Most tank type companions are quite good. If you're low on budget, the Man at arms that you get for free is good at the start. Towards the end, around level 50 onwards, you may find the Cleric companion to be better, as the man at arms may die quite fast.

Otherwise any Epic quality level tanks will be good enough.

Have the gear and skills, but lack the friends to play with? Come and apply for Essence of Aggression. We have been here and strong since beta. (Immature, rude, and arrogant people will not be accepted)

Cleric till you get enough AD for Stone.

For me, it is Man-at-arms since he gets much more benefits from gears than cleric (cleric's heal is not affected by gears). Put some cheap lvl 60 blue gears on him and he can tank everything from lvl 1 till 30s, including low lvl dungeon bosses, after that he will face a down fall but still not too bad.
You say 4v5 is impossible? Cool story bro.

Another vote for man at arms. Get a stone as soon as ya can... I have many chars and have used all the free pets. None of them suck for leveling. (They ALL suck for endgame.) But as a ranger you definitely want the bad guys shooting your pal instead of shooting you. =D

Do every Call to Arms as many times as it takes to get whatever pet it's got. Then use it if it fits or sell it and buy something that does. The upcoming one awards the Armored Orc Wolf. He gives you 100 free Crit points. He's cool looking, but otherwise sucks as a companion, because he forgets what he's doing. So get him, make him active but don't bother summoning him, unless you want to rank him to 20. That might matter.. some day. XD

Casting my vote for Hunting Hawk. Mine has been spectacular from Lv5 all the way to Lv60 and continues to be helpful. He does decent damage to small trash, has been known to hold some aggro and can (when fitted properly) take a few hits. I'll be upgrading him to purple sooner or later.

As for the upcoming CTA, the news post from PWE seems to indicate a totally different companion that isn't an Orc Wolf.

I used both the cleric and the man-at-arms and found that for a group of mobs it was faster with the cleric as her insane aggro means that enemies tend to cluster around her which tends to enable me to split-shot them down. For a single tough (non-boss) enemy the Men-at-Arms is better, but on later bosses the cleric is superior because it tends to stay alive longer and keep your health topped up.

Although if you really want to level up easily just get the scaling epic weapons.

Used man at arms at first. Then got a mimic that does the same job only better. I you ninja-bid you can get one off of the AH for a fairly reasonable price. Leveled it will continue to tank for you in all the L60 solo content.

I chose the wizard as he helped me to control adds I was aggroing with split shot all aoe slow attacks and he tries to stay away from mobs but dies quickly enough so that he doesnt drag them off.

ha nice the armored orc wolf again I'll be happy to.

    oh it isn't? sounds interesting.

I re-read the Orc Assault news. I don't see anything suggesting a different pet. If referring to the image, the image is supposedly about the shield, which I've heard is the GF offhand transmute that wasn't available the first time.

I'm willing to accept that the image may be about the shield and not a whole new companion. The whole thing was somewhat vague and I wasn't actually here for the first Orc Assault.

You will get a quest for a free "white" companion at lvl 16.

Other than that, you can buy others companions in Grand Emporium in Protector's Enclave for gold, glory (pvp currency), bars (lockbox currency), astral diamonds, etc.

Also, you can get them as rewards from some dungeons, events, and cashshop.

You can put any level gears on your companions, same with runestones.

gear, the plural of gear is gear unless you are talking about the inside of a watch.
