Hello everyone,im pretty much new on Neverwinter, but not when it comes to gaming. So i would really like to share the feeling how does this game feel for someone who is new.
First of all, game has a really big potential,i really like the idea,i like the style of gaming,it is really fun..that is where fun stops.
Neverwinter offers really low amount of freedom due to things being either BoA,BoC or insanely overpriced (overpriced very if you look at the amount of currency a player can make in a game).
Leveling is fun,but at lvl 60 game starts i saw ppl say. To be honest, all i felt when i reached lvl 60,did my first Campaign quests, tried lvl 60 Domination (where of course i got overrun by ppl with 14-18k GS) was pain and depression.
Why? Its simple,as i said above, freedom in Neverwinter is heavily bound by rules that are put in game. Amount of farmable AD is not even close to enough to get decently geared to be able to normaly play content for incredibly looong time. And game isnt offering any fun to a new player whatsoever, besides daily quests that give you laughable amount of AD (with even that being bound by RAD and daily limit).
Yes,you need to earn with this game, this is only a business for you in the end. But how you even expect a player to give you money if you dont offer freedom of gaming and fun content to a player? So many restrictions, so low amount of farmable AD per day,so many limitations. The more time i spend in the game, more frustrating it gets.
I do read forums, and i see a lot of new restrictions and limitations coming with time, yes, you do earn money in here, but i bet, most of ppl playing get really frustrated with this game. Now as a new player, imagine how it feels.
Getting endgame enchantments in this game, artifacts, companions and other endgame things in this game is not worth the time spending. Cause even when you get it finaly after HAMSTER days,it is still BoC (want another character? farm again)
This game heavily makes players to spend money on it,to be able to go trough the full content (or die farming),but sadly...does not offer enough of fun, playable, freedom content to be worth to invest any money whatsoever.
And im really sad to see game this good,be ruined by so many restrictions and limitations.
That is how this game feels for a new player. Thank you
PS this is my >opinion< about the game, and this is how game felt for >me< .

Play the game as if it were a single player experience. Ignore PvP initially. Do the campaign from 1 to 60, then at 60 go to Sharandar and the Dread Ring, and run your dailies. Don't view your character in comparison to what other people have. By running the 2 initial campaigns, you'll eventually get some purple items.
Look at the professions as a mini-game, and run tasks at whatever pace is comfortable for you. I prefer leadership, but you may want to rank up the armor profession for your given class, so you can make a shirt and pants for yourself. Make sure to invoke at least once a day, so you get that initial chunk of ADs a well. By the time you get to 60, the ADs you earned on your way there, just from invoking, will more than cover you upgrading to blue items. The random purple drops from Dread Ring or Feywild can then be used to supplement that.
Once you are comfortable playing as a level 60, try some T1 dungeons and/or Gauntlgrym and Skirmishes - be sure to grab the related daily quests for these, for extra ADs. Get yourself a set of T1 gear, and by that time, you should have the 1st three boons from dread ring. Now you're ready to give Icewind Dale a shot. It'll be tough w/ just that T1 gear, so hopefully you've supplemented that with either Unicorn seal items, or you've given T2 a shot and have some of those items.
tl:dr version: Don't compare yourself to other players. Play the content, find what playstyle suits you and your character, and hopefully you've made a few friends along the way!
*Note: I'm not against PvP; I just feel that it is a "more advanced" part of the game that requires a heavier investment in terms of grinding for gear and playing the "meta-game", which I personally find unappealing.

