What? They give you that initial five, don't require five. From what i've seen, all professions start with hiring a worker, then after you have one, gathering and using things.
it says i have the necessary requirements but when i go to continue i have no experience...on the left hand side where it lists the different profession all of them say i have 0 experience

Like tfangel said. They give you exp, not require it. The 5 you're seeing is how much exp the job will get you.
It should give you experience once you complete the task. Say, gathering wool, after you put a tailor in, and the time goes by, you then click claim reward, that's when it gives you the experience.
Sorry if i'm not too helpful, i've been up too long and not the best teacher.
i don't know...it would never let me start the task...just tried again and started right up...sorry for bugging ppl on something so stupid...thx for the help
My experience was that all the professions start off with giving you things to do, and upon completion give you the experience earned. Never saw one that gave you 5 pts. The only exception to this is alchemy. The tasks given come with no experience and I have not been able to get past lvl 1! Does anyone know why? It keeps saying I need something called basic alchemy knowledge but have no idea how to get this.

Tons of threads about alchemy will explain in detail. You should also check the wiki . I quit alchemy at level 6 because it was too much setting new tasks every 20 minutes.. but basically, you make potions i think, and when you have made the components you are offered the task to get basic alc experience or something..
Turn off the filters that say hide above my level and hide unmet requirements, it will explain itself.

Yeah, alchemy is unique in that you gain zero experience for any of the tasks EXCEPT one.
The one task that does award exp gives you exactly enough experience to go right up to the next level.
To get the requirements for that task (a few copies of alchemical knowledge) you need to do the task that creates experimental potions. This task will ALWAYS award an unstable potion, and may ALSO award basic alchemical knowledge. In essence (roleplay-wise), you're effectively boiling random HAMSTER together in the hope you'll learn something. And sometimes you do.
Unstable potions are kinda fun, producing a random effect each time (sometimes a DoT, something a HoT, sometimes they make you tiny, sometimes they turn you into a bear), but mostly you'll be making loads of them in the hope of acquiring basic alchemical knowledge.
Once you've done enough to get your alchemical knowledge, you do the exp task, go up a level, and do the NEXT tier of experimental stuff. It takes ages.
