Game crashed when attempting to travel, now cannot get into game world

I'm new to playing Neverwinter, started playing about 8 hours ago now, actually played for about 4 hours and managed to get my character about half-way through level 5 in that time, despite getting 3-4 random game crashes. Then about 3 hours ago I got the quest "The Trail of the Crown" from Sgt. Knox so found a gate, selected Blacklake District to travel to and when the loading screen appeared the game crashed. Since then, every time I run the game I select my character, click on the "Enter World" button, the loading screen appears and then the game crashes. I've tried 5 times, I let the launcher do it's "force verify" thing, but each time I get the same result with; select my character, click "Enter World" button, loading screen appears and game crashes.

I've tried browsing through the forums for a similar problem, I did find the pixel shader compilation failure thread which I checked as I do get 4 pixel shader compilation errors as the game loads and, having read through that I did post there about this problem but then a PW staff post stated that the pixel shader mentioned in that error is just a benign error message about something that's not used in DX9. So I guess that's not the cause of my game crashes, therefore I'm hoping someone can provide some assistance in helping to fix whatever's gone wrong.

I'm starting to think that maybe it's a problem with the character, possibly somehow "stuck" due to the failed travel attempt and if so I have no idea how to go about fixing that. Don't really want to delete the character as I've already claimed some exclusive reward items on that character etc. So what else can I try to fix this problem with the game crashing when it starts to load the game world?

EDIT: Posted here in the "Bug Reports" forum because when I tried the "Technical Support" forum link I get the following error:
An error occurred while processing your request.

I can only say that I have almost the same probelm as you. I went to blacklake district and was in the middle of the quest to get the slime samples, when the game crashed and since then I can not log into the game again, always crashing to desktop at the map loading screen.

In the other thread here I read that someone was able to change the directx mode in the display tab. However I can not find such an option in my game. According to my system specs I am using directx 11.
    Suggestions to improve NW:
    - Dualspec
    - Better rewarding foundry and foundry pvp maps
    - Custom PvP leagues with leaderboards instead of the current 'matchmaking'.
    - Armory
    - make jumping cost stamina (to reduce hopping in pvp)

Wells I still cannot get the character to load into the game world. According to the character select screen the character is in Blacklake District but every single time that I select that character and click on "Enter World", the loading screen appears followed by the progress bar starting to move and then stopping (at the exact same point every time) followed by the game crashing.

I then get the Cryptic Error box which asks me to explain what I was doing, I write out a brief report and click on the "Submit" button. Then it either completes the sending process or it just does nothing further and I have to use Task Manager to close it (I've also noticed that the GameClient.exe is also stuck "running" and I have to force close that as well).

I've tried creating a new character to test if another character would load into the game world and that was fine. Played through the tutorial and arrived in Neverwinter without any problems. Switched back to the character select screen, selected my first character (the one that's apparently in Blacklake District) and the same problem occured (click on "Enter World", the loading screen appears followed by the progress bar starting to move and then stopping (at the exact same point every time) followed by the game crashing)!

I've also tried on a completely different computer but that made no diffference, so it's not my computer at fault nor is it the game install itself. It seems that my character that's supposedly in Blacklake District is somehow bugged and just cannot actually enter the game world anymore!

So, I need to report this bug and get some support to help me fix the problem, but how do I go about getting some actual, real support from Cryptic and/or Perfect World to get this screw up with their game fixed? I get the impression that posting in this so-called "Bug Reports" forum is simply a waste of time as no-one from either Cryptic or Perfect World will ever actually respond to offer any real assistance. The "Technical Support" forum is locked and just causes an error, so that's just useless. Clearly neither Cryptic or Perfect World want to make gaining real tech support easy for their customers! :(

EDIT: Just tried running the game in "Safe Mode", but that made no difference either! :(

Finally managed to find the Support link on the main Arc website and I have now submitted a ticket in regards to this issue. Guess I just have to wait for a response that will hopefully provide a working solution, because so far everything I've tried has failed! :(

I already wrote a ticket about this matter, the suggestion so far is to force verify my files. I did this, but it doesnt resolve the issue. Hopefully they find a solution, all I can provide is the

    error ID 14207863

since this is all the info NW provides for me.