Thank you for nice tips and guides, appreciate it all.
Even if that is not the full game content, that is playing only what you are able too. And in the end, this game requires some team work,so cant really expect to have a good solo days either. Decent factions dont take low GS players, and dungeons are a pain in PUGs,mostly wont even be able to finish a dungeon, cause it fails on last boss, ppl start leaving.
And yes, gaming for sure is exploring things, playing alone or with other ppl, having fun in some fantasy world. But sadly this world has way too many limitations and restrictions that hit your head here and there as you play. What at least for me,ruins the exp of gaming.
As i mentioned above,it takes a lot of time to get decent things, and in the end, most of those get to be BoC...so if you want a new character, you need to just simply again spend HAMSTER days to get those things that are again heavily limited and hard obtainable. And you sure have a need to play new character,if not cause you like to have more than one..its cause Neverwinter keeps popping new classes and heavy changes.
As i said,i like this game, but as much as i like this game, frustration that i feel makes me log only to do daily (till one day i reach enough currency to get something decent) and go play something else. By far not making me invest any money into something that slowly turns into a "2nd hand" game, cant imagine at the moment strongly playing this game,or investing in it in the future.
the company has just banned over a 1000 bot accts.
when reading zone, you have a stream of gold sellers. These are there because of the people supporting them instead of the game.
These have not helped the economy.
The BOP items are because of all the people who were;
I need this for an alt,
I need this for my companion,
I need this to sell,
when items were need or greed.
They tried changing it to class only but that didn't help.
Then we have the exploit runners.(dungeon runs that is). They got so bad that an entire chat channel and attached guilds were started for people who DIDN'T want to exploit.
Yes the game has possibilities, me I would prefer more map to explore since i have no interest in end game or PvP but thats ok. Most of the people here seem to be doing ok.
the crafting system is actually quite good and you can check the AH for ingredients and items that you make which are in demand and sell them. This is not just high level stuff but common ingredients. Alchemy especially goes through a lot.
I had(just wiped 4) because I like having multiple characters. What is available does not affect that. if I don't like the class, I won't play it.
also check out the combat section or PvP for hints on builds and combat.
to be maxed out you need probably more than 60kk and this is something you can reach by spending money or farm no stop for 1 year and half holding your money, doing right investiments and have profit.
i choose to spend money while having always some ADs trying to have some profits with and it works.
But this is because when i do i thing i usually try to do the best i can.
So you have to understand that you dont need any high end goodies to enjoy the game but when it come to pvp competition starts.
Find a guild, run gaunt dungeons every 3 hours, run dungeons with guildies in need of a set and take the drop for yourself and doing 1M per week will start to be a thing.
i dont like it tho, 1 week of work for the equivalent of 10 euros....i would rather prefer to work in real life for 2 hours more and cash those 20 euros.
Here's what i think is a shortcut to getting geared and enjoying the pve experience.
While leveling, enjoy the content, but be sure to check with Rhix and grab the dailies to get free AD for stuff that you will be doing anyway, the dungeon and skirmish ones. Remember to invoke (up to 3x per day). I've gotten a few coal wards from the 7 day chest, so it's worth saving up. Keep every rank 3 and 4 enchantments and lesser marks of potency you get for later. Start ranking a profession to level 20, leadership can generate small amounts of AD but it isn't as important earlier on. Doing your classes' armor or weapon profession to 20 will be faster. Eventually you will need to get armor, weapon and leadership to lvl 20.
When you hit lvl 60, go straight to the AH and buy +5 blue equipment including blue non-gemmed shirt and pants. They will put you in the comfortable 9-10k range for starting on Sharandar and Dread Ring dailies. Start doing both immediately because the 1st 3 boons on Dread Ring and 1st 2 boons on Sharandar are quick to unlock and boosts your GS significantly . Dread Ring especially rewards you with marks, refining stones and enchants. You should be able to craft rank 5 enchants very quickly while doing the dailies.
Lastly, all you need now is some epic gear, and you should already be powerful enough to join dungeons and stand a better chance at success. An advice is to join the Legit channel and find like minded people to group for dungeons. It will take some time to get your full T2 sets, but meanwhile, you would be collecting drake seals to spend on vendor for epic gear as well and they can be salvaged for more AD. Save up those to buy your gemmed purple shirt and pants. Then just move your rank 5 enchantments over to your new gear. That's pretty much all you need to enjoy the pve experience, and likely cost you less then 20k AD. Where you decide to go from there is up to you, further upgrade your gear or just play content for fun as it comes out.
Regarding Domination, since the introduction of Tenacity and PVP boons, newcomers will start at a disadvantage. If you want to prepare for pvp, then grit your teeth for the domination dailies, but importantly do the GG ones as well. Doing them concurrently is the fastest way to get a full set of T1 PVP gear.
I used to recruit newbies only to my guild (to raise my own reliable minions muhahaha) as many players keep playing the game if somebody shows them how to do the things but now, after I recruited 6 decent tails (tieflings >.>) and 4 of them quit after hitting lvl 60, I realized that the game was just to hard for them. Those coalescent wards cost a small fortune...
I remember how fun it was being non lvl 60 last year and I think it is still is. But lvl 60 must be a big frustration for lvl 60. Especially for those who picked GF or TR as their class.
I find the OP shocking, especially considering how much harder it is to "farm" gear in games like WoW. Scratch that - farming for the best gear in WoW is impossible without a good guild.
Perhaps the game's "L" interface (the one with all the links to dungeons, skirmishes and Rhix) badly needs an upgrade. Posts like this are just sad, and perhaps reveal just how badly new players need a better interface-guide especially considering how these days you gain levels so fast I have new players in Sharandar asking me what the "big orange numbers" are supposed to mean.
Perhaps there should also be better support for player channels. Going by the foundry it seems the original intent was that players do their part in making the game come alive. Better support for custom channels, like say a featured Tavern icon in the "L" interface that allows new people to visit custom channel groups as if they were real organizations (like Legit would get a virtual tavern and a unique interface that allows for easier grouping - I can easily imagine a newbie support channel springing up if this happened). Better support/interface for guilds would also help. Failing that, I guess it might be a good idea to create a more exhaustive buddy-type interface for new players. Or something.
With the mod4 deadline just around the corner though we may have to wait a while for the issue to be addressed.
Anyway, as other people have said gearing up in Neverwinter is definitely not hard. In fact you could just keep doing your dailies and you'll likely end up in mostly purples after a month or two. You could cut that time in half by doing dungeons, and if you visit channels like legit for help clearing dungeons you'll probably end up in mostly T1s/T2s within the week.
You there. New to the game? Feeling overwhelmed? Maybe you think getting to end-game is impossible for a casual player like yourself, or maybe you just need to be around a community that helps each other stay sane and competitive with the latest news, current trends, random chitchat and most of all LEGIT (that is, we try to keep things fair) gameplay. If you don't mind being around quirky people and the rare occasional drama (one of our prominent TR members is apparently a mafia godfather) join nw_legit_community at http://www.nwlegitcommunity.shivtr.com/forum_threads/2330542.

