what is Zen used for?

The title says it all. What is Zen used for? I checked the support site and I think I read something about obtaining gold and silver ingame as currency too but this third one is not very well detailed. So, what is it used to buy with?

    You buy it with real money, charge into Zen. Then buy items from the cash shop.
    To see and buy item from cash shop: Run the game, log in, log on you char, then press ALT + O.
