It's costly because it has practically the most useful 4 pc set bonus available right now for GWF's. AoW is a solid set that provides you with offensive buffs that the other T2 sets can't possibly provide, and this can be easily maintained too.
thats good but I heard there will be a new set coming out so the old ones going to be outdated
This isn't entirely true. There will be new PVP sets, but none of em would be remotely close to the buffs AoW can provide. Not even sure how the devs designed the PVP sets. Because all other classes (TR, DC, CW, GF) have sets that is directly related to their class mechanics (Stealth, Divinity, Mastery, Guard). The GWF and the HR are the only ones with sets that does not have anything to do with their class mechanics which is what's making them undesirable. If T2 PVP Set had an improved set effect like the one we see from T1 PVP Set, I guess AoW would have some competition. But the 4 pc of the T2 PVP set and the upcoming T2.5 PVP set is just terrible. The Deflect Boost is nice, but that's all there is to it.
And like Kolbe mentioned, Fabled Iliyanbruen can also be good but the 4pc is unreliable. Though the determination gain and damage bonus is pretty neat, AoW's 4pc can have 100% uptime as long as you keep hitting your foes with Encounters before the stacks drop, while Fabled will only activate 3x per minute.

I'm not totally sure it's all it's cracked up to be myself. It's hard to say though, because I upgraded all my rank 5's to rank 7's at once and replaced a ton of recovery with power. Also increase my crit and upgraded to GrVorpal at the same time. (The course of a couple weeks.)
Went from a 2/2 set, to AoW. Cant remember the other pair, one was AoW, the other was something that gave 1600 HP (wanna say Vigilant Warlord or something like that.) The first thing I noticed, is I suddenly got squishy. I changed my accessories to add a little deflect, a little life steal and a lot of defense and that's not so bad now. I wish I had held on to the parts I took off so I could test.. But the first big change I did was going full AoW and for a few days.... I was really disappointed and like 'what have I done?'
After the other changes, which also included the best four green pets for me, to go with my allure stone, I am ok. Probably at least 75% more effective than I was before.
Hey, it's just my own observation, and probably of no use to anyone. Long run, I think I'm glad I went with it, but since I cant test, I may never know.
(I've never seen any evidence of the 4/4 bonus working. Not saying it isn't. GWF's are very busy, fast moving critters. I may have been too busy reaping wheat to note it, but I've not seen anything that said 'whoa, your set bonus must have kicked in!')
My power is just short of 7K, Crit about 4.3K, AP, 2.1K, Rec 2.2K, HP 27K, Def 2.8, Def 1.4, LS 975. This is standing in the middle of nowhere, nothing proc'd. (Not saying that's impressive, I know it isn't. Just a point of reference, cuz I'd love someone to tell me something to do to improve.)
Rhyon Cawdorian GWF | Opa Loka TR | Cormac Argentus III DC | Annika Thornblade GF | Aerys Skydark HR | Bartin Findlor TR | Aellia Baalthrall CW | Lucan Hawkmoon CW | Opa Brahk GWF | Korzbyrk DC | Den Kruk GWF | Jherek Skarsin CW |
Roland Mac Sheonin GF | Tarron Direheart SW |
AoW is the most popular set because aow allows for highest dps. The class needs to squeeze a lot of dps in order to draw some aggro and because dps is the main thing gwf offers, so aow is usually the armor to use. I don't consider the 4/4 set bonus to be particularly powerful but it is the highest dps armor set for gwf.
Vigilant warlord has alright damage, while providing quite more defensive stats than AoW and has a pretty good and a bit easier to proc set bonus, but again, a gwf needs to squeeze out dps to fulfill their role in pve and vigilant warlord isn't the answer. But vigilant warlord is great for lazy soloing, hard bosses like dracolich, and pvp. Only crazy people take AoW to pvp.

I do. And it sucks big time :-D However it's fun when people kill you within one rotation and be like wtf I top this off with 0 Regen and 0 Pots for the ultimate paper cannon (even dies to wet noodles ;-P). Can't wait til I finally get the 24k glory.

The Avatar of War set is 100% all that it's cracked up to be... With the ability to keep it up almost 100% of the time in PvE receiving 1350 Power/Recovery (Total of 2700 points in equivalent Gear Score) equates out to 9 Rank 10 Enchantments. That's pretty dang snazzy!

Just saying I hadn't witnessed it in numbers or buff icons. You know how ya see the text floaters like a TR sees Dazzling Blades fly across the screen. Also, when I first finished the set, that bonus would have just put me at the low end of desirable power range. That, combined with the loss of defensive strength (HP etc,) introduced doubt. I am very happy where he is now, so I am sure you are right. I didn't follow your guides to build, but I did take some of the advice I found there, and getting the AoW set completed was part of it.
I'm definitely going to keep an eye on it for 1st hand confirmation of those numbers. Might get me killed once... heh

Blow some encounters. Press C. Notice boost in stats from AoW bonus.
AoW is THE only set for PvE GWF, if you run smth else(not counting ppl who just havent gotten one) you are weighting down your party.
and ah is only for ppl with too much $ who are too lazy to farm it, run some DD and get it yourself

It's only good because the set bonus is bugged and you get 1 stack per target hit. If it wasn't you'd have to spam some encounter with <10s cooldown every time it's available to maintain it.
I actually observed the bonus buff (although not extensively). It seem that the buff icon will show 3 stacks when u hit 3+ mobs but u will not receive the bonus. You will have to actually use the encounter power 3 times to receive the bonus buff. I maybe wrong in this but i try it multiple times and it will only gives the bonus after 3 encounter use.
p/s: i was wrong...

Actually, if you get 3 stacks with first attack you only need one more hit to get the bonus.

SENT IV GWF - PVP
Because the price isn't fixed, that's why it makes no sense, players decide the price.
it does make sense, try farming spellplague for 100+ runs and you still wont see an AoW helm
There are people who play PvE in this game, just saying... lol
Once I hit 60 -_-

Oxnard, I got mine the very first time I tried for it after deciding I wanted it. I'm sure that's rare, but it does happen.. so don't be disheartened.