Ahmmmm
Ice Wind Dale offers players a full set + weapons corrupted and purified that everyone can obtain by doing daily quests. It's not the best, but right up there of course.
I think this is a great starting point for a lot of players.
We have 3 campaigns atm.You can find gear easier than before. With the blue items you can run all T1 dungeons. And with the purple items from campaigns you can skip all T1 dungeons and go straight to T2 dungeons. Before sharandar and dread ring it was indeed hard for a new player with no guild to farm t2 dungeons. And also now with salvage you can earn ad faster too.You just need to do something on your own and dont expect to buy anyhting from ah.You have plenty of choices to farm for your gear and ad.I have all classes 60lvl and had no problem to find them gear and AD.
I am not certain about what to think about this thread. First off, you say you are an experienced gamer, not new to MMOs and other online games, but everything you say points to the opposite. I mean no disrespect, but judging by what you see as a problem (a lot of time required to get items, players who have been playing the game a long time stomping in PvP etc.) is not realy a problem in these games, it is the core of every MMO out there.
What good would having everything unbound be? Anyone that joins the game could get endgame gear just after 60. There would be no point in running anything more then once-twice because there is litelary nothing to be obtained, you bought it all. We would most likely have full geared CWs running around repeling everything in dungeons, driving melees nuts.
You also say that this game makes players spend money to be able to play. It feels to me like you haven't even tried to play, you just jumped to this conclusion after you say stuff on AH is expensive. This game is one of the BEST for fresh 60 players. People carry me trough dungeons I could never do with my gearscore, and say "no problem man, we got you" and they are just random people. PvP is not so forgiving, but I Can still run around, cap bases and hold them. Yeah, you are **** right that perfect enchants that had dozen of coal wards spent on them are going to be expensive. And yeah, this game has created an enviroment that is very good for people that want to engage in economy of the game. But you show them as problems, while they are oportunities. You dont want to farm AD? No problem man, you can get solid gear with seals and glory. They even give you the option to obtain zen trough AD, which very few other MMOs do so liberaly. I'm sorry, I realy dont find a problem with the endgame system of this game, maybe just the fact that it is a bit too easy

