Is this the game for me?

Hi all,

I'm considering making this my new game, I have a few questions about Perfect World from veterans. Knowing what's there and not there will help me decide if I want to invest the time or not.

Thank you in advance for your help. :)

1. Does Perfect World have fast-paced combat? I played 2Moons for quite a bit, and much preferred the fast pace of combat over games like WoW, LotRO, Rohan, WAR. If you're not familiar with the comparison, do the attack skills in PW have relaly long cool down periods? Do characters only have 1 or 2 truly useful attack skills and some of them are on long cool-down? (more than a minute) Can you gind in this game while you're half-asleep? If so, then the pace of combat is probably really slow.

2. Is there an auction house?

3. Is there an item "upgrade" system like in traditional Korean MMOs that is based on random luck? Do you need to apply some kind of item to a weapon or armor to make it better (+1, +2, +3, etc.) but the rate of success is "random" and the items degrade or break if you fail?
(I hate games with this kind of system lol)

4. What is PvE like? Are there a lot of dungeons and instances? Do you feel like there is a lot to do on the PvE side, other than grinding the same mobs over and over and over and over?

5. How long do dungeons/instances take? Are they timed? I'm looking for short instances. I hate the WoW model of raids/instances that take HOURS to complete. That does not fit my lifestyle.

6. Are hacks/exploits/scammers/botters/gold sellers common in this game?

7. How is the cash shop? Is it completely necessary? Are the items over-priced, too expensive in comparison with other games?

8. Do you think this game is friendly towards casual players who can pick it up for a 2-3 hours at a time and still get some where?

9. Are healers one dimmensional spam bots?

I know that was a lot to ask, you do not have to answer every question, but thanks in advance for any input.

    1. You can definitely grind while half asleep, but the same goes for all the "fast-paced" games you listed. There's definitely not 1-2 skills per class that are effective. The use of your characters skills and your knowledge of your opponents skills definitely affect the outcome of PvP combat.

    2. Yes, not only for items, but also for the micro-transaction currency.

    3. Yes, but there's ways to increase your chance of success or reduce the chance of failure.

    4. Compared to other Free to Play games that I've played, the PvE is PWI is pretty good. There's a lot of dungeons, and on top of that, high level players are encouraged to help low level players with them.

    5. Some are short, some are long.

    6. In other regions of Perfect World yes, but so far from what I've seen in PWI, little to none.

    7. Some will claim that you MUST spend money to get anywhere in this game, and those people are wrong. I have friends (who are not venomancers) who have bought anything and everything they've ever wanted from the cash shop, simply by purchasing currency from the Auction House. I also have friends who have reached 70+ without spending a single penny. There are Free to Play games out there that are DEFINITELY money dependent, but thanks to the systems in PWI, the economy is more transparent and easy to access.

    8. Definitely, PWI is what you make of it. It can be a casual game, or it can be a hardcore game.

    9. I'll let a cleric answer that one, but from my experience with them, no.

Thank you for the speedy response, very helpful!

I realize my wording on question #1 was confusing, I meant to say that the gameplay of games like WoW, LotRO, and WAR are games I would consider to be kinda slow-paced. 2moons is more on the fast-paced side.

    5. How long and short are we talking? Could you give me a range?

    7. Do venomancers require more cash shop dependency?

Thanks again, and I hope to hear others' input as well.

    5. Short could be 10 minutes (FB29), long could be couple hours depending on what quest objectives you're trying to accomplish and what kind of group you have. Keep in mind that usually high level players are actively seeking to help low level players finish their "FBs" or dungeon quests. High level players gain good amounts of EXP for helping low level players complete these quests/dungeons.

    7. Venos have the least amount of cash shop dependency most say, as since they are a pet class, they pay very little in repairs and potion costs. Venomancers also can tame rare pets which sell quite sell to other players, making them one of the richer classes in PWI.

5: There is one dungeon that will take you about 5 minutes, and others that will take hours.

7: Quite the opposite. Venomancers are the least cash shop dependant class.

As for clerics, we can heal as well as kick butt.

    <-- Cleric

    9. No, in contrast to healers in other games, Clerics are incredibly versatile here. You can add to the damage of a team as much as you can heal them, depending on what's needed most at the moment.

