I've heard two sides to this story. Some say more HP, others say more defense.
So, would you take 1232 HP (2x R6 Radiants) or 300 defense (2x R6 Azures)?
The trade-offs will be;
If slotting Radiants - ~24000 HP & ~2200 defense
If slotting Azures - ~22800 HP & ~2500 defense
I am aiming for a tanky Cleric, if it means anything.
PSA: You don't need to grind Spinward Rise for your Elemental artifact main hand if you have some AD lying around. You can craft it via the Tyranny of Dragon's campaign screen.
In any case, HP are important and I would stack them. I am at 32k with 2700 Def (+Full foresight) and I found that it's superb for both worlds. Since burst healing can't beat burst damage then staying alive is the key. I would slot every Defense enchant with the higher Radiant I could afford, and I would gather gear to get me to 35% damage reduction without Foresight.
Primarily PvE. Currently I am at 1800 defense (unenchanted) and am comfortable with it in PvP (I've never been one-shotted, even when caught in the open), so I believe if I push it to the 2200 - 2500 mark I'll be a fairly tough nut when it comes to PvP.
Also, I haven't got one yet buy does a Stone give you the HP from a slotted Empowered Runestone?

Radiant 7s on defense slots. 2x Ancient Priest Ring of Burning Fire, Acient Brawler's Necklace of Guts, Thickgristle's Buckle and all points in WIS and CON. Plus it's a dwarf.
I'm guessing (not least by your sig) that this is a dwarf cleric.
What's your CON?
I think I'm on about 2.2k def and 24k HP (with no campfire etc buffs) and feel tanky enough for most things, though I do swap into regen blues for PvP.
Oh, makes sense. Can't hope to match that as a human with only 14 in constitution.
At the moment I have a Ancient Slavemaster's Necklace & Belt and two of the Ancient Priest's Rings, but only wearing one as I haven't yet got any enchants in place to replace the 106 power & crit I will lose from my Abolethic Ring.
I've got the Ancient Brawler's Necklace as well, saving it for my Stone.

Yes, it's a dwarf cleric and instead of taking the typical DEX/CON way for PvP, I went WIS/CON for the added heal bonus and control resist (it's 18%). The Constitution is 19 with Campfire, and here is the sheet :

I've finished all T2 and CN with a low GS...
I believe that there's a quite noticeable increment until you reach 2000Def... after that I didn't notice much.
...samething for recovery - 3100gs after that affects Action Points.
I also prefer using a companion than a CAT or stone...
For example my blue wererat does not die in most dungeon and in most of the bosses if you play properly.
The main thing to consider is how much effective damage you can take. When you use Astral Shield, Hallowed Ground, Divine Armor, or anything that adds to Damage Resistance, then HP is the clear winner over Defense. The tricky part is that if you push up HP, you end up needing to self-heal more HP. Defense makes you take less HP's of damage, thus you need less self-healing. That's what would worry me. Though the differences listed in the first post would probably be indistinguishable form each other. We're just talking about 300 defense or 1200 HP.

Two sides of the same coin, really. If you have lots of HP, you need to heal more but you also need to take more damage to start worrying. For instance if you have 30k hp and get hit for 5k, it's entirely different than getting hit for the same amount of damage when at 23k.
Plus, all the 'grant % of HP as temp HP' checks maximum hit points. So I guess, boosting both stats is the way to go.
I think mixing hp and def is the best way but that just my OP. HP is awesome for regen thats for sure.

I don't know about the Stone.

Durik
The HP are 31,980 in-game. Working on getting the Grand Templar's Armor which will add a Radiant 7 in the mix (+170 hp)
