Chat tutorial?

awrex1977awrex1977 Member Posts: 230 Arc User
I'm old and have never had a reason to really use the chat function in console gaming.

That said, it makes the Neverwinter experience much more enjoyable if you can actually communicate with group members.

Keyboard/typing is clunky at best.

Anybody have a link to a tutorial on how to get group chat to work or mind explaining?

Appreciate it.

LB + down on the digitail to start
    X to bring up keyboard
    A to send
    RB or LB to channels
    Y for emotes
Click on Right Thumb stick to enlarge the chat window
RT or LT to switch from default, social and Log

This seems like something they should have implemented. It is pretty confusing to use at first. It's caused the game to be completely silent. Nobody talks.. ever. I see people emoting now and then, heh.

metheantihero, you should definitely post that video here.

Once you get to the chat insert mode, if you install the Xbox Glass app on your smart phone, if you have one, you can use your phone to type and send the chat message.

More interested in actual voice chat, is there a way to turn it on?

I know Xbox One party feature works (but don't know he to add somebody not on friends list)

I see mic icons next to group member names, but have no idea if I'm doing something to not make it work

Is there a setting or tutorial on getting that to work?

    And thanks for the replies

As long as your mike is transmitting they can hear you, unless they are in Xbox party chat. No need to make any chamges

Not everyone wants to use a mic; I have kids and a husband in the background and I have no desire to be in chat with other folks due to usually cursing from them or the general desire to not hear a 12 year old on the other yelling and whining because something didn't go his way in the game.

With that said, the chat system in NW right now is difficult. It takes forever to be able to 'type' out something on the in-game keyboard if you need to say something lengthy. I also believe chat is restricted until either level 10 or 15 (I can't remember which it is but it was restricted in Beta).

I read somewhere about possibly being able to use a real keyboard plugged into the xbox but I can't find the information on that now :(

Has anyone used the attachments for the X1 to use a keyboard and mouse instead of a controller? If so, are they any good?

I don't know about the mouse, but a USB keyboard does work sort of. You have to do LB+down, then press x and then you can type on the keyboard, press enter, then a to send.

Now that I've typed it out, that does seem like a lot.

I haven't come across any whining or yelling 12 year olds in this game. In fact, I haven't come across them in pretty much any game I've played on the Xbox One. Most of those annoying "kids" that were on the Xbox 360 left and went to PS4. The only people I come across using the mics in Neverwinter are adults and pretty level headed people. Either that or they don't speak english. Sometimes you'll get an annoying kinect mic, which makes me wonder why there isn't a mute option on the party members when you highlight them.

As far as the keyboard goes, you can pretty much plug any keyboard into the X1's USB ports and it should work. Also there is this adapter for your controller which might not be a bad investment if the X1 continues to get more MMO type games.

I plugged in a wireless usb keyboard and it works fine.
I just hit ENTER and type it what I want to say. I may have to use the RB or LB to change channels. Once I type what I want to say, I hit ENTER again. To exit the chat, I just hit the B button on the controller.

The wireless keyboard make it easy to use on the console if your not at a desk and on the couch or in a recliner. The keyboard option for xbone came out in there February update.