Awesome to hear about butt-kicking clerics. :) I love playing healers in games, but I like to hear that healers can do some damage too.

And as for 7. apparently I can't read, thanks for clarifying.

Thanks all for the input, would love to hear more....

And just want to make sure, the dungeons are instanced right?

The dungeons are not instanced in every game.... Rohan, for instance (haha, bad choice of words). It's horrible in Rohan, not only do you have to navigate the dungeon (which are repetitive and nothing but grindfests in dungeon-form :P), but you have to worry about people kill-stealing and about finding a good place to grind.

But based on people's comments, I am going to download this game and check it out tonight. :)

I can tell you that most people to whom I have showed this game to tell me its very similar to WoW but as I never played WoW I couldnt confirmed that.

    2. Is there an auction house?

Yes there is an AH and its so cool, its a new feature for me as there was none in my previous MMORPG.

    3. Is there an item "upgrade" system like in traditional Korean MMOs that is based on random luck? Do you need to apply some kind of item to a weapon or armor to make it better (+1, +2, +3, etc.) but the rate of success is "random" and the items degrade or break if you fail?

There is a refining system done with Dragon Orbs, not 100% sure about the degrading and breaking never heard about it if its ingame.

    4. What is PvE like? Are there a lot of dungeons and instances? Do you feel like there is a lot to do on the PvE side, other than grinding the same mobs over and over and over and over?

Between the spiritual cultivation quests, daily quest, normal quests and Dragon quests the grinding time is very limited. I'm now level 57 and havent had to grind to the point where I would get sick of it.

    5. How long do dungeons/instances take? Are they timed? I'm looking for short instances. I hate the WoW model of raids/instances that take HOURS to complete. That does not fit my lifestyle.

Yes the dungeons, called FB ingame are timed (10 hours to complete w/o failure) but you can also go in the instances to train/grind without being on timer. And you can "run" the FBs with a squad whenever you feel like it. In the Dungeons you either go with wines or unwined, when entering w/o wines the full mobs are present and you most than likely want to get all the kills while you are in there. If you wine a FB then you get rid of, I believe, 90% of the mobs fromt he start. That option would have an impact on the total time required to run a FB and also your level and the level of FB decide to run. There are more details to running a FB but I think I answered the question about time.

    6. Are hacks/exploits/scammers/botters/gold sellers common in this game?

I have been playing PWi for about 2 months now, I am a very active player and I, to this day, havent heard about any scams and/or hacks. Gold selling is permitted in PWi through the Auction House, another big asset for me :)

    7. How is the cash shop? Is it completely necessary? Are the items over-priced, too expensive in comparison with other games?

The Shop items are somewhat expensive but I can say that 90% of the items in the Shop are luxuries totally unnecessary to enjoy the game, Thre is a 10% that I feel are most to have fun ingame, i.e. guardian charms, spirit charms and training scrolls but thats me and Im sure people have different needs/desires :P

    8. Do you think this game is friendly towards casual players who can pick it up for a 2-3 hours at a time and still get some where?

Get somewhere? High level...maybe not, but for sure you will meet intelligent, mature and funny people :)

    9. Are healers one dimmensional spam bots?

Healers are indispensable in PWi, where there is "big action" healers HAVE to be present. Can a healer solo? No unfortunately :(

It was fun giving you a bit of feedback, hope it answers some of your questions.

    Have a great day :)

Other than bosses i have had no problems completing any of my normal quests or grinding alone. If anything it helps between heal spells, hp pots and a backup guardian charm i die very rarely
Healers are however one of the most expensive classes, you to the need of spirit charms to be effective in major boss battles. The trade in is your also one of the most NEEDED classes in a party so when its time to do your bosses and quests you cant solo everyone will want you in their squad.

    I started a cleric today, he's lvl 3 now. :)

I like the game so far, but of course, I've barely dipped my feet. One thing that is going to make me gouge out my eardrums is the music in the winged elf starter zone. Tell me it gets better? lol. I know, I know, I can listen to my own music. :)

Well once you get the hang of it im sure your imagination will wonderfully branch out and you begin to become obssesed with the game like most of the people on this game.

It will probably take you 1 or 2 weeks in a half to get to lvl 19 or 20