I agree with OP.
Some state "all you have to do is grind fro a year and a half to get maxed."
Too long sry.
I have around 20k games in world of tanks, played for 3 years at Evony:Age1. Both are considered grinding games.
World of Tanks is an endless grind as more tanks always get added, Evony you had to stay on line and grind food 18 hours a day.
In both games I felt as if I was PROGRESSING!
In this game you log on and do dailies for two weeks to get an enchant upgrade.
If 1000 hrs or more is the expected amount of time I am supposed to play the limited game content for each character to progress, then i find another game.
As it is the only real fun part of game anymore is starting over and leveling again, at least then you get some progression.
I'm not talking gear, i'm talking arti and enchant upgrades. Gear is fine where it is, not too hard to get.
You could farm a year of your life away to get the enchants needed to upgrade one Artifact to legendary.

This ^
As some of you got me wrong by focusing entirely on talk about gear, gear truly is easy to get. Many many ways of getting gear, but how much does that gear worth here for real? Is it 50%?
Enchantments, artifacts and companions are where game truly shines. Im new here, but not new to gaming..i found my ways of getting gear of course,as many other things. My lvl 60 GWF has full Grim Sentinel set,not the best there is,but for sure a nice start.
My 60 HR has half of Royal Guard gear, rest is T1s that i picked here and there, also obtained Raven Skull and pvp Vanguard artifact, green of course, but its something. I got really lucky with preservation ward, had few in bag,was taking space, said to hell with it,got 4 shards of soulforged, paf got super lucky and it worked in 2nd try.
As well as i got lucky enough and got coal ward from that 7 days chest thingie, made myself normal PF.
As some of you stated some things, like that i cant find my way in this game, its not like that,as you can see,for someone who is new, playing alone without any help, and didnt invest any money,im doing pretty good. And i planned to keep that way,but it didnt work,as days kept passing by,i lost my will..already said everything above.
It takes seriously long time to obtain some things (worth enchantments, companion, artifacts, upgrades). That are BoC..and with Neverwinter getting new classes..every,what..6 months? And big changes to already existing classes, new areas. It is hard to keep your head straight and continue to work really long time for something, when you know in few months it could totally change.
I like this game, and it would be much more enjoyable to play if RAD would be removed,or at least daily limitation for it increased. Why limit spending the currency for a player, that player farmed for himself? Other thing is,if some things..(companions,artifacts and some pieces of gear) would be BoA instead of BoC.
That way player can keep things that he worked for and use on other chars he makes, what of course, makes farming much more worth than it is at the moment. Not to mention ppl would buy character slots more, cause its easyer to just get a character slot, than farm all over some things.
And if you would say that it would affect low lvl gameplay,to be honest, low lvl gameplay is already affected by epic weapons, use of endgame enchantments and its so short, that it wont even matter in the end.
Thank you,and again, this is just my opinion i have about the game.
You are not definitely talking about low level gameplay, you are whining about not having progress as an end-game player. Neverwinter end-game, unfortunately, is a very different thing from "low level" gameplay. Neverwinter end-game is about planning long term if you don't want to spend any money on zen - relying on events for AD/upgrades, learning to use your time carefully, playing the market, running the right dungeons, getting in a good guild, etc.
It's funny that you mention new content considering how many items in the game have been BiS (or close to BiS) for a year.
Essentially your mistake is that you're not planning long-term. This is no longer early game. You claim to be a new player but it takes a staggering amount of effort to get any of the Vanguard artifacts. I don't think it's possible for someone to keep calling themselves a "new player" after that grind.
Your goal now is AD flow. You don't need BiS gear on your alts for them to do dailies well, you just need decent gear. You can give them +5 blues and they'll be fine as long as they stay away from PvP. You don't even need to do all the dailies, you just need to do the high reward ones or Neverember's dailies. Leadership levels slowly but it will definitely help in the long-term.
Focus on buying character slots first so you have more people to do dailies/professions with. Wait for promos/sales before acting. Given the amount of effort you spent getting that Vanguard you could have farmed yourself several character slots and be doing multiple dailies/professions by now, passing along any extra AD gain to your main character. Depending on your luck you could be making at least twice as much AD now if you had focused on AD flow instead of getting that nice PvP item.
Anyway just remember once AD starts to flow everything else will follow.
My GWF was lvled up by going trough quests, with Domination only for daily.
My HR however was lvled only with Domination, and in the progress completing Domination tasks (battlefield artifact seal is one of rewards, which made it possible for me to obtain Vanguard artifact),and leaving me with more than enough glory to get some of the parts that i needed from T1 pvp set,and raven skull artifact. Since i dont plan to use that HR in pvp,but purely for PvE (that kind of build).
I tried both ways of lvling that game has to offer, both were fun,and short. But i am a new player still, not low,but new.
That is how this game feels for a new player. Thank you
What did you think of the Melee pve fights, particularly the regular hits (left/right mouse button)? Do you feel that there is enough "feedback" for the hits? Can you see it when your sword/dagger/axe hits the foe, or is it just because or the change in the foe's hp bar that you know that your weapon has delivered some damage?

