I for one can understand the need for items with stats costing so much and for them being hard to get, I am fine with that. Its the bull HAMSTER cosmetic stuff that gets me, example ( I have a dwarf and I had to buy and axe and change my weapon to it and now every time I up my weapon it getting more and more costly), the great weapon fighter just keeps getting sword after sword, But how about an axe some times. I really don't think at levels below 60 the Items should really cost much if any to change, I have not played the dwarf in a while due to the changing the sword to an axe is so costly and I don't want a sword. I mean give me an option to have my gear look the way I want it at little or no cost, I found a cool looking set of armor but had to chunk it for the bland ugly armor with better stats. Cut the cost in half or have it were you have to have some one do it or say runs off the armor profession just do something other than the over price of transmuting. The dyes are cool and all but they also cost zen and have to do real money because the diamond exchange is a joke. I really only got back on this game due to being board and so much has changed from the time I played at the start. The enhancements and rune stones for the pets and upgrading them, why not just say it you changed it to make it harder to get them leveled as it stands right now it cost so much I will never have one over blue. I get the feeling that the game is just a money trap at times to sucker you in to spending money to get a head. Well I tell you at first I did but after coming back I will not, I will play each class till I level to 60. And by the way the journey to 60 is what I play the game for most, as the end game content in most of these online games is nothing more than a monster mash.
I seemed to have strayed off topic sorry I do that sometimes, Cosmetic is just that has not effect on stats or impacts the game in any other way other than the look. And you want the look to be right for the game to hold and keep people here and not going else were right. Then take off the restrictions you have imposed, 1) no cost for transmuting the look of gear, 2) let us unbind pets and mounts to trade to our other characters on our account 3) would it kill ya to put some of the dyes of the basic variety in a freaking market for gold or diamonds if you must. I can buy a horse for gold but not a bottle of black dye come on whats wrong here?
The only thing that's wrong with this awesome game is the lack of customization.
I've had 6 items waiting in my personal bank for MONTHS waiting to be transmuted but the 51K cost is outrageous, rather use that AD to gear up and buy other stuff.

I would love to see cosmetic items, specifically transmutes, applied to the character instead of the item, and accessible via a drop down menu, and changeable anytime you are out of combat, for free. What you *would* have to pay for is to have a new appearance added to said list of available ones, instead.

I love the way OP beautifully elaborated his viewpoint, but there is a reason for it - AD sinkhole.

I feel for ya. After several months I now make 150k per day to indulge here and there. Game is too unforgiving for new players. Especially for ones who can't play day and night.
I would like to see a drop down list for transmuting like someone above said. Let me buy cosmetic things (like the cloak I got from the 1 year anniversary event). and then I use them (make them consumable) and forever from now on I have access to make any neck I equip look like that cloak on this character. Make it cost 10K to 20K AD per item (preferably less) if you want, but if its only a one time fee I'd actually use the transmute feature. As it stands right now I would literally become afraid of getting upgrades if I started using it. That's not a good thing.

That is not how this game works, and it will not happen.
In Neverwinter, like in most other viable MMOs, there are two options of obtaining an item:
a) by spending real money; or b) by endless grinding. There is no reason why it shouldn't apply on transmuting.
Rift is now F2P and has multiple appearance slots, I would prefer appearance slots over the system that is there now and agree on the cost 51k AD cost being a sinkhole.
Surely they must make enough cash from people buy key bundles to all more customization.
As far as I'm aware, a number of MMOs have much more friendly customization. Sure, a number of games will charge a premium for Fashion items in the cash shop, but in-game appearance shifts are frequently more reasonable. TERA armor remodeling just costs gold, WoW transmog costs minor gold & doesn't eat the item, Guild Wars saves all the armor appearances you've owned in a menu and you can use transmute charges to apply them (can be gained during gameplay, or bought from cash shop for 25/$7.50), other games just have "appearance slots" you can stick stuff into like the Fashion items in NW. (And then, of course, there are the games where appearance and gear are totally separated, and costume changing is trivial - like Star Trek Online, or the old City of Heroes.)
All in all, a good many MMOs have more user-friendly systems. /shrug
(disclaimer: some of that was from google researching, not personal experience. Might be off a bit.
I did not mean to imply that every MMO works in the same way, but that almost every MMO has certain things of convenience which do not affect gameplay, but make people spend money on it. Mostly those are visual aspects of the game, like different mounts, colours, looks, etc.
You mentioned Guild Wars 2 for example. GW2 is a b2p, but it functions in very similar way to Neverwinter. You can buy new faces, items, etc. Those transmutes are actually dye packs that unlock certain colour for that character. Ones that drop in-game are mostly uninteresting. If I remember correctly, GW2 has their own type of lockboxes.
Some other MMOs, like ESO (which is p2p, btw), offer both standard version of the game, and a special version that unlocks another race, plus a mount. If a player buys a standard version of the game, he has to grind endlessly until he earns enough money to buy a mount. Now, let me just remind you that you can buy a mount in Neverwinter after only three skirmishes, and there is not a single thing that forces you to spend money.
WoW is not worth mentioning, since their developers, Blizzard, are very, very rich. Those two just can't be compared.
People take for granted what they have in Neverwinter. Personally, I would rather pay for looks, than for basic functionality.
Great idea! The lack of GF weapon customization is ridiculous... I see other classes with all kinds of gear choices, GF we all look the same why is that? We lack options!

if u r talking aba the free ones then yea its very limited not only for the gf but for all other classes the only free transmute cost 1.5mil which is kind of silly y not just spend 50k
there a lot of weapons u can use to transmute for the Gf available same with amour
Not really we have 3 spears, a couple axes that look the same and I think 3 maces. Then we have a tone of swords but very similar appearances. Shields we rock tons of shields, armor meh.... We only have a handful of nice looking armors.

Having options for things like maces, spears, axes, and different swords is a LOT more options than all of the other classes, like TR, DC, CW, etc., so I disagree with that statement.

It is true that equipment in this game is not as diverse as many of us would like it to be, however, if I understand correctly, this thread is about 51k transmuting fee, and not so much about diversity of items.

LOL - indeed! We digress.
Yes, the transmute fee is a bit too high to be an effective AD sink. 20k seems much more reasonable and feasible.

As a matter of fact ******bag I have been playing for 30 years various "stated with trade wars on a BBS" and have found that the games I like the most had an option to have cosmetic options with out a whole lot of hassle. Champions online, City of heroes, even DC online does this some what. There are others as lost count the point is in those the cost is not much or not at all hell in the one of them I forget which you just have to pick the item up and you have the style and can change any other item for that slot to that look. As for the points you stated in a) and b) i see it as fine for gaining stats but not just for a look for an item that drops in game but does not have the stats of one you have equipped. But hay go ahead and pay money for a cosmetic thing that has no use other than the aesthetic, because as soon as you find some thing with better stats you have to do it again and again well you see. I think if you are below 60 it should cost almost nothing Half what it is now. Sorry if I came across a bit harsh but you are not comprehending what I was saying, or maybe you don't care and have lots of free money. Ether way it was a suggestion as is you do something with that stick and trying to dislodge it from your self buddy

ironically, it would be a BETTER sink if it cost LESS, due to more people using it.
it doesnt matter how much AD it CAN remove, if relatively few ppl use it
