb and send it back to your gf with it locked and she wouldn't be able to tell if the package is from you or Hong. That wouldn't happen in a real key cryptography situation, where only the bf's private key and pub key combined can open the box.
BUT ANYWAYS, its not complicated like that I am basically trying to prove to u that there is a better way to guarantee safer information delivery.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]

I don't see how this will work. If Hong has the ability to fake mail and send it back to the sender, there is no guarantee that your mail will ever reach your gf. Go pk him and hire a new mail man.
Side note, more jokes please! I need a few laughs.0 -
LOL here is the correct answer to ensure safe mail transfer without Hong ever being able to look into your package.
1. You put your love letter in locked box, lock it up, and send it to your girlfriend.
2. Your girlfriend receives your box and puts her own lock onto the box, and sends it back to you.
3. You receive the box back and uses your unique key to unlock your own lock. Then you send it back to her.
4. Your girlfriend receives the box again and unlocks her own lock to finally receive the letter.
This way, the message flow between you and girlfriend will not be compromised. Nor do you have to be lame and ask your girlfriend to mail you something beforehand so you can mail her a surprise love letter b:chuckle[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]

How about you just put a fake letter in the box which is actually a bomb. Have Hong open it thinking he is intercepting the letter and BOOM goes Hong. Safe delivery from now on. b:laugh[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]0

She doesn't have YOUR key, therefore she can't open the box to put her own lock inside. You fail at your own riddle. You've been Honged b:laugh[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]

She doesn't put her lock inside. She puts her own lock ON the case. So at that point you have two locks on the box[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]

oh. didnt realize you can add mroe than one lock onto the box. in that case, Hong can add his own unique lock to the box...and **** you over. lol.0 -
