I've been exploring Neverwinter for just about a week now, trying out different classes, etc. While I know things can change, perhaps dramatically, when you reach higher levels and the end game, the two classes with which I've clicked are trickster rogue and hunter ranger. Their playstyle is fluid, dynamic and fun. I've experimented with nearly all the others, and they just aren't as involving.
Problem is, I've heard the HR isn't especially beloved by groups...and the TR, as a single-target-focused class, is worse. So, I'm wondering, if I go with the HR, should I expect to be shunned or will groups be accepting?
Perhaps more importantly, when I'm in a group (even if I end up relying on /legit or guild runs where folks are happy to have me), will I feel like I meaningfully contribute?
Finally, what general HR build type would be most compatible with group play? Should I try to squeeze everything I can out of AOE DPS? What can an HR do to ensure that they feel most relevant in group success (and prove groups wrong when they underestimate you)?
Looking forward to your feedback, input, suggestions, advice, etc.
I play an HR as my main so I know a little about the difficulty of getting into parties. Let me try to answer your questions as best I can.
if I go with the HR, should I expect to be shunned or will groups be accepting?
That really depends. Some PUGs (pick up groups) will boot you depending on class, others for low GS. I would stick with the /legit channel to find groups that are more worried about having fun than grinding dungeons for loot to sell on the AH
will I feel like I meaningfully contribute?
I'm almost always in the middle of the DPS charts, sometimes higher, sometimes lower (multiple CWs/GWFs). I slot Rain of Arrows and Hindering shot while the CW and GWF are slamming the big guys. I use Aimed Shot on the main boss and split shot on mobs (if I can do it without drawing too much aggro). A lot of people don't want an HR because they spam slit shot then run towards other members to drop aggro. If you draw aggro, use Forest Ghost, stand still and let someone else draw the aggro. Don't force aggro on another teammate. At the end, if I've helped burn the boss, rain down extra DPS on mobs or whatever then yes I've contributed to the party.
This is a tough question with the feat tweak they did on Mod 4. I play full Archery so my style is to stand back and try to control some mobs and/or burn down the boss. If you like being in close, go melee. If you like to switch stances a lot, go hybrid. I'm too lazy to keep hitting tab for 25 minutes in SP so I stay Archery. Plus, I like the feats.
In the end, unless you're a CW or GWF, there will always be someone that complains about your lack of _____ or you're OP'ness in ______. Join a guild, find some friends, watch /legit channel. Always have fun and forget about those people that are just here to show how much better than you they are. Chances are, they aren't.
Archer spec and spam split shot is the new pve HR. Sad really as the class had so much potential as a stance changer and they went control with that tree...
Why would anybody take any dps over the OP CW right now? Why at all?
Bueller? Bueller?
Yep, no reason.

... you can run any DD with any combination of classes, even with the worst path chosen.
Join Legit, have fun, win for all.
You dont have to be archer spec, you dont need to win paingiver, you can go trapper if you want =P .
The game keeps getting worse due to the MY class should compete at all times no matter what crowd. Too many worry about the X screen and not the complete the DD and have fun crowd.
HRs are viable, hrs can be fun, all sorts of class combinations are viable. Ive done 5 man hr groups, Ive done 5 man dc groups, Ive done 5 man gwf groups through most of the t2s ive done rainbow parties through almost every DD there is.
IS CW the best class? yes.. should a few things be adjusted? maybe.. Should more people join legit, stop worrying about GS/paingiver and the X screen? Definitely..
5 man DC ToS .. priceless..
There are more then one way to play this game, its pretty flexible, they designed it that way and I wish more people would understand and enjoy it.
This made me grin, beat ToS the other day with another HR, an SW and 2 GWFs. So much fun.
I've played HR since they came out, and yes, it can be a difficult task getting into any group at times even at my sort of GS (19k atm). But that's because there's some snobby snobs out there who think that all HRs are huntards and dislike them full stop. I've lost count how many times I've topped the DPS list and beat CWs and GWFs into the ground. HRs can make a very positive contribution to their team, especially when it comes to bosses. Full archery spec and WOW you're sorted. But you don't have to be just archery spec. It's all up to playstyle. So the next time someone attempts to boot you for being an HR, keep in mind you did nothing wrong, they're just being dumb.

Squishy Destroyers will be asking for CWs instead of HRs likely still. Still a huge stigma between them and HRs.
I am a moderately geared HR (my best gear is the 4 pieces you can buy and improve in Icewind) and I've been intimidated into avoiding high end content. On a whim last night I queued up for Kessel's Retreat which is way higher than any content I have previously attempted. I died about halfway through and no one on my team bothered to rez me. I let them know it was my first time and asked for strategy on the final boss, and no one responded. I felt like an annoying step-cousin who tagged along against everyone's wishes. BUT.... When the smoke cleared I was shocked (shocked I tell you!) to find that I had almost a million and a half more damage than the second place person. I am feeling very good about my HR today.
Not to overstate the point but again /legit. Honestly I only delve with legit or guildies and I have 5 different classes. Before Mod4 I could out DPS a comprably geared GWF. And Mod4 gave HRs a noticable boost in damage. There is a PR problem but more and more players are accepting the HRs role as DPS and including it in that catagory. And not to beat it to death but legit will take you. If you don't know then ask as there are several experienced HRs there.

In my guild I am taken as a high dps class. I only have 16.5k gs so its not like i have anything special. I use the Dread Legion weapons and Royal guard armor set. I slot thorn ward rain of arrows and Split the sky. Rapid shot and Split shot. Seismic shot and disruptive shot. Aspect of the pack and twin-blade storm. Archery build. I usually am 1st or second in dps unless multiple sw or cw. I almost never switch into melee stance and spam my 3 aoe encounters whenever i can(which is a lot because of royal guard) then spam split and rapid, using seismic on groups of mobs to group them.
The HR has a high skill bar, but unlike most other games you are not rewarded as much for that high skill bar even when you do things perfectly. It does feel rewarding though, at least to me.
It's consistently in the middle for paingiver, even with hyperaggressive CW/GWF in the group. It also does get autokicked from the PUG Queue on occasion, but it isn't nearly as often as it is as a TR. (Not that this will make you feel better when it happens.)
It's a sometimes frustrating sometimes amazing style of play but the upper performance envelope has something of a disconnect in the given content in my opinion. Regardless, you can do a lot of different things with the HR so at least from the boredom angle you can always be trying something different and be effective with HR. That's one thing I really love about it, and something Cryptic has slowly been expanding on for the class. Killing Nature was a huge step in the right direction to, ironically, making the HR more accepted in PvE teams.
Now they just need to rework all those powers that Nature was using for party buffs and make them do something value added as they have, in effect, been nerfed into super uselessness in virtually every situation without the Nature cap stone. (Not to say that they were effective at anything before, but they are even worse now. Go figure.)
