Gears have elemental resistance. Is it for magic only or it also applies for physical attacks from elemental monsters

Generally from what I hear, physical attacks from elemental monsters are mixed between phys and magic damage, I've heard people go as far as to say that barbarians wearing robes take less damage on 90% of enemies then barbarians in heavy armor.

This is a very good question but I suspect it only protects against magic. The biggest issue with this game is its almost impossible to tell what a mob is actually attacking with. i wish the combat log option was more descriptive. If it said xxxxx fireball hits you for nnn damage rather than you take nnn damage some of this could be figured out. I know from fake duel with other players to test gear options elemental gear does little to reduce phy attack.

I know anything that get close will use physical but many ranged attacks are also physical. Many things that graphically appear to be a arrows or a thrown object seem to do phy damage. These type of attacks do much more damage to my priest than things that appear to be pure magic.

Their regular attacks are mostly physical, but you can usually tell by the special effect it makes.
A green-ish wave flying towards you = physical.
Red-ish small explosion or red casting circle = fire.
Blue casting circle, blue water whirlwind or an ice block = water.
Poison, green casting circle, green-ish small explosion = wood.
Lightning, white casting circle, blue/white block of energy flying towards you = metal.

Earth is a exception here, it is usually hard to tell, since some ranged monsters throw rocks at you that do physical damage, but usually a monster that throws rock means it is earth element, also the brown casting circle or stone breaking on your head after being hit, all signs of earth element (exception for the ranged attackers i mentioned, and some arent even earth element).

What about the health drain attack the wolves/fish use? It has a fast charging red attack I thought was physical, but physical attacks are instant. : /
88 FIRE! An "anti-tank" projectile, accompanied by an AC-130 are on their way to ensure insanity.

Its not physical for sure, they do high damage on melee chars and very little to me.
I just havent figured that one, but im guessing it is either fire or wood, once i had lower resists on those 2 and the red drain would cause me a lot of damage.
