My main character is a Shadovar sorcerer named Aron Times. Okay, he's really a CW/MoF in game, but this character has always been a sorcerer since I started playing him in a Neverwinter Nights 2 roleplaying server that sadly died due to DM mismanagement (No, I'm not talking about the Baldur's Gate server, but the most popular one before it rose to the top). Aron was a genuinely nice person from the Evil Empire, and was basically an opposite-gender expy of Princess Euphemia from Code Geass. However, he was still a loyal citizen of the Evil Empire, and this colored the way I roleplayed him.

Fast forward to the release of Neverwinter, and I squeeze at being able to choose the Shadovar background. However, I wasn't allowed to choose Shar as my deity. Oh well, Selune will have to do. Fast forward even further towards Vellosk, and Aron is forced to side with the uneducated savages over his countrymen. What the fat? While Aron was a token good teammate of the Evil Empire, the one thing that he really didn't like were people who eschewed progress to cling to antiquated traditions. The Netherese have turned the once barren Anauroch Desert into a lush and fertile land, while these Forsworn are stuck at the hunter-gatherer level of development. Why the fiddlesticks am I helping these barbarians murder my people? They're only trying to improve their quality of life!

Four modules later, and I create Dale Keter the half-orc star pact warlock from Baldur's Gate. So far, so good. Then I meet a warlock lady in the Enclave telling me that, surprise, I actually made a deal with an archdevil, and not an eldritch abomination that dwells in the darkness between the stars. Ugh, more railroading, I thought. Until I finally got to meet my patron, and he actually gives me a choice between saving the girl or saving my own hide. WHAT?! A roleplaying choice? And he even asked me if I was sure about my answer! Sorry, dearie, but my patron is much hotter than you. He's on fire, after all. Literally. And so I ganked my colleague to earn my boss's favor.

It's a small choice in terms of gameplay, but it's a start. Baby steps and all that. I'm hoping that future content will allow for some choice in roleplaying, no matter how minor it may seem.

What do you think?

Yes! I want more choices! Though I have not made it to level 30 yet I am going to murder the lady and her slandering ways! Calling me a goody-two-shoes she is lucky I didn't cut her down then and there. :) We need more choices!

I think if you want rp and choice, nwn1/2 are still going strong with new servers, campaigns and custom content being made on a regular basis. Neverwinter Online has carried out the devs statements going back to pre-beta that it is an action game.

"Then I meet a warlock lady in the Enclave telling me that, surprise, I actually made a deal with an archdevil, and not an eldritch abomination that dwells in the darkness between the stars."

Obviously she's ill-informed, and just going with the status quo. Perhaps she's a bit crazy in the head, or thinking up answers on the spur of the moment?

The key to RP is being ADAPTABLE when neccisary. Adapt what's there (without ignoring it) and yourself to better suit the RP going on. for your character.

Nobody said a cardboard box has to be a cardboard box. Maybe it's a spaceship, or a sailboat, or a large enchanted chair? Point is - use your imagination as it's your best RP tool.

Well said. Heck, the deity on your character page could simply be what you told the Neverwinter guards when you first entered the city - maybe they demand to know who you pray to, so as to bar any potential "problem adventurers" from entry. You wisely spout some similar deity to the one you actually follow, so your behaviors are at least somewhat believable. Maybe you go along with what the warlock contact advises simply because your true patron wants to maintain the ruse within Neverwinter.

You need only exercise your imagination and creative skill in order to fit your story within the limitations of the framework you are provided.

Given that one of the things that drew me into Dungeons and Dragons initially was the roleplaying aspect of it, I absolutely support more RP choices in game. More Gods, more backstory options and maybe even NPCs referring to you by your race or background. Like, "oh, I can tell he's a Harborman." This is, of course, a reference from Neverwinter Nights 2.

Yup I really liked the warlock quests as well I knew she was up to something fishy and Belial giving me a choice? That was awesome she broke her pact so she died I want more roleplay choices like that. Her fault for assuming I was a "goodie" two shoes.
