So since the last patch I've had a go at this skirmish a couple of times, and he's started repeatedly one shot killing people, myself included. It happened a couple of times before the last patch but since then it's happening A LOT more often. The first group I noticed it with, I just thought, "Maybe there's something off with us in the squad." Shrugged it off as a loss and moved on... Then it happened again. Average squad, we handled ourselves really well and had a cleric for protection/heals etc, until the final boss. Then I was lucky enough to get into a group of really well geared and skilled players, cut through the instance like a hot knife through butter...
Then the boss came up... Everyone was dropping like flies. I'm not normally one to rant on the forums about a challenging instance, but when the Boss can take out the squishier people in squads with one shot from full health (Repeatedly) That seems a little much... I will say this though, it does make the thought of getting a GF with Knights valor extremely appealing, but I digress.
Anyone else care to share their thoughts and/or experience on this?
you can learn to dodge that attack, ive been hit for 70k+ at 40% DR so its not just the squishies that get oneshot
learn attacks patterns and you shouldnt die unless you are a GWF, or, maybe, SW(havent done it as SW), as GWF u need unstoppable + sprint to be somewhat safe, though i wouldnt be surprised that GWF get oneshot even through that

Yeah. Learn his tells, then dodge when he throws a fist full of fire embers at you. It's been a "pretty much a one-shot" ability since the dungeon went live.
Yeah there was a 37k GWF there in that good squad, he got smacked around like a rag doll... It's not so much the Red circle AoE's either, I can dodge those just fine, I know his tells for his fire breath, or the fist full of fire... it's that random fire burst he does every so often like after his fire breath attack that gets me, just finish dodging one Red AoE only to take a dirt nap by an explosion from his *** with no warning
Oh, it gets better!
I have a surprisingly durable 'Lock (as in, I often get the Immovable Object award, or at least second place in Normal, even if we have a GF). He isn't the most indestructible 'Lock around, but he's starting to go in that direction.
Well, yesterday I was in Epic SoT and I managed to survive the One Hit Wonder (I was Sprinting at the time) and the B(#@*&d just followed me. Throwing all of his best attacks right on top of me until I finally ran out of Stamina and couldn't get out of the mass of overlapping Persistent Flame Circles that had combined to form a Lake of Fire around me. As these were all the Persistant types, no one could get to me for a revive, either.

Here's the thing:
I know his Tells.
I can recognise them.
But (and I think Lag may to blame here, more than anything) he has not been GIVING his Tells. You just DIE. That's it. No warning, no Tells, heck, much of the time you're just some random place on the Battlefield and you just keel over with no attack animation of any kind, even if he is facing the opposite direction and in the middle of his Fire-Breath attack.

I actually have to agree with this in some way, there's literally no warning or tell before I just keel over and die...
for my personal taste, tactics 4-1 works quite nicely.
after killing annoying drakes asap, 4 of us stand in melee surrounding Garakas and one (dc or cw) ranged. in that case Garakas will always throw his fireball first and only then makes his deadly 50-70k one-shotter. if you don't change position, the whole fight goes smoothly: attacks are always in the same time and you have enough room to prepare yourself for a dodge/sprint in the right period.
but ofc lag kills you even faster than Garakas sometimes
you have right, that fight is the classic and maybe the only example of fight in this game where all team members have to know ( and actually really trying to do it ) what to do:
1) you have to avoid to keep distances, so best way to kill dragons at the start is AOE on the boss.
2) avoid to dodge the big flames, dodge only the throwing part after that.
3) if you are having problem start to move around him, with enough movement speed you dont have to dodge.
4) if you really hate gf with knight valor, bring 2 HRs with you. they can give you a free dodge that if well timed can save the whole party multiple times.
i m personally starting to leave the party after 3 fails because if it's not their cap of tea it's not my fault. All those "i do the dps guy i have 20k hp too OP " needs some serious work around their build.

20k hp is not for ppl who cant play their classes, but once you learn it you can live with it, even as the worst class in game atm - GWF, also having 20k hp gives u much more uptime on unstoppable, soulforged op
its not like theres a difference between having 20k hp or 40k hp if u get hit for 70k
If everyone fights at melee range, he will throw fire twice, which can easily wipe inexperienced pugs Rotation: Fire breath, instant throw fire, slightly delayed throw fire
If you nominate a range class to kite at range, he will instead throw a fireball which can easily be avoided. Rotation: Fire breath, instant throw fire, throw fireball
If you end up having to solo the boss, use the first melee strategy regardless of your class and save your dodge for the instant throw fire. You can side step the fire breath and simply circle around the boss at melee range for the delayed throw fire.
Also a good idea: take a DC! Between a triple shot of Divine Glow and Astral Shield, he becomes a lot more survivable. You still don't want to stand in the red, but the 'one-shot' hits become a 'that was close' moments.
When I end up as the only player alive (which happens more often than I like) on my CW I fight him at range. He always follows the same pattern. Throw daggers (or whatever they are), Flame Breath, Flame Circle.
I dodge to the left or right the instant he begins his wind up for the dagger throw. Hit him a few times until the big red cone appears, *walk* out of that attack, hit him some more. Start moving to the left or right again, that should allow you to easily walk out of the red circle, but if for some reason you don't think you have the time you can dodge. Hit him some more. Then the pattern repeats.
He will only have 2 big flaming circles active at once, as soon as he casts his 3rd the oldest of the previous circles will begin to fade away, so you will always have room to maneuver. But you do have to know where you are going and if your chosen path is safe. Try to walk/run as much as possible and save your dodges for when you really need them.
All that said, it is tougher when you have other people fighting him. If you have more than 1 person fighting him and the person holding aggro dies (even if they immediately soulforge) he can switch aggro to you when you least expect it and that can cause instant death. It can also happen if the person holding aggro moves in an unexpected direction and puts you in the line of fire when you are not ready for it. Unfortunately it can be very difficult to coordinate with random pugs, not much you can do about it.
This boss has always had the obnoxious one-shot ability. If you haven't suffered through a party where people are dropping like flies its probably because you been fortunate to frequently land in parties with a GF or with high DPS characters who knew how to dodge his attacks. You can do multi-runs with a GF and feel like you have the skirmish down no problem. Then you try runs without one and get slapped around and wonder what hit you.
The attack that you must watch out for is him throwing knives. There's no red area. The only warning you have is that he will tuck his left hand to his right side and crouch a little. Then you have a split second to dodge or you die. I prefer to dodge toward him. That way I'm not rotating him and I won't accidentally dodge into a circle of equally lethal fire on the ground.

