How to boost standalone companion damage? Does Armor pen even work on him?

Is it worth to put armor pen on standalone pet like a neverwinter archer?
Or just put power to boost dmg?

I guess recovery works on him doesn't it?

Pets are unfortunately almost totally broken. Their attacks are few and ineffective. The equipment and enchants on them do not affect their stats (unless an augment pet, which affects you). About the only thing they are useful for is to agro a couple of enemies to keep the heat off of you until they get downed, or for the healing pets, to make you last a bit longer without needing to use a healing potion.

Armor Pen definitely does not work. Power works (increases damage+healing) and Hit Points help. Recovery doesn't seem to do anything either, or if it not noticeable.

Their damage will never be good no matter what you do. That's why many people say to get an augment or don't even bother summoning one.

Regen works (on the faun at any rate) as well as defense (at least on the mimic).

Ive seen so many topics like this. Where people are convinced that some stats are useless and others work just fine. That Im starting to believe that its on a companion by companion basis. I have an untested hunch that a companion can only really use stats from items, if it already has that stat as part of its skills. With the exception of possibly power and HP.

This would mean that pets like the mimic will get more from defense then the Neverwinter Archer. Where as the Archer would get more function from AP, as it has it as a starting stat, then the Mimic.

It's pretty easy to test, simply remove the gear from the pet and watch it's stats not be affected at all.

They should stop making new ones and just fix everything that's wrong with them.

You can't fix an inherently bad ai. I guess they could replace it but that would drastically require more system resources in the client.

Could at least make all the stats work like lifesteal does.

Basically augments, healers, and utility companions are useful.

    Strikers are almost totally useless.

Strikers need to attack faster, deal more damage, and should attempt to flank the enemy.

That's one thing I like about the Blink Dog: it does teleport behind its target, giving you combat advantage.

*If* there is any 'non-function' with companion stats it can only be companion-by-companion (an issue specific to that companion). I decked my Fawn up: ranked up to Epic, rank 9 runestones, and all epic Companion Gear (Rings and Necklace of the Ghost) and I can assure you: it's stats are "affected".

Based on those items here are my Fawn's stats:

    Health: 23,531
    Regeneration: 637
    Deflect: 138
    Defense: 637
    Recovery: 414
Armor Penetration, Critical Strike, Power, and Life Steal are all zero (unnecessary for this type of companion.)

So everything I want to happen with this one does happen. Comments like the one by d4rthd00fus:

    ...are nonsensical at best.

If you have doubts about your chosen companion it's best to test for yourself rather than rely on misinformation from the community.

Since the devs won't give us anything to work with, I suppose you're right. Based on that: Power (as well as regen) does affect the healing abilities of the faun ;)

Agreed - and I'm now in the process of finding some nice enchantments for the rings and necklace to add some good power. Sometimes my blankest statements can be a little more inclusive than they should be. :)

Before m2 I had a cold iron warrior which I truly adored and got everything to boost his damage. Best enchantments I could get, x3 greater indomitables.... I just refused the idea of "augmentation" pet, I just didn't want one but some companion/helper.
Then, when they released companion active bonuses I even got him boar, jagged knife, ghost and shepherd dog and upgraded them to purple. And still, even maxed, his damage output was so inferior that I don't even...I think that was a moment when I became a min maxer ._.
Companions truly could use some love in this game :(
