I'm relatively new at the game, and I have to admit I am a bit confused reading all the stuff on the forums about how Rangers can't compete in DPS at endgame, when my experience so far (admittedly only up to about level 40) has been that HR's are so ridiculously dominant in DPS that the alternatives feel obsolete. Where is it that Wizards and Rogues start massively overtaking the Ranger in the damage game? Is it just something that doesn't crop up until the level 60 elite dungeons?
HR's are competitive imo. They're single target dps is lower but their aoe competes with an equally geared wizard. They just don't have the cc for dungeons like a wizard does, leading them to need a wizard to cc everything or a tanky gf or gwf to control the aggro so they can put out max dps.
Now this is archery spec I'm talking about, the other specs have lower dps in pve, for some trade offs of buffing the party or survival in pvp.
The main problem is that HR's are almost a year behind the curve in getting builds, bis, etc figured out. Once that is caught up for the majority of players the situation will improve.
So what level is it where the lack of control/survivability on the HR becomes a significant issue? I noticed that the HR is a little behind in development (I love the huge splash page for "Pick Your Paragon Path!" there's one "ARE YOU SURE?" ...) but up through Throne of Idis (or whatever it's called) I'm consistently doing 50% - 80% more damage than the next highest on the damage table, so that must be a lot of control I'm not seeing much of yet (or a serious narrowing of that gap)

To the OP at level 40 the CWs haven't even gained acccess to two of their most important powers yet, and certainly not the major feats. By level 50 you will see them doing more damage and that means you will do less, but you will still out damage them. It is really at level 60 that things balance out most.
However even at level 60 in the epic dungeons HRs are very competitive and just as able to survive as the other squishy classes.
Obsidian Moonlight - Paladin Obsidian Oath - Warlock A whole lot of other Obsidian toons as well.
Okay, so this really isn't a problem until the current endgame content, and based on the patch notes they aren't doing a bad job at tackling balance issues so it might not even come up for me ^_^
Tell us your secret so Cryptic will nerf it tomorrow but we will abuse it today
the secret is in the build and knowing how to play it. it all comes down to taking the right feats and slotting the correct powers, and knowing how and when to use them
i will let you in on one of my secrets though: I do significantly more damage in dungeons/skirmishes with a tank in the party, particularly if that tank is a GF
if anyone is interested, i could be persuaded to share my build, but right now its 6am and i dont feel like doing it

I just use a critical build. Coupled with Prime Shot and Master of Archery a good portion of my attacks end up dealing criticals and refreshing my encounters for extra damage :>

Thanks for the replies
i regularly run dungeons (on my HR) with my fully T2 geared, max-specced CW guildies, and while they still beat me on DPS, its not by much
for comparison's sake, i have exactly ONE piece of T2 gear ATM
