Suggestions to make Neverwinter more accessible

Neverwinter's a fairly fun game, but it's got some serious issues that largely seem to stem from MMO design rooted in the early 2000s. Which is sad, because there's a pretty fun game under some unnecessary mechanics.

First off, there's not a single reason why the auction house needs to mail you your item. Picking it up directly from where you purchase it doesn't just make sense, it's friendlier to players and therefor better for the game. In that same topic, mailboxes should not be limited to certain hubs; any hub a player is expected to spend time in should have a mailbox if you're going to insist on visiting them to pick anything up. It's an annoyance that doesn't even have a reason for existing.

Second, stop timegating things. I get it, you don't have much content. MMOs never get to be actually finished these days, we get it, you've got to get the game out in order to justify investments. But why are you hiding the little content you have behind twenty hour waits? And it doesn't even make sense; after that twenty hours, I can run VT as often as I want, so what's the design purpose for making me wait twenty hours before I can do it fifteen times a day? It's arbitrary and annoying to be told, "Hey, great, you've reached end game! Now wait twenty hours before you can have fun here."

Third, gearscore. For the love of god, rework it. My fresh 60 HR in almost full blues has a gearscore that qualifies him for VT, meanwhile a friend in full T1 doesn't come close. And yet, by the system, I'm the better choice - not because I'll actually contribute more, but because I've got the stats that gearscore values more. That's a huge flaw in something that is supposed to indicate your readiness for more difficult content.

Lastly, you've got a problem with GF. I think everyone can agree that there's hardly any compared to other classes. And if there's ever an immense scarcity of a class there's always a reason, and that reason is always within the game developer's power to fix. The class is seriously lackluster and dungeons with the Dragon Age 2 system of random-spawns-from-thin-air do not match well at all with a combat system that requires that you nearly root yourself in place to perform your tank duties.

There's a mailbox right by the auction house, so that's not really a big deal.

The lack of a mailbox in other zones seems to be an intentional decision by he devs, to make players spend at least some of their time in PE - during the Summer Festival, they added a mail courier partway through, due to player feedback/outcry, so it's certainly something they can do.

The timegating of events is annoying, no doubt. Personally, I'd prefer it if they simply issued dungeon delve keys similar to how they do with the dark fey keys or the ones form shadowmantle. Perhaps gate it to 1 key per X hours, or a flat Y keys per day...

Gearscore is a bit of a mystery, and I think that there should be a breakdown on the character sheet somewhere - something like "You gain X number of gearscore points per Y number of points in stat Z".

GFs are tricky. If aggro mechanics are too binary/strict, then enemies can be made to never aggro on other teammates, thereby allowing them to ignore enemies and just focus on DPS. OTOH, the current system makes having a taking barely necessary, and so teams often opt to go without. Given NW's faster pace of gameplay, what is needed is a way for GFs to force enemies to attack them, in a way more immediate than the current mark mechanics, and for a longer period of time. There's the decent beginnings of a system already, it just needs more work...

As far as the mailboxes, I find it extremely annoying to have to run back to PE everytime I need to collect something. The same with the bank, oft times I keep my higher ranked gear in the bank until I level, and it's a pain to have to keep running back and forth to collect it.

"There's a mailbox right near the AH," further proves the point that there's no reason to have that mechanic exist. So you have to buy things and run twenty feet to pick them up for no reason. It's a step without any purpose, so it should be trimmed.

Also PE server distribution needs work. If you're going to insist that I stay in the map for a couple minutes before letting me transfer, don't default me to the instance that already has a hundred and fifty when there are a dozen instances with under fifty.

edit: I agree mostly regarding tanks, but I really think that the entire class needs a reworking as the dungeon meta is typically far more about add management, and GF is atrocious at picking up adds the way they spawn in most fights.

I agree on the mailboxes. You can access the auction house anywhere in game and having to travel back to PE to pick up the item(s) gets annoying. I wish you could just pick them up through your mail icon as well as through gateway.

Now, if you could get to the AH remotely afterwards, maybe there'd be a reason for it to mail you stuff. But you can't, so you have to buy things and run twenty feet to pick them up for no reason. It's a step without any purpose, so it should be trimmed.

As for mailboxes... While some instances wouldn't make much sense (rp/lore wise) for mailboxes, others would. I wouldn't see anyone picking up their mail at the graveyard for example. But it'd be reasonable to have a courier at the Dwarf settlement at Icespire. Or an Elven made magical mailbox at Sharandar. My guess is that they left out the reasonable ones for consistency.

Totally agree on this. Never understood why it puts you into nearly full instances instead of the *half* full ones.

Indeed - when you first zone-in to PE, it should place you into the LEAST populated instance.

Perhaps an artifact that summons a mail courier is in order...

A simple fix for GFs, (at least in the short term), would be something like this - using mark on a target clears an enemy of aggro except for you, and forces it to attack you for 5 seconds. This ability has a 10 or 15 second cooldown for each enemy. While on cooldown, it behaves as it does now...

As far as I know, gear score is just the sum of all your stat boosts, not counting weapon enchants and utility slot stats - including movement buffs from gear itself. It also includes boons. HP add to gear score at a 4:1 ratio. If the OP has better GS than their friend, the reason is likely due to quality of enchantments slotted and possibly by feats. I'm not familiar with the HR feats but if there are any that add to one stat by a percentage of another, that will kick your GS up as well. It's very easy to have a fresh Conqueror GF with a GS of 12k in the same quality gear as another class that would have 8-9k, just due to the Reckless Attacker feat.

It's not really possible to break down the exact reason for the discrepancy without being able to look at both character sheets. Without that, consider whether you have feats that buff your stats or add extra HP. That's the most likely culprit if your enchants aren't sufficient to overcome their 2 piece set bonus (+400)

Since I really do not care about the "auction house/mailbox problem" I address these things you mentioned.

I think TIMEGATE is a natural thing to have. What you propose would soon result in that people whine they have done all the content and are more or less maxed. This game is hardcore already personally I think getting boons from expansion packs is a long GRIND process.

An absolute nightmare for me would be that expansions are more often relesed due to change that there is no time gate for VT or quests in expansion packs.

I am a hardcore player but I already feel stressed with 4(3 max level) characters about the expansion content and I really do not feel that I have time to play with my Ranger that is level 5. Your suggestion of removing timegates would create a problem since some hardcore players would finish all content and then whine for next expansion.

Now I agree with you that there is annoyence with GS that rewards not equal for different stats, but that is known to me so I take that in consideration.

None of the OP's points are an "accessibility" issue. Nothing refers to deaf, blind, or otherwise handicapped players.

Wasted click due to (typical) badly-phrased thread title. -sigh-

I could reiterate what previous people have already said - but I won't waste any more of your time.
