Element damage?

Most mobs have an element attribute (wood, water etc).
My questions is that do you suffer element damage when mobs use melee attack? In other words, when I am fighting a melee wood mob, should I use physical armor or wood?

    their melee attacks just do physical damage. the mobs element usually identifies what magic element attacks they have (if any) and what their elemental resistance and weakness is.
