Since it's going to be BIG and since LOTS of users are going to download it, would it be possible for you guys to make the client be available for download with a few mirror sites and a FEW DAYS before august 19th a.k.a the CB open day? so we can download at ease? and wont get pissed off when Download errors occur and so that you guys can work in peace towards the grand day?

if not the entire client, at the least the major parts. you can just use a patch download on the CB day to update the client... since patches are usually in Megabytes...

personally, it will take 3~5 days for me to download 2.2 GB because i have an ISP who i wish would die every single moment of my life (when I'm downloading from the internet) [oh yea they say i have T1 connection - -"]

just my 2 cents (i lost the other 3 T_T )

It would be really great if they could host a torrent, would save the company bandwidth and give us a failproof way to get the large file.

torrent <3 but after the first week of cb a lot of people will stop seeding. The usual 10 part file download fore fileplanet and gamershell(one of the best sites to direct download in my opinion) is a must ;D

PW-MY was an overnight download. Hopefully it'll be the same this time.

I like gamershell a lot too! (In my mind, I pronounce it "gamer shell". I can actually believe it says "gamer shell" too, except for their little mascot.)

Filefront seems to work well also.

I don't prefer torrents. I normally download at ~500-600 kb/s as soon as I start the download, and a torrent takes time to speed up. I can keep my computer running for an hour to keep the download going.

The lesson in this is that it's very wise to invest in buying a supercomputer.

I don't want to advertise programs but usually when it comes to torrents you have to heavily configure it for it to work at its full potential. I personally use flashget and it sets the settings automatically.

Usually with utorrent and azures I got 1/10 of the speed I get with flashget. You guys might want to try it. I can get 500kb per second on it easy considering whatever you download has more then a 100 seeders, and usually when its new content 100 seeders is taken for granted

dude flashget is horrible :( utorrent all the way.

Its all personal choice tho, and some ISP's DO block or throttle torrents, or plai outright block the tracker urls.

The thing about torrents is, the client needs proper configuration to function @ 100%
Most clients provide wizards to solve this but too many users decide to skip it and then wonder why the speed sucks.
So far, no matter where I was (home, uni) I was able to use the full speed my connection allowed. (on good seeded torrents). In some cases even bypassing throttling. I've had many people who wouldn't believe me proper configuration would increase performance and were amazed to see it work.
Info about how to configure any torrent client properly (+ bypassing ISP blocks in some cases) can be found here

I would prefer to have a torrent download for the client because:
    - it has an integrated filechecking feature, so you 100% get the data everyone has
    - it doesn't require you to download everything at once, you can pause and resume anytime.
    - downloads at max speed (if torrent properly seeded)
    - doesn't use up all your connection resources (if client properly configured)

Another thing: if you (GMs) planned to put the client on your webserver for direct download, you could also make the webserver seed for the torrent - this way the torrent will always be seeded at a decent speed.

If the GMs decide to host a direct download, please choose a host that doesn't blocks download managers/allows resume, it's really annoying having to download everything again because your internet connection decided to die @99% T_T

im pretty sure they will have a direct download on there website. Why wouldnt they DD is the safest and easiest way to d/l ur files. Plus u know ull get the full and correct files without worring bout anything being corrupt.

you're wrong. DD is the best way to end up having corrupted files, especially big ones like the client
when you DD you have to rely on your ISP's error correction which is often crappy.

torrent prevents corrupt files by checking every part it downloaded and automatically redownloads only this part if it was corrupt. the only case where you end up with corrupt files is if you use a crappy client or when the initial seed had corrupted files.

when DD-ing, even if the error correction fails, the data still lands on your HDD - have fun downloading the whole 2.5GB again.

    - DD is easiest
    - torrent is safest

so i'd say, host the client on a webserver (splitted in like, 5 parts) for those who can't/don't want to use torrent and a torrent for those who can and want to use it.

The thing about torrents is that it won't take up bandwidth from the company's servers since the users will be sharing the files as well. Think about it. Over 5000 beta keys are released over various sites. If over 5000 people have to download 2.5 GB at the same time the servers will be overloaded with several terabytes having to be transfered.

Filefront is a good idea but for me torrents have always been faster.

Fixed - imho the webserver is ideal for the role of an initial seed.

Filefront doesn't support resuming (at least it didn't work for me even once) and if you're unlucky then you have to download the whole thing again.

I think both methods are good.

And if your direct download fail at 99.99%, you can always finish it with BT :D

As long as I can download PW on FlashGet that will be great, cause if my internet disconnects while downloading on FlashGet, the PW Client can still be downloaded from where it disconnected instead of downloading all over again.
