So.. with my Aimed Shot I might crit max maybe 105K-120K or so on my own, maybe get close to 200k with a full grp of debuffing/etc..
but with my Rapid Shot.. it seems like after every successive crit the damage multiplies more and more and more.. and doesn't stop until you miss a crit.
for example: on the vartiling/charthraxis... when I am attacking them my Rapid shot will start off with maybe something like this:
1st 2-3 shots: 7k-18k
next shots: 40-70k
next: 80-110k
next: 140-190k
I've gotten up to about 330K per shot before it resetting.. mostly due to pulling agro. It seems to lost it once you let go of rapid shot/move/cast something/etc. But once I start over I can get up to that high again as long as I dont move.
just seems weird to me that the highest damage I've done with one shot is with a Rapid Shot? Is there some kind of passive I am not seeing here that increases damage after each crit no matter what? I know we have that feat inc. crit severity but it only goes up to +15%.. so not really sure.
My crit severity is around 140% or so w/buffs/etc.
The game displays a running tab of total crit damage from the same abilities. You'll see a number and then it goes into the added sum. The sum is not what the one shot is doing, but what it and all the ones before it have done.

That doesn't really make any sense... why would it not show you the damage you are doing as you do it?
also, the number wouldn't reset by this logic if I keep shooting.
looked on log while on a test dummy.. but still dont understand why it randomly resets after a random number of shots
what i think:
1. this is a stupid set up, and makes it difficult for people to tell what their abilities are really doing/worth
2. makes it so you can't really test anything out unless you use an actual dmg calculator, which you have to get from a 3rd party

seems really stupid on NW's end.
1) It's user error on your end. Cryptic includes a chat tab combat log that is mostly accurate that can also be imported into 3rd party programs to consolidate that information into graphs any idiot can understand. The raw data is also easy to understand.
2) You can test out anything you want without using any parse programs at all. Open the 'Combat' chat tab. It is not Cryptic's fault that you can't do math or read an in-depth breakdown of your actual damage.
TL;DR don't pay attention to the running tally on-screen popup. Your combat log will give you the damage of each individual shot. The on screen infographic is for quick information while in combat, not in depth parse analysis.

Paying attention to the On Screen damage gives you an idea of your DPS at any given time.
Yes they have a combat log, where you can get a 3rd party program to measure youre damage/skills/etc... yet there are none that are very good/user friendly.
I appreciate your aggressive approach and implying I'm an idiot - but please, give me a logical explanation on why you even need to see a running tally of your accumulated crit damage from one skill over a period of 10-20 seconds - so please tell me what this 'quick information while in combat' is useful for, instead of the Actual damage you are doing? It's just a stupid way to put big numbers on your screen.
In-depth breakdown of my actual damage? aka scrolling up over the corse of a 3 minute battle? Do you know how many different abilities/damage sources there are even over 60 seconds? Poison dots, boons, at wills, dailies, 3 encounters. Yeah, Sorry, it is my fault that I can't scroll through 40000 entries of damage from each individual skill/dmg proc.

Actually, I started using ACT, and I find it very good/user friendly.
It allowed my to discern that rapid shot is about 30-40% less DPS than Aimed Shot.
