Make pets act more realistics by having them wander around while in town or have an area around the player in which the location of the pet can be random. Also have actions for commanding pet like stay close, stay, attach to leash(possible new item), and roam.

The wandering idea would be cool. Only in cities though, I wouldn't want my Shorttooth Kitten running around while I collect herbs or something. And I guess when you got to the enterance of the city your character would whistle and they would come running back to aid you on your next adventure.

Having leashes would look funny, as well. In battle do they magically dissapear or unhook? I think the pets should follow you according to free will, not leashes and/or spells.
