my gf's defence is now over the 50% mark, does this render deflect useless? or will it still resist that 50% on deflected damage?

how it works. IF your defense negates 50% damage, deflect negates 50% of THAT damage that was negated by defence.

    ex:
You are given 100 (total damage given) - 50 (from total defenses since your defense negates 50%) = 50 (damage) |
50 (this is the damage after defense is taken into account) - 25 ( this is the deflection taking half of damage after defense) = 25 damage

    I don't understand the 50% deflection part.

Just looking for clarity. My hybrid-in-progress has 43.6% damage reduction via defence and 10% deflection severity.

    If I take 100 total damage 43.6% is negated. 100 - 43.6 = 56.4. Deflection then kicks in and takes 10% off of 56.4. 56.4 - 5.64 = 50.76 damage.
PSA: You don't need to grind Spinward Rise for your Elemental artifact main hand if you have some AD lying around. You can craft it via the Tyranny of Dragon's campaign screen.

No thats not deflection severity, that may be deflection chance. Everyone has 50% deflect severity by default. There may be some buffs, feats and features that add to it. But by default everyone has 50% deflect severity.

Deflection chance is what differs through everyone and can be stated for and altered much more easily.

You got it more or less right. Just change the % to actual deflect severity.

If 10% is your deflect chance. You have a 1/10 chance that deflection will be added to the end of that damage calculation. Otherwise you'd simply just take the 56 damage.

if deflection did kick in, then you'd suffer only 28 damage instead from that attack. (since it would be half of the 56 damage after the mitigation )

Yes, because A) it stacks linearly with defence and B) armor penetration and defence debuffs have no effect on it though this is mostly for pvp.

It probably has more uses in pvp but for pve gear if you are a gwf or gf (don't know much about gf didn't like em that much so mine has sat at level 20 since spring) you can start stacking deflect up once you start hitting hard core diminishing returns on defense for kiting gear for example.
