I noticed they took out the height scaler... so now any new characters that are created can never be as tall or as big as the older models (or vice-versa, cannot be shorter than any of the older short character models). I created a new character and tried to make it as tall/big as possible, but when I compared it in-game to an older model character, I was shorter/smaller.
Was this change intended, or is it a mistake on the devs part? Why would you take out the height slider?
*Also noticed they took out the bloodsplatter tattoo (for the face) they had earlier. And the model for the orc's faces have changed a 3rd time... I liked the 2nd set of orc faces better than this new third set.
I have no idea why the devs are doing this..

Only slider I know they took out for sure is the nail slider females used to have - which I do miss a little.
Height slider was always there since a long time ago - now it's gone. I'm thinking it's a mistake they made. I also noticed, the character creator is a little wonky/buggy in the appearance change chamber (on Deekin Street). I'm thinking the devs were in some kind of progress of changing the character creator, and didn't have time to polish or finish in time for Protector's Jubilee update.
Blood splatter face tattoo was added 1-2 months ago when they implemented the new face models, but ever since last maintenance, it has been taken out.
And I don't like how they took out the certain types of faces designated as 'fierce' or 'stern'... now all the orc faces look really dopey and like a harmless teddy bear.

For the record: I've created a new character this week and Like the new face model (female) a lot better than the old one. But I do agree: the body options are way too limited. I can;t create a shape I want in the arms and legs and belly-areas. They were too limited before, not they're even more limited.
Oh, well - it's not like anyone looks very closely at others' avatars. We make these only for ourselves so only we care about how out avatars look. Hence, it's all probably a moot point.
If there never was a height slider, then something must have changed... because I maxed out leg length and every other facet of body as much as I could, and ended up being shorter than the older models that were maxed out.
Good grief, you're right
Though I've been a liiiiittle annoyed with the overhauled character creator (since you can't alter the appearance of legacy characters without being forced to use the new faces), the renegade tattoos are something you SPECIFICALLY had to pay for and now they're gone, this actually makes me a little mad. I mean, I probably won't be rolling another Menzo renegade (I've got three already) but still!
The first change was from lo-resolution to high-resolution HEADS. It could be they've finally switched out the low resolution to high-resolution BODIES (which is often separate in 3D modeling) - and since it's a new body, the new body may be smaller that previous. I'm sure Cryptic isn't changing this stuff willy-nilly. WotC is releasing new specs on character designs visually (Tyranny of Dragons is a bug deal, folks) and it's possible Cryptic are not only upgrading avatar mad els, but also conforming to the new spec fro WotC.
I'm not saying I agree with it (no one likes change) - I'm just stating this is likely the cause and reason.

Why so tall for humans and half-orcs? Given the obvious real world comparisons, several book series character descriptions feature NPC's near or in excess of 7' in height. Capt. Dunfield in Helm's Hold seems exceptionally tall for a human, yet my maxed height character is still easily a forehead shorter. If NPC's can be of such height, why not player characters?

Are the new modifications looking back to how they originally look? Perhaps the original face options are back?
I'd want the original faces back.
Personally speaking and in the name of the friend I'm playing, we dislike the new faces, both of dwarves and elves (we haven't checked the other races). This is not saying the new models aren't quality models -- they are indeed --, but they look too realistic, too mundane (in comparison); devs and artists here at NWO have removed most of the innocence, magic and fantasy of the elven faces, I mean, it's sad to see that I never will be able to do a similar character in NWO, a character I like --such as the ones I've been playing for now--, with these "modern" models.
So I'd love to have at least the option to pick from the earlier faces when creating a new character, in addition to the new models. Some people says "nobody likes changes"; now, I like changes when they improve things. And I don't think that having both sets of models/faces available at character creation will cause "analysis paralysis" to nobody. A simple, small "More" button at the preset stage would suffice.
Also, it's worth to note that it's not the aforementioned height slider (I'm not sure if it was there before or not...) and the face models what has changed regarding NWO characters; right now, the new ones lack of most movements and gestures the earlier set of characters had, making them a bit lifelike, not just like plastic toons: right now, they are almost completely static (yes, they breathe... a bit), which means a strong contrast with the earlier ones which slightly changed facial gestures and bodily postures.
For what is worth.
