What is the Currency for ZEN?

I tried to find information about Zen on the site but couldn't see anything useful. When I enter cash shop I see that you purchase items with silver and gold instead of Zen. So what is this about? Do you have to change the Zens into Gold first?
And How much USD for Zens anyways. The help section on charing service is hopeless.

    $1 = 100 zen = 1 gold = 100 silver

    So if you buy $20 worth you'll get 2000 zen, which is 20 gold in the cash shop.

    Thanks for your information. Now I just have to wait till most of the cash shop items to come out to see what I can afford.
