Aoe pet question

Been playing for a whopping 2 days now and I've been reading allot of things about this class. In the guide, something is mentioned in the skills section about your pet being hit by your own aoe. Is that something I have to be aware of? Should I make it a habit that if I cast an aoe that I should pull my pet back before I cast?

    Pets can't be hit by your own aoe. Ever. <_<
