  There are a few places where a companion can drop. Tower of Celadane (mission at the end of the third zone of Sharandar) can drop a Blink Dog. Call to Arms events can also drop a companion (but not the most recent Pit Fight CtA, that one had a mount). Also various events have had a companion associated with it, the Pig from the Midsummer festival and the Skeleton Warrior from the Haloween event. The majority of those companions are "green" quality, but the Skeletal Dog from the launch event was "Blue".

  I believe there's a small chance to get a companion from the end chest in the tower (forget the boss's name... starts with C) in Malabog's Realm (third zone of the Sharandar campaign.) Haven't gotten it myself, and I may be remembering wrong.
  
  Green companions could be earned in some of the events (pig from Midsummer Festival, helmite ghost from Straight to Helm CTA, skeleton warrior from Masquerade.) I'm unaware of any higher level companions available outside zen shop, except the purple angel for 360 Ardent Coins.

  The Blink Dog from Tower of Celadaine has a very low drop rate, probably in the 1-2% range. I did get one, eventually, but it took perhaps 40+ attempts.
