If someone could clear this up for me, I just don't get all the confusion or gripes about GS. If you get better gear you do more damage, take less damage and basically kick more butt. So GS is just a benchmark on how advanced your toon is so someone who just got to 60 and has lower quality gear is not going to as well as someone with epic or legendary gear which is why we try to get that stuff. So we can group with others to do more difficult runs and get even better stuff. So what is all the griping about GS? If your going into battle and 5 guys have machine guns you really don't want to take the guy with a pistol right? And if I'm the guy with the pistol I understand that I would be a weakness in their team. Maybe it's a PVP thing I don't do much of that. But it always sounds like someone crying cuz the big dogs won't let the puppies play with them, so puppies get better gear til your a big dog and then you CAN play with the big dogs (I'm not a big dog yet). Thats what they did right?
So now I hear that gear score is going away, just what I heard. But won't it get replaced with some other rating system that will just be GS called something else?
this is the reason the community in this game is so disgusting...
that you don't understand what's wrong with everything you've just said, haha
"so puppies get better gear til your a big dog and then you can play with the big dogs"
jesus man lol
gs != skill
i'd rather have people that can actually aim and shoot a pistol, than people who bought machine guns but have absolutely no idea how even arm or use them
you're a big dog going against puppies.....there is no "big dog" content in this game, if there was, then you would see higher GS requirements
i don't think you've played this game for long to understand what exactly is wrong with your stance....maybe in time...

...but they do! And even call him "Lieutenant"!!!
OK, to your question: Yes, you understood that correctly. BUT...
...now the score won't be upped by e.g. campaign boons - which do add to the current GS if they're elevating certain stats. Whether this is a plus or a minus for the new systeem I dare not judge.
...furthermore, some people have - in their confusion about and desperation to up their GS - worn Items that buff completely irrelevant stats, but massively. And hence had a high GS but still couldn't run along. Whether this will be amended by the new system I frankly doubt...
So, basically, you're right: It'll be relabeled, remixed, but not completely dropped.

i want to emphasize that he's only right about that, that gs is being changed to item levels
The puppies can't get better if the big dogs won't help them gear and learn. Its that simple elitism that almost caused me to quit this game when I was new and a fresh 60 on my first character. Do you remember how hard it was when you first hit 60 on your first character? Maybe not because maybe you've been here since beta back when everyone was a new 60. Its not easy for new players to come into the game now. If you want your game to survive you have to be friendly to the new players and help them. It makes it more fun for all. Stop being elitist and expecting everyone to run 18K GS for a T2 epic dungeon. Its not needed.

I agree on the part that the game needs to keep the new players to stay afloat but disagree that new players will stay just because gs is removed. The "elitism" is still there. New players are still the new players, the underdogs. The game should give them the opportunities to catch up instead of just putting a mask on their equipment and tell them "hey, you don't see their gs now. They are not more elite than you" and hope the newbies will buy it.

I never meant or implied that removing GS is going to fix anything. In fact I know it won't. What I was trying to get at is that people need to stop being elitist. ^_^

If the society allows one to be an elitist, don't blame the elitist, blame the society.
Elitism happens in both real and virtual worlds. Can you stop billionaires from not grouping with paupers? It is not up to the paupers to complain about not being able to join the billionaires' inner circles. Their complaints should be on the ones who don't give them equal opportunities to become billionaires themselves.

The thing that always gets me is that some long time elite players will complain that new players get 'easy gear' or that things are so easy they ought to get there gear mailed to them, when the reality is that the elites reluctance to help anyone get geared up and into end game content is what causes the stagnation of said end game content, or cause huge changes to gearing up and leveling that some players wont like.
It may end up that way, honestly, perhaps the one way to fix this problem is a fresh set of 'end game' gear in the mail. Nothing fancy, but enough to get a foot in the door and keep the content alive.
The coming changes of new artifacts levels, enchantment levels cause me to wonder if I will *ever* be able to catch up on gear score. But even though they are removing the 'gear score' surely there will be another way to identify the 'elite' - perhaps it will be mythical vorpals ...
But the reality is, the climb to a higher power level at end-game is so long and arduous that I'm not finding it fun. Sure I can wait the months and set-up toons to make ADs and can't 'have everything at once', but in earlier mods people could trade items which are now bind-on-pickup e.g. coalescent wards (100k AD to 400+AD now).
Everything is getting more expensive. There is an inflation of AD, refining targets, 'gear score' or whatever they call it and it will only seem to get worse with the coming mod.

I got ALL my gear without the big dogs help so why can't you?
If people actually used GS in a reasonable manner - that is, as a *rough* estimation of a character's abilities and strength - then it woudl be fine. But people don't. They abuse the number in order to exclude people who don't deserve exclusion. For example, those who think Tiamat should be restricted only to those 15k and above are ignoring the worthwhile contributions from buff/debuff characters with lower GS whose job it is NOT to have a huge GS, but to amplify everyone else's DPS with their abilities. I brought my 14k Righteous DO debuff DC into Tiamat many times and he did fine, no substantive issues. And because people abuse GS, it creates a strong incentive for players to pad GS to their own detriment, and to the detriment of the team such as breaking 4pc set bonuses, using stat-boosting companions instead of more worthwhile ones, and basically inflating their character with useless stats just so they can have a high GS and be accepted into these parties who use GS as a harsh cutoff number.
And this does not even get into all of the flaws in the GS calculation concerning what it includes that it shouldn't, and what it excludes that it shouldn't.
To this day I still see CWs running around with 2/2 set pieces, or wearing the full Draconic Templar set (which has a useless set bonus), because "they give the most stats" when they ought to be using a set that gives an actual USEFUL bonus, like High Vizier or Shadow Weaver, or even Draconic for heaven's sake.

Like I said, repeat again, two sides to the coin, always. Unlike pups, humans have this thing called 'free will', so to become better in skill, and to properly motivate oneself to the gear grind, one first needs to admit the cold, hard fact that one sucks -- and BAD.
Most low-level PvP players can't even go past this first step, in which case they usually turn bitter and quit PvP forever. Those who realize they suck, start to listen to other, better players and what they have to say. Then at this point, they really start to adapt to the learning curve. Those who want to be the "nobody tells me what to do " attitude can never learn.
Imo it's because some have the fast food mentality of gaming. They wanna doPK in 10 mins rather then grind the dungeon out the way it was intended. If you have a good build and know how to play your class you don't need much more then 13k. It's always annoying hearing crying for Tiamat to have a 15k gs cap, I've had a 11k cw in Tiamat and I had no issues came in 10th on the leaderboard, but that's cw for ya :P
Oh nonsense. People are responsible for their own actions regardless of the approval or lack thereof from "society".
Elitists have the rights not to group with non-elitists if it is not against the rule of the game. Billionaires have the rights not to admit paupers into their billionaire clubs if it is not against the law.
Either the have-nots just live with those kind of treatments or cry for changes to the rule makers. The key is if the elitists and billionaires don't break any game rule and law of the society, they are entitled to their actions even if the paupers don't like it.