Every time I run the launcher after a game crash it runs a "force verify", for some reason that option in the launcher settings is automatically selected after a game crash (at least it is for me) so after every game crash I let the launcher do it's force verify but that hsan't made any difference so far. Think I'm now up to about 10 attempts to log that one character into the game world without success. Been doing dome digging around in the game's files and folders and I've found a file called "hog_errors.log" in the "D:\Games\Perfect World Entertainment\Neverwinter_en\Neverwinter\Live" folder, opened the file and it shows this:

Force verifying the files isn't fixing that issue, I've checked the file properties for that bins.hogg file and it's a 3.00 GB (3,222,371,807 bytes) filesize! As far as I can tell the dates/times for each of those errors is the same as when I've attempted to log my first character into the game world in Blacklake District so something tells me that it's that particular file that's the cause of my problem. If so, how do I fix that "File read from disk has bad CRC." error when the force verify isn't fixing it?

After some more digging around in the games install folders I've found two more log files, both in the "D:\Games\Perfect World Entertainment\Neverwinter_en" folder, a "force_verify.log" and another "hog_errors.log" and both of these files show even more problems with that "D:/Games/Perfect World Entertainment/Neverwinter_en/Neverwinter/Live/piggs/bins.hogg" file!

    The "force_verify.log" shows:
    140820 00:17:24 15 [1]: File checksum invalid in hogg: bin/geobin/ol/e/1/NWNO_SkyBox1.mset
    140820 00:46:40 5 [1]: File checksum invalid in hogg: bin/geobin/ol/e/1/S/Genericprops_Shrines.mset
    140820 00:46:40 7 [1]: File checksum invalid in hogg: bin/geobin/ol/e/1/S/Sewers_Sidequest_Wipingoutwererats_01.mset
    140820 00:46:40 9 [1]: File checksum invalid in hogg: bin/geobin/ol/e/1/S/Statue_Sleeve_01.mset
    140820 00:46:40 11 [1]: File checksum invalid in hogg: bin/geobin/ol/e/1/S/Sharandar_Redcap_Cages.mset
    140820 00:46:40 13 [1]: File checksum invalid in hogg: bin/geobin/ol/e/1/S/Sharandar_Elven_Boat.mset

and then it simply repeats those 6 lines (with different dates / timestamps) for every force verify that has been run.

    The "hog_errors.log" shows:
140819 18:56:05 4 [1]: File read from disk has bad CRC. Verifying Files in the launcher may fix this issue.: D:/Games/Perfect World Entertainment/Neverwinter_en/Neverwinter/Live/piggs/bins.hogg: bin/geobin/ol/e/1/S/Genericprops_Shrines.mset: 20
140819 18:56:05 6 [1]: File read from disk has bad CRC. Verifying Files in the launcher may fix this issue.: D:/Games/Perfect World Entertainment/Neverwinter_en/Neverwinter/Live/piggs/bins.hogg: bin/geobin/ol/e/1/S/Sewers_Sidequest_Wipingoutwererats_01.mset: 20
140819 18:56:05 8 [1]: File read from disk has bad CRC. Verifying Files in the launcher may fix this issue.: D:/Games/Perfect World Entertainment/Neverwinter_en/Neverwinter/Live/piggs/bins.hogg: bin/geobin/ol/e/1/S/Statue_Sleeve_01.mset: 20
140819 18:56:05 10 [1]: File read from disk has bad CRC. Verifying Files in the launcher may fix this issue.: D:/Games/Perfect World Entertainment/Neverwinter_en/Neverwinter/Live/piggs/bins.hogg: bin/geobin/ol/e/1/S/Sharandar_Redcap_Cages.mset: 20
140819 18:56:05 12 [1]: File read from disk has bad CRC. Verifying Files in the launcher may fix this issue.: D:/Games/Perfect World Entertainment/Neverwinter_en/Neverwinter/Live/piggs/bins.hogg: bin/geobin/ol/e/1/S/Sharandar_Elven_Boat.mset: 20
140819 18:56:05 14 [1]: File read from disk has bad CRC. Verifying Files in the launcher may fix this issue.: D:/Games/Perfect World Entertainment/Neverwinter_en/Neverwinter/Live/piggs/bins.hogg: bin/geobin/ol/e/1/NWNO_SkyBox1.mset: 20

and it also then repeats those 6 lines (with different dates / timestamps) which appears to be the times when the game has crashed.

Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this error? Clearly the force verify isn't fixing it so what else can I try?

Interestingly... I have a similar problem but with a different file:
140819 06:05:38 1 InvalidType[1]: File read from disk has bad CRC. Verifying Files in the launcher may fix this issue.: C:/Games/Cryptic Studios/Neverwinter/Live/piggs/bins.hogg: Bin/Geobin/Ol/E/1/P/Ships_Airship_01.Mset: 20

This repeats basically at various dates.

