    I know this is a noobie question, but I'm struggling with it, too. Please answer someone!

    Let me be more specific.. Do you damage creature first, then click on tame skill, or click skill first, then fight?

    It's generally easiest to damage the mob down to about 10-20% Then release your pet or have it follow you while it's on manual mode. Then you hit the tame skill and it should capture any mob that has a green or yellow icon.

    You get the skill book after you do a quest that becomes available at level 7. Then you simply talk to the Pet Skill Trainer and select Tame Pet to learn the skill while you have the book in your inventory. You ALSO need to have at least 1 spot open in your inventory to be able to use the skill on a mob.
