I cant update!

i have been havin this problem for a while, and i just had my friend come over and he did this differnt way of doing it. but i dont know how to get a hold of him because his phone is shut off, and yes im trying to manual update, but it usually fails, and it takes a hour just to download one, i remember this one time i changed the download location from auto or something.... but i dont know! and i have had this problem every single update! please help! i finally might just give up if i have to b:surrender
