[Guide / Spoiler] How to fight Oculus (secret boss) in Spellplague Caverns

I'm not sure whether a) this is the right place to post this or b) if it's been posted before, but since I discovered how to fight the secret boss in Spellplague and other people may or may not know how to, I might as well just post this.

NOTE: This does NOT grant the achievement "Eye Chirurgeon" if you run the epic version. You do get the achievement on normal, but the title seems bugged right now (achievement does not give the title).

However, you can fight the boss in both Epic and Normal versions.

Oculus the Inflamed is the secret boss in Spellplague Caverns.

Currently, the reason why you cannot fight the boss as you should be able to (in one run), is because the second orb to unlock the boss is currently blocked off by an invisible wall. As such, in order to fight the boss, you will need to enter the dungeon twice.

1. Enter the dungeon (epic or normal, doesn't matter). Kill the first boss, Plague Reaver, and kill the adds or draw them away from the boss area. To the left of the room, in one of the crevices, you will find a glowing orb (similar to the door switches). Take it. You can leave the dungeon after this or finish it, but unless you already have one of these orbs from a previous run, you will not be able to access the secret boss in this run. (Spawning Pits area)

2. Repeat the above step but continue on in the dungeon.
3. In the area just before the boss (straight after you've jumped off the cliff), behind the campfire, you will find a wall "split" into 3 sections. On the 3rd section (to your right), there should be an interactable spot. If you stand directly in front, you will get hurt by some sort of spike that comes out every time you click it, so stand a little to the side and click it to place the orb. Do the same with the left side. The door should open after you place both orbs.

4. Enter, kill the trash mobs (there's a lot of small blue fire eye things), and at the end, you'll come to the boss. He's not very hard, but will summon a lot of Blue Fire Eye things, which can get annoying especially in the epic version. Once you kill him, you can access the treasure chest behind him.

If you want to know the location of the second (inaccessible right now) orb, it's in the area where you fight the second boss, Mouth of Madness. It's to the left, but it's behind an invisible wall.
Screens:
http://s1.night.jrurl.at/mouth1.PNG - boss area
http://s1.night.jrurl.at/orb2.PNG - orb
http://s1.night.jrurl.at/orb2-area.PNG - where the orb is in respect to the rest of the area

Also it might have just been coincidence but the boss does drop quite a lot of enchants/runestones (rank 4s), so it's a potentially nice farming area (does take a while though).

Hope this helps!

So if I do this on normal mode, I get a title?

    Yeah... this is legit.

I just ran normal Spell Plague to check and the door exists. Going to run it with a guildy to get the second eye and do the boss.

    Edit:

My Scroll of Blue Flame won't activate if I use it, though.

Looks like the scroll is broken/not yet implemented. Not sure if the devs know about it, but it would have been interesting to use >:

I hope they fix that issue and the issue with the second orb sometime soon, running the dungeon twice (even coming out after first boss) takes a while.

Bring a rogue, have someone stand with their back to the second orb, teleport behind them, loot orb, teleport out.

Do in 1 dungeon run :D

Just tested this, it does not work because it's a wall/boundary, not simply an obstacle.

You're doing it wrong since that's how I killed Oculus :)

I suggest using a GF since they can reliably back up. Block and then back up against the orb wall. You can also use a bird companion apparently but I've never tried it.

Alright, I'll test that and get back to you (and if it works, add it to the guide) on it. Also if it works with bird companion, it should theoretically work with any other companion so long as you can back it against the wall or past it (except for Ioun Stone or something).

    Update:

Scroll of Blue Flame does work, you need to be in a specific range of the target and it does not work on allies or the Trade of Blades dummies. The range is about the same range that you move in to aggro most things (I believe), though more accurately it's probably something like 30'. It's pretty cute, actually. Basically, just open your invent after you hover on your target and double-click the scroll. 3 uses, as it says. Have not tried in PvP but I don't think it'd work.

I haven't gotten around to testing the 2nd orb thing yet (because lazy).

One Addition: Drops from Boss are the same for normal and epic version.

Seems like the title's bugged too, yeah. But you do get the achievement. I think I submitted a ticket about it a few weeks ago, and obviously no answer but it's out there, I suppose.

    Update:

Seems like they've fixed the second orb. It's been moved to where the nature kit is, on the right wall of the 2nd boss area. Will update the guide and screenshots soon. I'm not sure about the title as of yet - I have not tried to get it on a new character, but my current character which has the achievement from before this fix is still unable to use the title.

Just did it, both orbs work, it gives achievement(on normal), no title.

P.S. Thanks for the guide, really useful. :)

And last patch fixed Scroll of Blue Fire:

"Oculus the Inflamed no longer drops the Scroll of Blue Fire. This item was dropping in error and has been removed from Oculus. The Scroll of Blue Fire has been updated to be Grey quality. It's sell price is unaffected."

It's not behind invisible wall on the normal version, but it's still behind the invis wall on epic. Also Scroll of Blue Fire always worked, it just had a range limit.

I just did this solo with my CW. Beat it on the first try - not very hard. You want to keep moving, take out adds, then turn to the boss and dish out some damage when the adds are down to a few, then repeat as more adds come out. With the CW I used freeze time, tabbed entangling force and of course shards, all in combination. if possible try to get the boss and the blue eyes with shards to speed thing up. I cast a few singularities but it wasn't necessary. Towards the end I got impatient and used ice knife to speed up killing the boss once I realized I didn't need to save my singularity for mob waves. his big attack only takes out about a third of your hit points and is pretty easy to avoid anyway, just teleport or walk away from the red circle.

BTW, the bug with the invisible wall is fixed. I overlooked the first orb which is near the first boss, but picked up the second orb near the 3rd boss (no invisible wall there anymore) finished the dungeons, exited and quickly reentered and I was back at the beginning of an empty dungeon and quickly found the second orb. No more scroll drop from oculus though. I don't think I got any new title either, though I did get the achievement.

If you were on normal, then yes, the orb has been moved next to the nature kit. I need to update the guide on that (I'm extremely lazy). On epic, I haven't looked recently as I've stopped doing the dungeon as much since the CW shield nerf (lazy, again), but I'll check again sometime.

Oh, this one is necro :P

They closed the path to this boss, as far as I know so the blue scrolls now are kind of unique...

Wait, they removed the scrolls of blue fire from Occulus? They just deleted an item that was working and was one of the more unique items in the game? I have defended Perfect World/Cryptic a lot but this is just plain unacceptable.

Edit: Are there any plans to add these in later on at least? It seems weird they would design an item and then remove it from the game for no reason. Occulus seems like a good drop location for it though.
Neverwinter players are stubborn things....until you strip them down to bone. (Cursed players, my flowers, MINE!) Oh how I plotted their demise.

Yeah, it's been removed from the game (was an awesome and fun item though... D:). Boss can still be fought though, but yeah, I need to update the guide with that (read: I'm still kinda lazy atm).

For me its bugged since release and nothing have done about it. The second orb is behind a invisible wall, so you have to make the dungeon twice to get in. Then you got the bossaggro before the invisible wall so you have to hurry if you want to get in the bossfight.

Managed it on epic today. Fight him, killed him....but didnt got the achievment. So is it still buggy and Ctryptic/PWe doesnt care about it or do you just get the acheiment if you beat him in normal unepic SP?

In order to get the achievement you have to be the one to land the killing blow.
