It came to my attention while running a dungeon the other day that not every one rolls a natural 20 on their Perception check (PnP DC of 30) and recognize a mimic when they see one or memorized their common ambush locations.
I expect Mimics will improve their tactic eventually so that even someone who knows what they're looking for won't be able to tell the difference. so arm yourself with knowledge against these creatures and learn to tell the difference.
In this picture we learn that if you try to stand the edge of a Mimic You will be able to step right through it.
And here we have a regular chest that you can stand on top of.
This concludes today's lesson. Be safe and take care.

The OP's method is actually the most reliable method because it is likely very difficult for Cryptic to change the volume of a monster compared to a real object.
The reason why the green bag icon reticule is insufficient is because some rare legitimate chests don't use a bag icon. They use something else entirely, like a wheel cog icon. I believe there may even be one of those at the entrance of the new Artifact Recovery quest (though I could be mistakenly remembering that one).
So, perhaps a better way of saying it is look for the absence of a chest icon.
Also, there have been rumors that Cryptic want to make Mimics either harder to spot or indistinguishable from normal chests, so the reticule checking method may disappear entirely.
That is an interesting difference. I don't think I've ever seen that, so it could be new.
If it's a regular chest, woohoo. If it's a mimic, just murder it for its glorious loot.
yep. definitely a mimic.
Nice capture
Been around as long as I've been playing, so it's not new.
Super sweet ScreenShot.
It needs more teeth and less blinding whiteness! But yes, very dynamic screenshot.
Yeah, it tends to do it when enemies are hanging around it, quite often fiddling with it, lol.
Incidentally, that's another (rarer) way to tell its an obvious Mimic!
That would be cool. Maybe the TR should be the one that could (like for traps) check before if something is a mimic or not.
Since TRs already have traps, think it would be funnier if a Fighter (the rarer classes in a group), e.g. GF could "Taunt" a Mimic. If it responds in some subtle way, its a Mimic. They could make it only wasting a Daily could taunt!
Even kinda fits from a story perspective, though I have no idea if it fits with DnD and 4e.
