I didnt experience it myself but it sounds awsome:

Phase 2 – The Invasion
Begins: June 17, 2013 at 12am PDT (When is that in your time zone?)
Ends: June 20, 2013 at 9am PDT (When is that in your time zone?)
Details: Protector’s Enclave will be under attack! How can you help protect the city of Neverwinter? During the End of Open Beta Event, there are 5 locations around Protector’s Enclave that will be vulnerable to attack. Look for a message indicating where the portal appeared and help fend off groups of enemies threatening the city. Also, there will be smaller groups patrolling the city, from the portals to the market area, looking to terrorizing the denizens of Neverwinter – they need your help! When the Invasion event is running, you will receive an open mission for killing enemies while in Protector's Enclave. Portals will spawn at the top and bottom of the hour and stay open for 5 minutes then close.

Phase 3 – The Finale
Begins: June 19, 2013 at 12am PDT (When is that in your time zone?)
Ends: June 20, 2013 at 9am PDT (When is that in your time zone?)
Details: The invasion is not over by any means, adventurers. Even more dangerous and deadly creatures await their opportunity to destroy the city of Neverwinter. During the final phase of the Invasion, the Finale, terrifying Unhallowed Wights will make their presence known throughout the Forgotten Realms by coming through the portals and patrolling the city! These waves will be spaced 5 minutes apart.

However, if you successfully help keep Neverwinter safe during Phase 2 and Phase 3, you may be rewarded with some amazing items which are unique to this event! Throughout the event at the end of each portal wave, you will receive a bag of bones if you helped kill anything during the portal invasion. Collected bones can be taken to Makos' Apprentice in Protector's Enclave, by the market plaza, and exchanged for rewards. During the event, a Scroll of Deathly Aura may drop providing a minor buff to your character while granting a fire aura. Also, new unique enchantments may drop during this event which will provides 2 stat bonuses instead of 1. And, a new unique companion may drop during the last two phases. Which will it be? Join us during the End of Open Beta Event starting on June 14, 2013 to find out.

Yes to more creative events that aren't sit at a spot and spam f.

No to combat events in city zones.

Here's the problem with them in every single mmo that does them.

City zones are suppossed to be safe zones. Do your trades, hit the vendors, etc. They're boring area's but needed. The other problem is that unless you make the mobs all level 1 ish, You hit new players and new characters with major inconviences by making them have to run away or die from mobs way above their level, this opens up griefing and other problems. Lastly these events in every game I've seen cause lag.

I will agree City zones are to provide security. then again that was "Valindra's" first big push.

Yes it was laggy, yes, you could just sit there and spam away.

It was an incredible display of "Valindra's" power and vanity. I don't remember the multiple types of first ever seen Mobs being untouchable by almost any level that wanted to join in.

I was a lowly TR at the event, I got my share of kills. Didn't see all the random rewards mentioned though I did pick up about a dozen "Savage" enchantments ranked 2-4. That was the first time those had dropped.

I am reminded everyday I took part in the event, along with the name of my alter-ego, I also wear the character Title, "Protector of the Enclave" for killing 20+ of those Valindra chose to do the City harm. The banner gives me no benefits other than I know how long I've been here.

Look around the next campfire, see how many can wear that character Title. it is most likely the second oldest of the "had to have been there events" like "Caturday"
    "One Riot, One Ranger" **

    Except for a few facts...
    1. The "invasion" points were absolutely no where near any trades/vendors/etc, they were in remote, out of the way, off the beaten path corners and cul-de-sacs.
    2. Characters involved in the encounters were scaled up to the level and didn't have to run away at all -- just like CTA events - everybody/every-level can participate.
    3. Of course it caused lag (in this case) because it was meant to get as many people as possible into a single instance for stress testing at the end of beta. ...and the lag paled by comparison to the HR bug caused lag at the winter festival.

I enjoyed the End of Open Beta event, and wouldn't mind seeing a new version in the future.

it was fun they could do another type of event like this but instead of PE pick a new zone or even make a new zone / city for the event to help cut down on the lag due to all the people in "town" that were not involved with the event for what ever reason. Having it end with a giant "Raid" type monster similar to "Defiance" would be an awesome way to end it as well compared to just speeding up the cycle and changing the mobs slightly as they did last time. (by limiting exactly how many people could be in the zone they could scale this final monster fight I'm sure to make it fun and challenging for all)
    cheers

Although it was AMAZING fun the last time it was just a CW's wet dream, spam attack portal opening for however many days straight it was.

Some cool item drops an such but the story needs to have a dash of continuity so any further events need to fall in line with it all

Oh sweet baby jesus, the invasion event.... Now THAT was fun. Once they fixed the lag from the closing of the portals that was so crippling, I'm pretty sure my PC would of taken out a pistol and shot itself, the event was amazing xD A truly spectacular way to end the Open Beta and I would love to see it again, just so those who weren't around for it could get a chance to see it for themselves.

I wouldnt mind seeing this as an anniversary event. It was very fun to fight waves of undead with everyone on PE. The rewards were great and like stated before, after the memory leak from the portals closing was fixed, the lag was nowhere near the HR seismic shot debacle.

Why not, it was fun. I wish getting the top tier rewards (blue pet) wasn't such a bad grind though.

I absolutely loved the event, even with my low level GF i was able to get enough to have skeleton dogs for all my toons, and a slew of savage enchantments. I loved fighting alongside everyone else to defend Neverwinter, i'd like them to have raids like this event, massive battles of 20 and more players against a horde of enemies.

I do agree it might be an inconvenience if held in Protectors Enclave, but they never had the patrolling enemies so the only issue was the lag cause by the closing portals, and that was fixed very quickly.

I would rather see the rewards attached to another event - like maybe a special CTA that used a customized instance of PE or something - it could be a revisit of Dread Legion where Valindra replaces the Zulkir, and the wights and such replace the regular enemies there...

I'd he okay with something similiar, but not the same one, i wanna feel like i was part of something that the newcomers can't do. Also it was a horrid lagfest on the server, so not sure we WANT it back. :P

I loved the event ... got one blue dog and several white ones, as well as a bunch of enchants that I later sold for pretty nice amounts.

And yeah, I would love some "random" events like this every now and then.
    Hoping for improvements...

Heck yes! I'd love to see something like this, IF they could do it without creating an unbearable amount of lag. Perhaps do something similar to STO's Red Alerts; when an invasion occurs players get a 'warning' that they can click in order to be sent to a special zone (which is an instanced replica of whatever zone is targeted, like protectors enclave for instance), each such zone taking somewhere between 5-10 players. Perhaps? Just a thought.

i absolutely loved the valindra invasion. i'd be down for more events like this. since m2 brought an "end" to valindra's current reign (or until someone resurrects her) perhaps whatever is going to be the major evil in neverwinter could start off with such an event. if they could make these events unique rather than regurgitate old content, that would be awesome... but i can understand that's a lot of work to do for something they'll use once. or maybe twice over a period of time.

She's a lich, doesn't she just pop on out of her philactory in a little while automatically? Unless there was a 4e change I was pretty sure that's the way it worked. So all of our work has been for nothing overall so far.

Well they had a Halloween event - the whole "Liars Night" thing.

I'd imagine it more to commemorate the 1 year anniversary...
