Hey guys,
I just took a look at Neverwinter and I do like it so far. The main problem I encountered was the ingame chat - it is so flooded with goldsellers I couldn't handle it. So after reporting some of them for spamming I turned the trade- and lfg-channel off, but I don't think this can be the solution, can it?
My question is this: is this a problem in the starting areas and does it get better as I progress? Or will I have to live with it? What about other bots? Are there many of them? :-/
I read some threads about these issues, but as a **** I have some problems to see how far all of this could affect me personally, plus since it is an MMO things can change really quick and I don't know how the situation is right now by reading posts from 2013.
Regards
(Sorry if I made some mistakes, I'm German. Feel free to correct me. ^^)

There's a couple of tabs above the chat box. That's self explanatory. Clicking on the settings gear will open up the chat tab settings, which is a different menu from the basic esc-settings-chat menu. Edit these however you want.
My recommendations: Keep zone, trade, & lfg on a tab (like social) separate from any others. Set your default to custom channels (like legit, guild, etc), have a channel specifically for dungeons (party, loot rolls, etc.), and a quiet one (nothing but PM's) to disappear into when the other channels turn angry or disruptive.
Zone/trade/lfg is where you will encounter the most gold sellers, but they may still send PM's that are very annoying. Someone has mentioned that you can change your settings to only receive PM's from people on your friends list, but I don't know how to do that. Does anyone else? That would be a very helpful answer here.
Try to avoid zone. Nothing but angry people there.

The knowledgebase is pretty decent. If you are at the point where you want to start min-maxing gear/stats for high end PVP/PVE, I'd go into the top PVP guilds as majority of the population of that channel do not go into that detail. Otherwise, everything you will need to know will be answered there by a friendly player.
Some of the 'middle-management' leadership there is questionable and unpleasant, but you won't have to deal with them anyways most of the time.
the "top PVP guilds" are full of cheaters and scumbags. avoid them like the plague.
find a decent guild with decent people and have fun.
That is the case in any game. Back when PVE in this game was challenging, you'd find these same characters in high end PVE guilds (in fact, most of the PVP community today came from PVE).
That is an unfortunate part of most high end gaming communities wherein the devs have done a poor job of control, I will agree. Nonetheless, *if* you want the highest form of competition and actual challenge, that is the burden you must carry in this game and most other games.
Here is a quick summary:
Pros:
Easy and fun, the game keeps you feeling powerful through progression.
Free to Play, you will never have to pay to play or get anything in game, even from the cash shop if YOU DON't WANT TO.
Roughly based on DnD 4E.
Dynamic young developer studio that generates lots of New content.
Cons:
Toxic Community of Players, especially PVP
Riddle with Gold Spammer/Bots
Greedy Publisher
Bugs and exploits resolution are handle in a less then ideal fashion.
Developer communication is skettish at best.
Mediocre Customer Support.
