This bug halts chain progress and kills grouping. I organize guild runs, and I'm usually the healer. If I get locked out of the quest, or the whole adventure area, none of us enjoy your game that day. And we complain about the poor quality on social media. Everybody loses.
So please, make fixing this a priority. I'd be happy to run a special debug version of the client when a lockup happens so I can get you more details. It's 100% repeatable once it happens. It won't "fix" itself until the next Thursday patch.
The computer continues to run fine - network traffic is negligible, other programs can use the network without trouble, I have plenty of free memory (7GB out of 16 GB used), and CPU cycles (GameClient uses 26%, or 3 of the 8 cores at about 2/3 utilization each).
If I kill the process, I can log in and use any other character, but the character that got stuck will stick again if I switch to it. Sometimes the client will offer to take me back to Protectors Enclave, which will work, but if I try to go back to the quest chain the character will immediately stick again.
Do you have the patch on demand option checked in the patcher per chance?
This is your problem , on the patcher log in screen look in the top right and open the options menu and disable on demand patching then close the client and reopen it , in all likelihood you will then get a large patch but after that the only time you will ever have to patch again is on Thursdays after maintenance unless there is some emergency that they need to patch but that rarely happens.
Thank you both, switching the on demand patching off fixed my character and I can get back into IceSpire!
For anyone else reading this, the initial download after turning off the on-demand patching was several hours (maybe a Friday night wasn't the best time to begin), but it was TOTALLY worth it!
