If you are not holding aggro well, the answer may be to ask whether the cleric is playing their part to let you keep aggro.

If you are talking about normal mobs, this probably does not matter. I pair up with a mage sometimes and we have aggro swinging back and forth (because he hits VERY hard but VERY infrequently). This turns out to be a slight advantage because the mob wastes a second or so swinging between us. But, it also sometimes leads to me chasing the mob to get in a position for a hit [which would be less of an issue if I was a spear-type and had more range naturally and in my skills].

Where you care about aggro is with bosses and in instances where the mobs are elite class, so they take a lot longer to kill and can 1-hit a squishy class like a cleric (unless the cleric is really skilled at the defensive spells - shell, seal, ...) For most outdoor bosses, the cleric can avoid a lot of the problem by flying while healing (if they can stay out of range of boss range/AOE attacks and still heal). For instances, there is some advice on the cleric forums suggesting that the way you cast heals affects aggro. There is also a potential problem if you have too many mobs go hostile and the tank is not keeping up hits on all of them [which is easier if you have the 1vMany skills of an axe-type ].

Look into whichever of these is relevant for your aggro-loss problem.

As for the DPS debate, people have pointed out that axe is the best in 1vMany settings (TW, AOE grinding, holding aggro in the mob-infested parts of an instance). Spear seems to be a hybrid with some decent AOE and some good 1v1, but its main advantage seems to be range. Sword is mainly 1v1. Fist is maybe even more 1v1 (I don't really claim to understand Fist since it doesn't seem to be skill oriented). To give yourself the most flexibility to solve the potential problems your pairing will have in different settings, it looks like you should be looking to mix spear and axe. Use spear when you want range or have limited numbers of targets. Use axe when you want to control a crowd without them running off to mess up your cleric.

. However Spears dispatch enemies in the air much easier and are able to have a range of 48m when using double leap and Farstrike.

48m? How do you get that?
