Controll Wizard advice

Hi everyone

If there is a post about this already, or a guide somewhere that I am missing I apologize in advance. My searching was only coming up with out dated stuff and i wasn't sure if it was still par for the course.

I'm new to the game and used to playing support type roles characters, so of course I fell in love with the control Wizard and started up. I just hit 60 yesterday and ran gauntlgrym for the first time today and it's whats made me want to post here looking for some advice.

I want to play the best group support the control Wizard offers. I thought that would be a lot of cc based, but now I'm not sure if that is the case, and I'm not sure if im doing it wrong.

I chose the flame tree, because I'm using chill alot I thought rimfire could be useful, but now I'm just not sure. I think my damage was a little bit lower than it should be, I know I just hit 60 and my gear is not where it should be at 10.2k gear score, but even still I feel like im lacking something.

So basically what I'm looking for is some advice or perhaps a link to an up to date guide that covers what I would like, and I'm also curious if the flame tree is viable. I chose flame tree and Oppressor as my feats.

Any advice you can give would be much appreciated, I want to play to the best of my abilities, and offer as much as I can to the group, and I don't think i'm there yet, so thanks in advance.

tl;dr: I'm looking for the best grouping build for the Control Wizard. Thank you in advance.

You know... its so hard to address something like this.

The reality of the matter is, different parties require different types of things. I can honestly say build doesn't mean as much as you'd think. What it really will come down to is how well you can adapt to the situation and how aggressive you are. You could... and most likely will be, the key damager on the trash mobs up to the boss. Your AoE damage spells are also control spells. (Shards, Steal time). You are better at it than anyone else. No one is going to be able to come close in equal gear to your damage output when AoEing.

Then the screwy part is, the upper level dungeons about half the time you're going to have to end up being a single target damager because for whatever reason, about half the time your party DDs are not very well geared or built. Its nice when you have those, but you don't always... and sometimes the tactics they want to run, are the Tank on the Adds and everyone else damaging the main boss mob. So CC goes out the window in a hurry.

The flipped side is... you could end up in a party with a really tentative tank, who won't run in and grab the mob's agro and expects someone else to do it. So you're going to spend half that time running from mobs while your timers reset OR you're going to have to leave all those mobs on their collective rear ends or stunned repeatedly... or dead very very fast. And You'll be teleporting around like Nightcrawler to do it.

I'd like to say you can be just a Crowd Control Wizard, and while I'm sure when the stars align that's true.

But reality generally means you're going to be Crowd Control, AoE Mob Damager, and Single Target Damager all rolled into one little package. Like it or not.

Me I've just gotten to the point where I realized crowd control is really not our best use.

What we're really good at... is gathering all the mobs in one spot, and then AoEing the HAMSTER out of them and watching them drop like flies while teleporting around stunning and slowing everything so it doesn't have enough time to kill us.

Just... don't expect to stand there in one spot, hanging back in the back line mages pressing buttons and keeping mobs bedazzled... unless the stars align for you.

Thanks alot for this I appreciate it. Can you give me an idea of where I should spend my feats? I don't think I'm putting out the damage that I should be, I was quite low on the boards. I know I'm not geared but even still I think I may not be utilizing the right skills/trees. Is the Oppressor tree not the way to go? I'm probablly going to have to buy a retraiting tolken, which is fine, just looking for a little more knowledge of what I should run skill wise and feat wise.

Until you get a grasp of the class mechanics, I would copy a build from these very subforums. Both stox's and grimah's guides are excellent - start from there.

After you are familiar with CW capabilities, you can respec again to suit your playstyle better.

Persephone is basically right. You're not going to go wrong with any of those builds.
What you're not going to know is that many of the builds here are slow burn builds, they're can't go wrong type of builds. But they're the slow kill kinds.

But if you're wondering... here's the fastest way to clear groups of mobs on the way to the Boss...

    1. Singularity...

While the mobs are about to drop from the big ball at the top... move in and start casting...

    2. Steal Time

You will now have the mobs in a big bunch and helpless.

    3. Sudden Storm

This will rip through the entire pack, I generally on a crit do over 100,000 total damage or more to that group of Mobs.

Last but not least... then while you're standing right in front of them.

    4. Shards of Avalanche

It will not miss and it will go off like a cannon, likely finishing off all the weaker mobs and leaving only a couple of strong ones left, and those will be knocked prone, which is long enough for you to teleport back to the back line again.

This entire series of moves will happen in seconds. You will have just racked up a TON of damage, and the mobs will be stunned and helpless enough for the rest of the party to clean up very fast. And when you have multiple CWs, taking turns doing this? You clear the entire field in a heartbeat.

That... is how you really burn down trash mobs fast. That's the real way to do it, and there's not even enough time left to bother with Crowd Control.

It has little to nothing to do with anything you've seen prior, or that you'll even hear on these boards.
