I'm pretty new here. My first character was the same on this game as every other MMO, a Hunter type class. However, I have the most fun with these types of games healing or tanking. So my next class will be a healer or tank. Therefore, I have a couple of questions.
1) What seems to be needed more now and what is likely to be needed more in mod 6, healers or tanks? (end-game type stuff)
2) Does either class seem to be more difficult to spec/gear/play?
1) Now? Neither. The fastest and smoothest runs are almost always those where the party is just 5 DPS classes with a high amount of lifesteal. In mod 6? Have to wait and see, but the devs seem to be interested in making healers and tanks actually important for a change which would be nice. I also have a lot of fun with those classes. I'd guess healing won't change so much, only become actually nessesary. Whereas people are going to actually be tanking for like the first time ever now so that will probably be more needed.
2) I'd say tanking here is harder than healing. GF have a tough time holding aggro even when spec'd and feated for damage because DPS classes are just so much more powerful than the tank it's not even close. You have some abilities to force mobs to focus on you so timing them and targeting them properly is what makes it work. But like I said, it doesn't even really need to work. Lifesteal is king right now. Moving forward, I hope this changes. In my experience healing has mostly just been spamming the same power over and over again unless things start looking hairy in which case you add one or two other powers into the mix. DCs tend to pull a lot of aggro, but then again they're pretty good at surviving. My main is DC. Again, lifesteal. Healing isn't super important right now. DCs have some great control and buff/debuff powers to use to make things run more smoothly. My GF focuses more on buff-debuff in a support role too.
I really don't like how ridiculous lifesteal is right now, and while the coming changes may be scary at first, I really hope they find a nice balance where these two roles will actually be important again.
Then again, I was talking about tanking as a GF. I think the best tanks I've seen have usually been GWF though. Sometimes combat hunters do it really well too. But really, with enough lifesteal, anyone can do it.
Truth is, no-one yet knows how the classes will pan out in mod 6 so it's best to just wait and see. If you are impatient get yourself onto the preview server (although the new Paladin is not yet available there).
So do you think it would be worth rolling a tank or healer now? I ask because I really haven't had the impression that these roles aren't very important either.

Right now "healers" are the best PvE DPS'ers in the game depending on your build. Go Devoted Cleric...

There is a lot of exaggerating going on here. 5 DPS classes are great until you do Shores or Lostmauth. Then they're going to have a hard time without a GF or at least a DC. I presume that Mod 6 will continue going in this direction.
My GF is still below level 30 because he does so little damage that I find it to be a chore to level him. My DCs, on the other hand, are very fun to play and their buffs and debuffs make them a great addition to any group.....they can even heal too if it's needed for some reason. But mostly they prevent the need for healing.

I enjoy both my GF and DC. A few days ago my tank and another guy were the last two standing in Valindra's Tower, with me desperately kiting around 20 angry mobs or so while he finished the boss. He downed the boss just as the mobs were about to kill me, and made all those undead critters crumble to dust. A rather glorious battle.
Playing a DC is also fun, you're constantly on the move, spamming AoEs, dodging enemies and their AoEs while still having to keep an eye on your team's health.
As of Mod 5 a high-end group (or anything near) won't need a tank or a healer. It's all about buff/debuff. Healers and tanks are mostly needed for lower geared groups to save the run. Next mod I assume this is going to change bigtime. With no lifesteal healers and tanks will be back in demand and have their roles significantly increased, as it should have been. Support deserve some love!

Ive seen alot of responses to this and none of them had "You" in mind. All though most of these comments before mine are helpfull. Please keep in mind.A Tanker build in this new form of neverwinter does mostly run around in circles and agro monsters with a prayer that the claric knows what he is doing as he is very squishy for a "tanker" class" And for a claric, they are very limited on there healing spells. And you will not have the full effect of the healing spells till later on in the lvling. I read about dps and HAMSTER, Dps Stands for Damage per a second. Though most when talking about damage. DPS to them means damage. Keep this in mind. When playing both, you will have alittle stress following you because people will yell at you for not damaging the monster. Id ignore them. And also keep in mind. This game is nothing like DND as it advertizes.
Honestly, the first charecter, Id be a wizard or warlock. Even though them classes are very over played and over powerd, These classes will help you farm for better items and help you learn the game with less frusteration on your first round to lvl. Me as well , first charecters are allways archers. But in this game the archers are nerfed so bad, We have no purpose in the community. We get booted out of dungeon parties and see ourselfs getting nerfed more and more for each update to satisfy someones pvp environment. the archer build cant even be used for "pulling"as the agro spells for the tankers rarely work and the healing spells sometimes fail.
So, this brings up. What do "you" want to play? thats easy.
" Tanker " run around like a little girl in circles and attempt to agro with patience that your stuff dont work or
"Healer " being yelled at for not dpsing monsters, pray that you can heal parties and get blaimed when they go wrong.
wiz/warlock" having fun with challengins the dps marks in dungeons and getting your Power up to 10,ooo <--so possible
other classes just sit back and watch them get nerfed on each update.lol...
And to be honest. Any class works for what we all need. What we need is people who accually stop and think that this new neverwinter world you cant just hack and slash. THere are stragities that you have to use in each dungeon. Like you cant do spellplague with out a wizard, (cant do any dungoen without a wizard, as this new neverwinter is built around them )cant do Castle Never with anyone below 15k gear score. And in wells, taimat, you keep leaving dungeons when you see low gear scores, not worth the time to attempt. You have 4 mins to join and leave to fight Taimat. And I wouldnt go there lower then 15k, yet you will see 10-12ks LOL...
Then again, I was talking about tanking as a GF. I think the best tanks I've seen have usually been GWF though. Sometimes combat hunters do it really well too. But really, with enough lifesteal, anyone can do it.
Tanking is not just staying alive, tanking is making everything attack you while staying alive.
GWF can't hold aggro from any class. It's not a tank.
I don't know why nobody seems to have mentioned it yet, but in Mod 6 they are releasing the Paladin Class which is a Heal-Tank. So you can Heal AND Tank with one Character. No need to choose between them at all.

It looks like a Paly will be able to hear or tank.
I'm a cleric because I love to heal, but since healing is so... not needed right now in well geared groups, I have become a dps cleric. I actually really like it. If they added dual spec I'd add a healing spec in too (where you can actively switch between two specs that you set up outside of combat, say at a campfire or altar.), but I like being able to solo and kill stuff fast. I can even solo 2 to 3 man heroic encounters now as a dps.
My point is that I love supporting and healing, but right now the game doesn't need it, and runs better with 5 dps.

yeah... No use for DPS Clarics, I spit on the idea. Do you know what a dps claric is ? A Paladin !!! LOL.. yes, it is a heal class fighter, But ATM, our GFS cant even tank. So i doubt this dream healing fighter will as well. As paladins heals are not as strong as the clarics heals. They are not as wide range. The paladins have more buffs then heals. and more regenerative then persistant. I doubt they would put one class out there to replace 2 classes guys. Dont get to carried away here.. We will still need our healing clarics and our Guardian fighters for what ever there worth. Though. I do see PVP turning into Paladins and dps clarics sided when they come out.

You got that right! Things might change quite a bit in Mod 6, so just try a couple different characters for now and have fun!
