Although I have had a PW/Arc account for quite some time, this will be my first time actually trying PWI. I actually know very little about the game! Any quick tips? Is spending some real life currency crucial to enjoying the game? What am I getting myself into here?

Few things need to be known before we can give you an answer or two.
What is your plan? Do you want to be between Top players or do you want just to play for fun?
Are you aiming for the Top gear or any gear that can help you survive in PVE would be enough for you?0 -
To make an incredibly long post short and to answer before the game's doom propheciors get a word in....
If you want to play casually and just have fun, it's a great game. Make some friends, kick back, and enjoy the content. There's a lot to do even if not everyone does it due to how the overall forum community is mostly concerned with endgame. Ingame, however, you'll find that far less people are quite as worried about endgame to the degree it shows up on the forums. Playing free is completely possible as well.
If you plan on any sort of major PvP, be prepared to either use your next of kin's soul as a down payment or spend a long time learning the ins and outs of the game and how to make a profit via working the market and the like. Endgame PvP is not friendly to those who don't have deep pockets (be it from merching, farming, or dropping a few thousand on the game) and you will be frustrated with it over time.
On that note, don't let yourself get too invested in perceptions about how things should be. The developers are in China and focus on the Chinese version of the game as their top priority. Many things that we have issue with, they see as either no problem or not worth bothering to change. They've also introduced plenty of changes that we had no need for or openly despised over here. It comes with the territory of the way this company is run, though, so don't let it get to you if you see patches that are only text changes for a few months (the only thing PWE is actually allowed to alter) before a patch bundle sent by china that has changes related to the gameplay or bug fixes and the like.(Insert fancy image here)0 -
Play until endgame and then use your experiences to decide. If your looking for a game anyways at least try that.0

I agree with the above statements. Its fun if you play casual. It's fine if you want to be the best of the best but realize that it'll require either a ton of time or cash or both. If you are casual realize that you'll get 1 shot more times than you can count(if you pvp or TW). You can join guilds that TW against people who aren't heavily geared. You can find your own niche and be fine.0

No, really. The cost of r9 PvP gear is almost enough money to put for a down payment on a house (which is terrifying, and disgusting).

The cost of rank9 gear is 2-3 bilion coins( depending on the gold price). just the basic R9.

So where are these houses that require 1K dollar as down payment? I would like to buy them up.

I'll never understand the "r9 is impossible to get" statements, as a free-to-play player i've fully farmed two full R9RR's and almost finished my third. It's all about not wasting money on useless **** (such as the endless amounts of overpriced fashion)", and standing around in arch doing nothing/talking. Go run a quick TT/WS, craft/sell g16, Save money, invest in upgrades, it all adds up fast.
here is one of those people that say they never put a dime in the game..lol dude come on man.But then again most of the super R9's out there run 3+++++ toons though.Sht isn't selling that great man lol..
Not everyone wastes their money on fashion & useless ****. I farmed my **** off with TT, Nirvana (when it was the thing to do), NW, and Lunar to gear my chars instead of wasting time standing around arch & doing useless ****.
Blasphemy!
Fashion dyed in the most appropriate colors is the most important thing, take that back!
I also farmed my **** off to get my gear, and after that I farmed my fashion sets, so there!DeffyNature0 -
Its a great game if you never go on the forums or news pages and learn to expect things. My advice to you: turn off world chat as much as you can. Never come hereto these poisonous forums again. Make friends and get absorbed in the actual world of the game and dont come back. You are free, little pwi-ling. Have a good life!

But if you want to be competitive... You have 2 options: to spend or to learn how the game works, investigate the market and catch and use promo PWE makes. Second requires time and some skills and knowledge, but not impossible. It's a MMO after all, you are not supposed to get endgame gear upon first log in.

Depends on when they joined. Don't forget, ADS used to sell for around 30 mil coins when gold was 100k -120k price. That mean each ADS farmed was equal to 300 dollars in game. Add in the fact most other mats would sell for 500k-a couple mil each, and they were set up very nicely if they did merchanting. Especially since merchanting would earn 30-70% on many items, and cube was worth 1-2 mil per run without even intending to beat it.
Basically anyone who kept playing from game start and merchanted early on would be swimming in coins with full gear and reawakened nuema portal set. It all depends how early they got on, and how well they saved.0
