It would be nice to play equally geared and/or skilled opponents. I think the amount of leaves would drastically decrease if the matches were closer. I faced a team today where the GWF (inb4 "get gud/geared skrub!1") literally 1v5'd our team and had a similar issue with a Hunter. I'm not top level but this has happened to both my 24 TR and 37 HR due to heavily enchanted alts of high level players. I didn't leave but when teammates left I didn't really get mad. When the balance of teams is heavily skewed, it's not really fun--especially if the team doesn't let you get any points (aka here's your 10 glory for getting 325 points) so being there isn't an absolute waste of time.
I really enjoy other games with a ranking system in pvp usually the people who dominate and the people who are only average, or below, get grouped together; examples off the top of my head are WoW, LoL, and Rift; Dota 2 has similar matchmaking of multiple tiers, even if there's no actual ranked mode. If a ranking system is implemented at a later date, initially group people by gearscore and then the ranked algorithm should start grouping people by win-loss ratio. That way, someone with drastically lower gearscore could still play well-geared players if they have an extreme amount of skill.
They're currently working on a Elo system it's just not on preview yet as they had to remove it from the patch at the last minute because of a QA problem.
It won't solve the twinking problem for low-level PVP because these players generally play so few matches anyway (compared to Level 60) before they outlevel the bracket. So the ranking system will have a hard time discriminating between the "pro" and the "amateur" players based on number of matches played. Thus the chance that a team with gear acquired solely through PVE play being roflstomped by a twinked-out team with Level 30's in Greater Vorpals and Plaguefires will continue.

Once the Mulhorands go, this will not be an issue anymore. As the lockboxes will be stopping the supply should slowly dwindle to nothingness.
Unless, of course, the foolishness is repeated with the new boxes.

I think it would be good only if the rewards were greater (more glory) for people on the higher levels.
In fact, what is going to happen is that PvP matches will last much longer after the Elo is implemented and people will have no incentive to spend time/money getting better gear simply because after a couple of easier matches due to better gear they will face stronger opponents again.

This. I appreciate a good ELO system, but when people are evenly matched and we spend 30 minutes in a PVP match just to get 500 glory... Not cool.

Well rewards should be consistent to the points gained, a 30 min match usually gives you a tons of points. Anyway, I do PvP because I like it - 30 min match that keeps you on your toes is cool - the matches I most enjoyed have always been those finishing 1000 - 975 or stuff like that.
this pvp is not worthy, a 12 year old could have done it better.
I find that hard to believe, since the PvP system and class balance is actually quite nicely arranged, contrary to what scrubs whine about all the time. The lack of desertion penalties, no propoer matching system, too much effect of gear on gameplay are a serious problem, but two of those three are getting fixed, not to mention none of those are in direct relation with the baisc PvP system anyhow.
Stop making excuses. Be a man. If you know something to be broken, stop using it. Otherwise, you've got no right to be speaking of 'balance.'
I think it is. I am sick of playing with newbies and I mean it...
If my team are all 8k gs plz make other team around 8k gs as well. When they have a 15k GWF with all the bling it is just stupid. Not to mention bumping into a premade when u are in a bad pug... all you do is show your head then get instant focused and die. No fun, No balance and no point.
I think this is a fantastic idea and I can't wait for it to be implemented. I roll with a guild premade 90% of the time, and the best possible thing that can happen in a match is to be against a similarly organized and strong team. Yes the matches can take 30-40 minutes but it is fun. Knowing that we will regularly face strong pugs and probably usually premades is a real treat. The only problem I see is there will be mix-match teams of good players vs well organized premades. I really wish there was more to facilitate regular premades so people can be used to playing with each other because teamwork is crucial and being in a team that acts as a true unit wins matches. A league/ladder would be a great idea.

I'd assume it would be based off of win/loss ratio
