The Internet

Now, I know this isn't about PW or anything related, but I figure I'd ask anyways because this is pretty annoying, and I can't find much/any info about it. So... my internet goes down from time to time. Usually when I'm recruiting people in my guild thread, and especially when I'm in the middle of a post. It's unusual, though... it works like this: Most every site known to man becomes unreachable. However, my guild site, and this site, remain up for some reason. Then my guild site is down. Then this one. I wait about 10-15 minutes, and it's up again. Currently, I can only access this site and my guild site.
Crappy ISP? Or something else?

Research online. There are a ton of possibilites, more then what most of us here would be able to try and find out for you.
Not trying to spam, but visit my website where I give out free tech support answers at www.geekerseeker.com, and send me an email with the form on the main page. When I reply back, I'll ask you more specific questions to help you figure out what is going on.
I have a feeling your needs go beyond the scope of this forum, since it isn't PW related.Do you need help learning about patching the game, installing it, changing antivirus/firewall settings, changing network settings, learn how to use a computer, keeping your PC maintained and more?

So... my internet goes down from time to time. [...] it works like this: Most every site known to man becomes unreachable. However, my guild site, and this site, remain up for some reason.
That to me, screams of crappy DNS updates. Easy way to find out if I'm right or not would be to try something like this:
When this thing happens and you find you can't access most popular sites go to Start/Run , type in cmd , you'll get a window pop up, in there type ping www.microsoft.com . If it says ping request can not find the host, then it's 10000% a DNS-resolving issue.
How can you fix it... urgh tough question, if it's cause of your PC (which I highly doubt because you say you can access certain sites - meaning IP addys work, domains don't), in the same window that you used to type the ping thing, first type ipconfig /flushdns then type ipconfig /registerdns .
WARNING: By using the /flushdns switch you might end up not being able to use your guild-site and this site either untill your internet starts working properly
But I think it's just your ISP's DNS acting up to be totally honest!
Oh and if you say just want to use google to look at stuff (using it's view cache option) and can't load it, type 74.125.39.99 in your address bar instead of google.com, and it should take you to the familiar search page!0 -
Great. I'll look at this next time it happens. As a Guild,

You can also go to Run > type in "cmd" > type in "ipconfig /release" (note the space between "ipconfig" and "/release") and wait for it to do its thing.
Then type /renew. It might help as well.
I agree with acrimony, it may be ISP and DNS issues.
What region of the world are you in? Who is your ISP?Do you need help learning about patching the game, installing it, changing antivirus/firewall settings, changing network settings, learn how to use a computer, keeping your PC maintained and more?

Er, western Canada. Telus as the ISP. I hear Shaw is quite a bit better. As a Guild,

Using a different DNS server might help, but if you don't have errors about resolving the host it's probably your ISP's fault.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]
Official PWI irc: (mirc command, opens in a new window and won't interfere with any servers you're already on) /server -m irc.deltaanime.net -j #pwint0 -
Might also wanna check your HOSTS file for hijacking. Maybe run a full virus/spyware scan too. Start with the basics. ^_^[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]0

Oddly, I was having problems like that last night. I couldn't connect to some servers randomly, including PWI. Probably some company jacking around with a major backbone or something.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]

Now that you mention it... I remember a couple of months ago there was a weird localized failure, where pretty much every server in San Jose was unavailable, except to the people actually in San Jose. That lasted a couple of hours or so.
Not exactly the same, but things like that are certainly possible.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]0 -
if you go to your network card preferences, there is a field where you can enter a DNS server, usually it's set to "automatic", but you can try to set it to openDNS. They are quite reliable, sometimes even faster than my ISP's DNS servers. Oh and they're freePW has been endless frustration for me #2
