Frankly, I think you have to be a bit daft to fall for something like that.
But if anyone is worried, or gullible, simply PM me your login name, password, credit card details, mother's maiden name and any other security "memorables" and I'll personally ensure that your account and wallet are safe from those bad guys.... ;p

Seriously. Why would anyone PM you with an offer for free epic stuff. Any offer for in-game stuff that doesn't come from Cryptic or PWE is a scam by it's very nature.

Unfortunately things have always been this way, there will always be scammers and while it really sucks for those who lose out, it really is their own fault for thinking that someone is going to give them something for free.. especially in a game that is all about the money. Not condoning the actions of scammers by any means, but its not their fault, its the fault of the person who was silly enough to think free exists.

In the year 2011, the estimated figure for spam messages is around seven trillion.
The chance for anyone to answer one of those messages is pretty high I guess.

This isn't victim blaming , I hate scammers and account thieves and their like but I can't even imagine how naive somebody would have to be to fall for something like this .

Whatever the reason why they fell for it, they are still victims. And you are putting the blame on them. What is this if not victim blaming ? Shame on you.

And to think, I almost got into that creepy van with "Free candy" spray painted on the side. After this post, I know to only go for the cheap candy from here on out:p
Instead of coming to the forums to laugh, have you done anything "in game" to warn people? You know... take a proactive approach to this new scam going on?
I did.

For a hamburger today, I can send you the information next tuesday...
Excellent. I've sent the hamburger by Western Union transfer. I look forward to receiving the account details and also the multi-million dollar inheritance from my newly-discovered Nigerian uncle. Seems it's my lucky day. Now, if only I could find some way to get hold of a university degree, a driving licence and guaranteed larger, erm, "implement" by the end of the week....
Maybe if criminals took responsibility for their actions instead of blaming the victims, we would have less crimes.
Criminals do actually, it's called jail.
Also, riddle me this, for these people to be victims of this scam, did they actively do anything that made them vulnerable/a victim? If they did not do said actions, would they still be victims?
Why yes, they went to a website given to them be a complete stranger claiming to give them "free" items. It is partially their fault whether you want to call it "victim blaming" or not.

Well I hate to say it because like I already said I hate scammers and rip off merchants as much as any legit player but if people are really falling for this nonsense then maybe they deserve to be blamed , like seriously let's look at this for a second -
1 - Following a link to a site that is clearly not official
2 - Giving their username to the site when asked , fair enough you could argue that the site might ask for this to mail the ''free prizes'' to the person but still it would make most people wary .
3 - Giving them your account password , this is the ultimate one , lets get real here ,if somebody is idiotic enough to do this then I'm sorry , maybe they deserve to learn a nasty life lesson and be blamed , wrapping them up in cotton wool and mollycoddling them and blaming everybody else apart from the person themselves will not do them any favours in the real world where falling for this kind of stuff could be a lot more destructive..
One could also stay at home to reduce the chance of being mugged/HAMSTER too.
The person said that it is NOT the scammers fault which is complete bs. They know what they were doing. It's not a case of whether it's preventable, the person put 100% blame on the victim.
Huh...I re-read that closely and you're right. It's both the fault of both parties, but to suggest it's not the scammers fault and blame the victim 100% is in fact moronic.

LOL! That is too funny! And I really did laugh out loud!

I got snagged by something like that in WoW once but it was an offer to get in on a beta or something, went to the site and it looked just like the Bnet site but I missed a small difference in the url. And of course at this time my NOD32 was HAMSTER up and wasnt working. I chickened out at the last moment but had already entered my pass/login. loaded a keylogger and hacked my wow account. Some russian outfit, tried to send money grams to russia. Fortunately moneygram caught it and I saw my acct was hacked almost immediately. Totally my fault but WoW gave all my stuff back in a day. Always check with the company/community first or better yet skip it

The fact that I get and laughed at both these references has made me feel ancient.