The easiest way to defeat him is to have a Guardian fighter in the group. My Guardian has tanked the boss many times by herself. I keep his attention on me while the party hits with combat advantage. IMO the easiest way.
Yeah learning his tells is pretty much the best way to fight him. He does the same stuff 99% of the time but occasionally there is nothing and you just drop dead lol, it happens rarely, probably due to lag. I have soloed this boss but then one time i died 3 times in a row with no warning at all, 2 of the deaths was even though block, just some annoying bug
Yeah, thanks to an earlier post in this thread I started watching him a bit more closely, instead of where the red circles were and spotted the Knife throw/instant flame attack... so now I just try and stay behind him as much as possible or just on a side where the other players aren't. The past few runs have been going a lot better since, guess I just need to really learn the attack patterns next. Also noticed that he gets that double Enraged buff after the two drakes he's with die... I wonder if it's possible for a GF to agro those and just keep kiting them, effectively dropping the bosses overall attack power... but they seem to jump around the place a bit too much for that.
This boss is easy once u master the pattern he is throwing. Here is some tips,
1) U just need to dodge his attack left then right if u hold the aggro to keep him facing one direction. But dont spin around the boss if ur party member is still alive. You only spin him if all your party member is dead and you are doing him solo.
2) if all player is at melee, he will throw fire breath ( red cone on the ground ) next he will do 2 time fire dagger thing ( the one with no warning). Dodging the 1st is easy as he will usually throw at once after the fire breath. The 2nd will be much complex as he pause for a while before he throw another. So timing is important here. After twice throwing dagger, he will cycle back to fire breath. Rinse and repeat.
3) if one or more player going range, he will toss a fireball ( the red circle) and throwing dagger immediate after. Next he will do fire breath. Thats the common cycle he will be doing but on occasion the pattern will change to fireball > firebreath > throwing dagger. So watch out.
4) Next tip is if there is melee member hitting the boss, pls dun stay at mid range. It will cause red circle forming too near the boss and giving the melee class a hard time to dodge and move around the boss. This tips goes to most DC player that like to stand in the astral shield circle. Best way is to stand at melee range behind the boss or dun stand in the astral shield at all.
5) And the most important thing is 1 member go for the boss to distract him into facing the wall and the rest of the 4 member go for drake at the start of the fight. Already tested with a GF distracting the drake while the rest dps the boss and it end up a fail try. The drake will kill the GF before the team could dps down the boss. After the GF died, the drake will overwhelm the whole party.
It usually goes well if all the above tips we done properly.
I can just about tank him on my GWF and he has always done high amount of damage with his breath and knife attacks. Like others said the only way I can survive his knife attack with no DC is either with Unstoppable up, so have to use some skill to time it, or a lucky deflect or learning to dodge it (which is easier said than done without endangering others in the party).
With a good DC however it is a fair bit safer, what with their healing combined with damage reduction spells and buffs I can survive his knife attack more often without having to use Unstoppable.

I wouldn't advise someone trying to *kite* that boss as it will likely result in knife attacks being aimed at other party members as the kiter runs around the room. It will also mean a lot more fire pits being thrown around forcing others in the party to constantly keep moving and dodging to stay alive. Better just to "tank" it faced away from others and do your best to time things like Unstoppable and dodge if no healer with you.
Huh i have often had GWF's kite the boss with great succes in that skirmish??
it is possible but much harder for gwf due to lack of immunity frames, DR from unstoppable is trash, it takes unstoppable + sprint to survive a hit and even then you can get 1shot

Unstoppable DR is only trash if you are trying to tank him as a DPS build, i.e. not focusing on defence and aren't a Sentinel. However I understand most of the time when you get a GWF in the group this won't be the case, then I would suggest you dodge as much as possible. Personally as my GWF is built to tank I can survive his knife attack most times without much danger when Unstoppable.
Garakas enters "pissed-off mode" when his drakes are killed.
Oooh?! This I didnt know and makes it an interesting fight mechanic Certainly would be more "adventurous" though as those drakes will jump around on to other party members a lot, which will be very bad if they are stacked behind the boss...
