Trying to tank Black Ice Beholder...

Any GFs tried and done this successfully? The last times I have tried it's attacks seem quite unblockable and even with 30k+ HP and 5k+ defense will often kill me :O Seems a bit unfair, especially for those of us trying to somehow get our BI sword eventually...

Side note: The dracolich in Castle Never has for a while been able to ignore block with its wing knockback ability, hopefully that isn't working as intended cos it does make that fight a bit annoying at times :o I could also swear they changed that fight recently too cos last times I tried there was way more red/hand attacks than I remember...

I tried to tank his red AOE once and I was one-shotted through block, so now I just run when I see it.
PSA: You don't need to grind Spinward Rise for your Elemental artifact main hand if you have some AD lying around. You can craft it via the Tyranny of Dragon's campaign screen.

It's not just the beholder. Trying to tank the adds are just as bad. I end up running most of the fight..lol

I don't have a problem with the adds... but currently we cannot tank the Beholder. I have tried multiple times since Mod4 has been up. With the current shield and us absorbing 80% and still being hit for 20%... We will die. I have over 40k hp, assload of DR and Deflect... and I can withstand 1 AoE red. We also do not run fast enough to run out of it, once our shield has been raised. Although on my GWF... I can tank him easily (increased sprint, etc.). So, in this instance PWE tank fail... other than that...

Hmm I can't tell if either it's attacks do so much damage that even blocking 80% of it isn't enough...or it's just ignoring our shield/block, I suspect the latter tbh :( Yes the adds also tend to overwhelm me too though, a) cos too many of them at once and b) HEs often aren't organised enough to get any kind of proper healing to keep me alive. Yet to get a Great Success on that fight.... :(

The Beholder is a guaranteed insta-kill against any other class caught in it, so I'd say that it does such an insane amount of damage that even taking 20% of it through guard is enough to kill most GFs.

I've survived the red aoe lots of times pre mod4, haven't tried it in 3 since I got my main hand already.

not only Beho, i tried tank Remo as well, it must be funny to watch. i was half death all the time, extremely lucky to survive to the end, but still no great success. my guildie, another GF that killing that Remo, play more damage dealt and get bracers. i made several encounters, tried tank as much as possible, but small reward, no great success. then i try damage dealt abilities and i was more succesfull (more black ice and even great success). so if you want BI drop, make conqueror and deal damage

5k defense is too much, go down to 4k and get more hp +regen.

I can keep shield down and still survive the beholders Aoe, I'm at 47k hp and that seems to do well. Just look out for the red circles and lift shield in time, soulforge is also a big help incase you do get caught.

Wrong, I used to tank it with my GWF, Destroyer + 45k hp + Purified BI set. He did like 20k-30k hits on me but I was able to recover my HP thx to life steal and my DPS.

yeah, but you must first drop bracers to create purified set, thats the point ;). play icewind dale from first day and still dont see bracers or main hand on my GF. first month very actively

His red AOE and you were not in Unstoppable?

Maybe if you already have your gear, but I have a hard time believing that a CW or GWF in regular T2 gear with 22 - 26k HP can tank the Beholder's AOE when my 32k HP (I don't have a full BI set and even if I did I won't farm in it because Timeless is a far superior DPS set) GF gets obliterated by it.

Yes, his AoE and everything else. You need BI gear, it's a must, that crazy AoE that he uses is pure BI dmg that we can't resist unless we use the BI set, I tried like the usual GWF AoW set and 26k-28k HP and got insta killed ofc so that strategy doesn't work well. I'm very sure that a GF wearing that BI set with a good HP pool would be able to tank him easily.

Answer: Purified/Corrupted BI set. All mobs in IWD do % of their damage as "ice" damage. And "ice" damage ignore normal DR. Dps of simple mobs is quite low so you can't barely see blue numbers. But Beholder's aoe hits very hard. So, you are hit for, lets say 60k by aoe. BI set consumes half of it and you live. Normal gear pass whole damage through. Not sure about block. Maybe it's buged against ice damage too.

Yeh forgot that it would obviously do black ice damage for attacks like that, and I use the Fabled set from MC currently so 0 black ice damage :(
That said another thing I got to test recently is that I could swear the damage will even ignore 'immune' status. As in I'm a SM GF and always have Steel Defense equipped, but still took massive damage from a red attack right after a daily... :O

Yes, his dmg does go through immune but not all of it, only about 5-10% so its no where near enough to kill you.

It's definately the BI resistance because I can tank that thing all day with BI. My GWF however that just runs IWD in AoW either has to be in unstoppable or sprint out of the way for the big hit.

You recogn only 5-10% gets through when immune eh? But then it still hit me for like 30k, which is nearly all my HP :( Fyi I dont believe in stacking HP if it means your defenses suffer as then there isnt much point if you are getting hit for high damage each hit. Will prolly try again soon tho with BI weapon set and see if it makes a difference tho... :> Just seems like those attacks either do major overkill damage or seem to be able to ignore block/guard and/or immune status.
