Magical weapon

Hi everyone, here's my question of the day :
I noticed that magical weapons (wands, staves, ...) are described as :
Physical damage xxx-yyy
Magical damage aaa-bbb

So... when I hit a monster with it, do I deal both damages? If not, how do I get to choose the damage type that my weapon deals?

    The Physical Damage is what's applied when you strike a creature with your weapon.

    The Magical Damage is what's applied when you cast a spell at a creature using that weapon.

    And I guess the damage of the spell is added to the magical damage of the weapon, right?
