Well first let me state that I am not an expert on companions, they are some of my favorite aspects of the game, a neat little pal to play the game with that doesn't beg for loot or behave like a ******bag. I have a lot of companions, and I play in themes. What does that mean playing in themes? Well if it sounds like a companion that would accompany a certain class, I usually put it with that class..That being said, some of the passive bonus' on some companions are goofy and does not fit.
1. Dread warrior (gotten to level 18)
What I expected: A very big, visible, angry frankenstein like monster that could hold agro and do decent dps. I stuck him with my sun elf control wizard. Zombie+big thing= something that a wizard would use for muscle.
What I got: An invincible angry man that trots around the battlefield and everyone ignores. He punches, he swats, he slams, yet all eyes are constantly on my wizard. I figured again, someone so huge and visible would clearly draw agro from most mobs..but instead they treat him like a pixie. His passive, enrages me and makes me draw more agro..which I have dubbed "Giant elf dad" being as how my character grows taller then the dread warrior.
Changes I would make: Make his passive decrease threat to player by 10%, increase his agro, keep him the same other then that. 3.7 out of 5 pet score from me.
2. Feywild Panther (gotten to rank 26, paid to make epic (huge regrets))
What I expected- OH cool! A fey panther for my elven ranger! Now I can play a bit like drizzt without being a complete rip off! A lithe, fast, quick, striker that can take out smaller mobs and knock down big ones without being completely overbearing
What I got- My feywild panther must be on fey mushrooms, he spends most of his time trotting around lazy and not doing jack ****. His attacks are non-existant being as how he is paired with a constantly dodging ranger and has no concept of "attack and move" His AI is HAMSTER..if a mob is engaged with me, he stares blankly at it while I fight it, sometimes managing a swipe after the initial knock down attack (if im setting perfectly still and getting my face smashed) other then that he just sort of walks around like eye candy and does not help at all. His passive ability is...I dont have a clue, because it is pretty bad.
Changes I would make: Make him more agile, give his AI priority (attack weak mobs first, then mid, then boss) make him able to attack on the run in a "pounce" attack that does knock down.
Rating: 1 out of 5 avoid.
3. Cave bear (gotten to level 30)
what I expected- Bears are big, strong, slow beasts that lumber along until angry, and then charge and swat when aroused. Sound familiar? Sound like something like...a guardian pet or tank pet? BOY HOWDY so did I, I stuck him on my ranger (I thought yeah, bear plus ranger is perfect!) Makes sense right? That is actually a companion in DnD a ranger can pick! And in DnD the bear is excellent for putting between you and an angry mob. Plus "Cave bear" struck me as "flipping huge bear at max level"
What i got- The fey panther, but brown, slower, and less cool. The cave bear goes from a size of "Cub" to a size of "well fed cub" also.
Changes I would make- Make him hold agro, tank more damage, and increase his size a bit. make him bigger then a horse at least, its a cave bear after all.
Rating: 2.5 out of 5, not a priority to have and doesn't work well.
This forum set up is absolutely horrible, I cant even figure out how to get my knight of the feywild title.

If you thought the Dread Warrior was meant to pull aggro, I suggest really looking at the tooltip for companions before you buy them in the Zen store in the future. Everything about this screamed "aid for a tank" and not "I'm a tank", except for the visual appearance which probably should have gone another route. In the future, I hope they add more companions like this, which is designed around helping specific types of classes. With mod 2, most of the active bonuses for tank type companions helped tank type players as opposed to helping non-tanks. It is nice to see a support style companion that helps tanks and has an active bonus to match.

Frankly the appearance sold the companion more then anything else.
What I am displeased about was the "looks like an M1 abrams, performs like a VW bug"

well buying things on appearance and then being angry when they dont perform a role they were not meant to perform in the first place isnt exactly fair on the object in question.
its like buying a cushion in the shape on a house and then being angry when you cant reside in it
althought i do understand your troubles, the companions in this game are dumber than cow faeces, most of them anyway

Actually its more like buying a house, seeing a picture of a house, doing a walk around of the house, and then after you buy it you go inside and see that its made entirely of particle board spray painted to look like a house.

let's be frank... these are companions that aren't designed to be a fraction as powerful as your character is. they're just supposed to play a minor support role, particularly more while leveling. at their current incarnation, while you're continuing to acquire power boosters like boons at level 60, the best you can do is up your rune levels and the enchants in your companions gear. whether this will ever change, we don't know. but to coin a more appropriate analogy, companions are more like an energy drink rather than a house. although i will say that some people (myself included) enjoy the aesthetics that come with some of these companions, if you're expecting miracles you will most certainly be disappointed.

What I got-
Was a cat that takes orders as well as any other cat, ie. it doesn't give a **** about anything you may want it to do. Quite realistic

And also much like any other cat, I rather put it outside and get a dog.