On the preview shard for module 4 I got a crash to desktop when I tried to enter sharandar with one of my toons, stating that a certain .hogg file does not match (at that time we had module 3). Force verify didnt recognize any of that. I did report that problem in the preview bug section here. This preview version is now live, however I have not attempted to enter the sharandar zone since, because I fear that I simply bug another of my characters with this.

It's just a different file contained in the same "/Neverwinter/Live/piggs/bins.hogg" file. As I understand it those *.hogg files are simply a special type of compressed archive file used by Cryptic Studios for their games.

I've been running various searches to see if I coud find any possible solutions, I did find a few old archived threads from the old Star Trek Online forums and a couple from these Neverwinter forums. It seems the most common option to fix this type of error is to "remove" the relevant file (either move it to another folder or just rename it) and then run a force verify which *should* pick up the missing file and then download a new copy.

I'm not sure if that's the best option just yet though as Shard maintenance is due to start in just over an hour and I think there's a patch being released to fix various other issues. I don't know if a patch would replace or just update files, so I'm a bit reluctant to remove a file so that the launcher can download a new copy if the patch coming in a few hours will simply replace the file with a new version anyway.

When I installed Neverwinter (2 days ago now) the launcher was reporting a total download size of 12GB which, for me, wasn't exactly a quick process! Unfortunately I wasn't able to leave the launcher running to download and install the entire 12GB in one single session and I eventually had to domplete it in 3 seperate sessions, all of which took a total of almost seven hours!

Guess I'm also kind of hoping for some replies from someone with more knowledge about this type of error / problem. I may be a bit over-cautious but I'd rather that than end up rushing ahead and making things even worse.

I will try that option (i.e. cut that file to a different place and run a force verify) if the new patch doesnt work. Lets hope for the best!

Yeah, been thinking much the same. I've received an email confirmation for my support ticket which states:
Your question has been received. Due to high ticket volumes at this time, we will respond to your question as soon as possible.
So I guess I'm going to be waiting a while for any sort of response from Cryptic or PW for my support ticket. In light of that I'm now thinking I'll let the launcher update with the new patch and then run a force verify to see what pops into the "force_verify.log". If the same errors still appear then I'll just move the "bins.hogg" file and run another force verify to force the launcher to download a new copy of that file. Hopefully then the new file will be clean and free of errors!

Really wish there was a retail edition of this game available, that would make the whole installation process so much easier and faster, as well as making reinstalls etc a much simpler process!

Well, unfortunately that solution didnt worked for me. The launcher first crashed, at the 2nd time it patched that .hogg file again (by the way, the new .hogg file is slightly smaller than the original one). I entered the game on a 'working' toon with no issues. Then I tried to change to a character which was constantly crashing... and crashed to desktop with the same error ID.

I am considering a complete reinstallation of the game, but probably the reason is more subtle or is in a different file which causes these wrong CRC checks. I think that the .hogg file may not even be corrupt, but perhaps the check is bugged. I am also in contact with the CS.

Sorry to hear this solution didn't work for you. :(

I've had a slow evening waiting for the patch to download and update, it took over 3 hours (launcher didn't seem to want to patch at first) but once it had finished patching I ran a force verify but the same 6 errors still appeared in the "force_verify.log" so I went to the "..\Perfect World Entertainment\Neverwinter_en\Neverwinter\Live\piggs" folder and moved the "bins.hogg" file to a different hard drive (to ensure it was out of the way). Ran another force verify which started by checking files but then the launcher switched to patching, that took another couple of hours but once it had finished I did yet another force verify and then checked the "force_verify.log" and there were no new entries!

Ran the game, selected the "stuck" character and clicked on the "Enter World" button, loading screen appeared, progress bar started to move then stopped at the usual point but, instead of the game crashing the progress bar started moving again! The loading continued normally and my character finally entered the game world! :)

I've just checked the file properties of the new "bins.hogg" file and it shows a filesize of 3.20 GB (3,440,420,646 bytes) which is larger than the one I had previously which was 3.00 GB (3,222,371,807 bytes).

Ok, I now deleted the \localdata\GamePrefs.pref (again) and at the same time the bins.hogg in \live and in \preview.

This time the launcher downloaded the .hogg (last time he simply 'patched') and after that I can finally log into the game again! Thanks again, this solution worked now also for me.
