How good are mages?

Alot of the games I've played recently, mages are somewhat overpowered combat-wise; it's my plan to become one here.
Is it worth it? Or for whatever reason are mages useless?
I'm just looking for a good aoe combatist.

    Sucks 1v1, useful in large groups.

    Over generalization of course, but it's mostly true.

    So mages won't be good solo :O?
    Hmmm, guess if this game is good I'll be around long enough to test most of them out anyways XD!

    good for pk, ea can be killed by 1 hits with mg +12 weapon

    mages are good pvp and pve, you just need to learn what skills you ha and how/when to use them. But that is the same for any class.

    Well.. The advantage of being a mage, is it got many skills and elements.. But because of this, you will quickly run out of money and spirit points.