Its the enchant system that is harsh on players, not the gear, gear is easy enough to obtain in this game.
Heck , a profound set is like the second best pve set for all classes ! If you have that you can run all the pve content you want.
Dont for a second think you need all 9/10's , perfect enchants and legendary artifacts to play pvp, the ELO works, sorta and most of the time you will be paired in your general grouping, unless of course you win some matches against higher elo folks to often , you may eventually get into a premade you cant compete against.
I would say entry level PVP right now is about 13kish, as power continue to creeps, I wouldn't recommend anyone not going in without 11.5k, that will have your T1 full set, and a couple boons and r/5/6s minimum.
That is just to decrease your entry pain honestly, nothing else about it.
If you get yourself to the 14-15k , profound sets, 6/7s enchants, 3 artifacts and a few normal weapon enchants and go for a lesser bark or something, you will be ok and compete on most teams without getting yelled at.
Beyond that level is a tremendous grind, that will take a long time to do for free or alot of money to go through zen/ad purchases. But what you are talking about is BiS folks that make up only 5-10% general range of pvp right now. There are many more of out there with toons in the 14-16k class that have fun still.
Ice Wind Dale offers players a full set + weapons corrupted and purified that everyone can obtain by doing daily quests. It's not the best, but right up there of course.
I think this is a great starting point for a lot of players.
I know of people that have attempted 40 - 50 Heroic Encounters and still do not the arms or main hand pieces. I would advise against Icewind Dale when it comes to building a 4-piece set.
PSA: You don't need to grind Spinward Rise for your Elemental artifact main hand if you have some AD lying around. You can craft it via the Tyranny of Dragon's campaign screen.

Agreed, its not a "bad" set but the drop rate is very low and seems to be hard to get at times. The weapon as well, probably second best set in game, but again, there are people with over 100 hes now and no MH or bracer. Sad.
Sadly , if you cannot get gear between set of modules for the drop of that module set, just not good design, plain and simple. The playerbase has asked for adjustments, so they did, THEY supposedly upped the tank/healing type points for them, while at the same time LOWERING the percentage of the drop. Egads , this is why you cant ask for stuff, bad things happen.

I only wanted to give some Feedback on how it felt to play as a new player here, what has been putting obstacles, what feels that it could be better, and what is good.
And i did that, even gave some suggestions on the way.
Also thank you everyone who gave guides and tips on how to go on,and opinions about my opinion, even to a guy who tried to troll a bit
Hope im not to late to help I know most the good suggestions are already mentioned
but I got a few that might help
(though they might have been mentioned and I missed them)
First of all your feedback is not wrong, and similar complaints show up in these forums often
this game has gotten more restrictive over time using PVP balance and combating spammers/cheaters as a reason
events have gotten more grindy and reward drop seem to have gone down.
the game is not dying, though sometimes you wonder if pwe wants it to.
most of my characters solo or duo with hubby. so I am playing from the pov of someone who dislikes raiding
though if you like raiding you'll haave an easier time with a guild or friends to help you gear that way.
you can make some good money (in addition to leadership and dailies)by selling low end junk on AH
its amazing how much people will pay for a nice stack vitrol or refugees. or the dyes/pets from a call to arms
after a few months, even low end enchantments it may not seem like much but it does add up.
note there is a promotion page on Neverwinter(gamepedia) wiki that can get you pets/titles/fashion
these are official promos put on by NW not gold sellers, there is also a thread in these forums for promos.
basic pvp can be lucrative IF you realize the goal is not to actually kill people... you can have a team that all die 50
times and still win. it is a capture the flag game. and glory can be used to get a good t1 gear(even if you lose)
that can make getting the raiding sets or running campaigns much easier. I look at PVP as I am giving other people
kill achievements..I am really really bad at it.
There are some really nice people in NW it has a nice rp community as well. I wish the game had more meeting/rp areas cause PE is often to crowded to really be much help.
Play the game as if it were a single player experience.
Only MMO out there that you have to play as a single player experience, Sad but true.

