New player: To HR or Not HR

Hello Everyone,

New player here. I am looking to make a class that brings enough utility and dps to be needed during endgame. I normally play tank roles but I had my dreams dashed after learning that this game has no need for tanks. I am not going to beat my head against the wall playing a GF so I decided to pick up a HR, CW or TR. From what I have read CWs are the most "useful" and popular? TRs have the highest single target damage output of all classes and HR's are somewhere in the middle?

I mainly play PvE and I am feeling compelled to play HR to have best of both worlds but is that true? Are HR's needed in parties? Do they bring enough utility and damage for groups later on or am I losing out on too much trying to have best of both worlds?

Best single target dps comes from GWF, and they can also do lots of AoE and competes with CW. And yeah, they tank. HR is a really fun class to play and can do nice dps, they aren't hated in parties but neither needed. If you want utility and damage but don't want a CW, go for the GWF.
    DC Divine Oracle Faithful
HR Stormwarden Trapper / Stormwarden Combat
    GWF Swordmaster Destroyer
CW Master of Flame Thaumaturge / Spellstorm Oppressor
    TR Master Infiltrator Executioner
    SW Soulbinder Fury

Play the game how "YOU" want to play it... The clues in there somewhere. ;)

Not HR. Try GWF or CW, they suit better your definition. HR is not "needed" anywhere in endgame dungeons.

I second CW. They are an absolute blast to play in PVE and can blow **** up. My CW, which is not very highly geared (12kish gear score), can solo heroic encounters in Icewind Dale easily, and dungeons can be really fun to mow through. I also really enjoyed the way their encounters work with their extra slot (Mastery) which gives extra functionality and can really alter playability. Encounters are all useful in different spots and there really aren't any encounters which are completely useless and never used.

I really love the CW but in PVP they have a serious uphill battle, hence the switch.

GWF I also played to 60 but found a little monotonous. They are strong in PVP and PVE, but I almost never reslotted encounters or class features and found a lot of the encounters more or less a waste of space. If you have no interest in PVP I would definitely argue for CW.

    question.
how come ur new player with that join date?

I joined during the open beta but never picked it up, (FFXIV stole my soul for a bit.) I saw the game recently and wanted to give it another shot. I have no experience with the game since open beta.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I just realized that I can get another free character slot from the first buyer item on the zen store. I've already decided on choosing a Devoted Cleric to mess around with. So for the other 2 it's a toss up between a GWF and a CW. I think I will go Great Weapon Fighter and Hunter Ranger. GWF to tickle my tanking itch and HR because it just seems like a cool class to play with. I will mess around with all three and decide which I will take to 60 first.

If you want to PVE, you're going to want a CW or GWF.
My Harem: Dawn HR, Erin CW, Piper TR, Zoe GWF

CWF is easy mode. Take it if you want that grind. Hr is challenging but awesome whan done right. It really depends on what you are looking for.

I found 1-59 a breeze with the HR while the GWF was slow and boring. Had to make a new GWF cause my sentinel is doing half the damage that my combat HR does for shame.

Pre-60 is like a day or two. HRs are very easy to level though that much is true.