Here is the best advice in the game.
Join Legit. Win. Dont worry about the speed runners (saw a 17K + stone + perfect enchant (THAT you had to message what type, as they didnt want to stack same type for a DK run the other day, which Im sure they JUST had a runner for as well.. this is the crazy ridiculous , things that will drive new players away, this is why a channel like Legit is so fundamental in keeping a community in this game) this is the singular reason I still play this game.
The grind isnt that ridiculous for most PVE.
In pvp, basic knowledge + ok gear (profound, 7's , 3 artifacts at least blue, work on purple as you go) normal enchants. More then 80% of everyone you meet will be in that general range of competition, 10% will be a little better , 5% a little better more and 5% will be the BiS types with legendary artifacts 9/10s and perfect barkshields, vorpals. YOU do not meet up with these types in most matches.
But dont expect to get into a match and think that a 7k fresh 60 with no set bonuses, one green artifact and lvl 40 shirts is going to be of any use. Prepare a little, that simple. Run your dailies and boon out.
I think there is two ways to start PVP in a competitive mode.
1. Level to 60 then run GG till you get enough coins to get the GG set, exchange for grim set in the trade of blades.
or
2. Run Dom matches UP to lvl 60 for enough glory to exchange for full t1 set. Some t1s are extremely viable (IE GWF one, alot of them are not quite that good, but its at least a start and you can then skip all t1 runs for pve Armour if you want)
Then save for your profound, at the current Meta Profound is alot of times the second or third best pve armour behind the (AoWs, High Prophets, HVs) as it is, as the set bonus on alot of classes is pretty nice and better then some of the lower desired t2 sets anyways.
This is probably the best advice, like real talk. Comparing yourself to those who are geared or have spent more time in the game, as a beginner will be your biggest downfall.

If you mainly PvE, then R5's are fine - the highest enchant any of my characters have are R6's, and even then, it's only 1 or 2 of those. I also only have lesser weapon and armor enchants. The key is to play to your character's and playstyle's strengths. Maximize what each character can do well, and compensate for areas they are lacking. Don't focus on the mechanics of the game, and instead play in a manner which is fun for you, (while also allowing you to progress in some way).

This ^ is good advice.
By far not making me invest any money into something that slowly turns into a "2nd hand" game, cant imagine at the moment strongly playing this game,or investing in it in the future.
when reading zone, you have a stream of gold sellers. These are there because of the people supporting them instead of the game.
These have not helped the economy.
The BOP items are because of all the people who were;
I need this for an alt,
I need this for my companion,
I need this to sell,
when items were need or greed.
Get the Forums Enhancement Extension!
i choose to spend money while having always some ADs trying to have some profits with and it works.
I remember how fun it was being non lvl 60 last year and I think it is still is. But lvl 60 must be a big frustration for lvl 60. Especially for those who picked GF or TR as their class.
WTB Class Reroll please
Ice Wind Dale offers players a full set + weapons corrupted and purified that everyone can obtain by doing daily quests. It's not the best, but right up there of course.
I think this is a great starting point for a lot of players.
I know of people that have attempted 40 - 50 Heroic Encounters and still do not the arms or main hand pieces. I would advise against Icewind Dale when it comes to building a 4-piece set.
And i did that, even gave some suggestions on the way.
Also thank you everyone who gave guides and tips on how to go on,and opinions about my opinion, even to a guy who tried to troll a bit
This can be closed
but I got a few that might help
