Questions for a new player

My wife and I are coming to play a bit but just had a few questions. First I didn't see a chat forum for new players so apologize if this has been asked, but what is the end game like. I see that there are a T1 and T2 dungeon but any raids? If no raids do they plan to add them in from developer discussions or anything?

Also is this game truly free to play or do I need to purchase stuff from the stores? I notice some of the packs give you things such as races and such, do the races have any huge advantage over others? We play quite a bit so if it is something we can farm in game we will most likely do it that way. Just curious if everything is unlock-able by just playing?

I assume a cleric/guardian combo is wanted for dungeons, any issues with having this as a duo setup?

Thanks in advance.

I'm still new here myself, so the only question I think I can answer for ya wasn't really a question! :-)

The Moonstone Mask thread in the Player Corner looks to be the best spot for questions and intros as well as just chat.

    Sorry I couldn't help more.

I'm not sure what raids are as I've only ever played cryptic's STO, CO, and this. But in this game there are dungeons, which can be fairly time consuming and sometimes frustrating. There are skirmishes which I guess are like mini-raids? But with minimal rewards, sometimes special low-value rewards. And there is PvP, but maps are limited.

There are dailies for earning AD, and user created foundry maps for low stress fun.

The game is truly free to play and you can do pretty well without spending anything. That won't stop you wanting to though, because while really it isn't pay to win, you can get winning stats a lot faster buying gear and enchants and pets than by farming them. Mostly you can get everything by farming and managing your resources wisely though. There are some special companions and things you can't get without paying in some way, but generally they are vanity items, not needed and no real advantage to having them. Same for the special classes/races.. pure vanity. Some races (that everyone has access to) are perhaps better suited to certain classes or playstyles or builds than others. But that has nothing to do with whether you spend or not.

Clerics and Guardians are usually wanted. Really the only class that has trouble getting into a group sometimes is the Great Weapon Fighter, but that situation might improve in the near future. A cleric and guardian duo in regular content is solid, will succeed almost always, but might take just a little longer doing some of the harder ones. Most of it they would likely breeze through.

If you are going to play, take your time leveling, and don't rush through it.. Leveling is really fast in this game, and to me it's the most fun, especially the first few times.

Hope that helps in some way.

    1. No raids, i.e. greater than 5-man party content.
    2. No stated plans for raids.
    3. Unlike many freemium MMOs in my experience, this one is truly free to play. Though if you do pay/use the cash shop to your advantage, you can gain an enormous resource advantage over other players. The point is that this resource advantage has no real uses outside of fully unstructured, unsupported and unofficial group PvP.
    4. Races from purchased packs grant no noticeable advantages. What little differences there are between races are for min-maxing in max-level and serious PvP.
    5. Everything that has gameplay impact is unlockable just by playing currently. The exception are some weapon enhancements that are mostly used for visuals and the new upcoming Module may introduce bonuses from companions that could make a significant impact in PvE-only gameplay, but most (all?) the companions with bonuses can be resold in-game.
    6. No issues with Cleric/Guardian combo while levelling or endgame. However, you should note that this game is not like WoW or traditional MMOs: healers are do not have strong burst healing. Clerics are mostly optimized for mitigating incoming damage. Also, you may want to add good Control Wizards to your Friends list from the start - they are critical in this game due to the type of minion/add-heavy content.

Just an example of one that can't (at this time anyway..)

I have the Quickling companion.. it's a max-lev 20 green offensive companion. It is an account unlock and binds on pickup. It came from a special weekend offer where if you transferred a certain amount of zen to the server during that time interval, it unlocked that and a wolf mount that is too small for anyone but a halfling to ride, and slow besides. (+50%)

It's a pretty cool little companion though, for foundries and such. Equip it well and it rarely dies, and does some pretty nice tricks. Its active bonus when module 2 is released is +100 movement bonus, which is very small. I'd never summon it in an epic dungeon though..

Edit--- hmmm.. I just noticed that the bottom of that screenshot says it's available in the zen market. I never saw it there, but maybe it is. In which case, apologies for wasting your time.

It is also missing its sword, which doesn't seem to stop it from trying to stab enemies with it.

lol.. =) Didn't realize it was supposed to have one- just assumed it was using claws. Oh well.. I was transferring the zen anyway. I kind of like it as it is. A bit primal. Also one thing I kinda noticed about it.. it always seems to try to get to the opposite side of my opponent and get us combat advantage, which is the main benefit of striker companions in solo content anyway, in my opinion.

OP- I'm sorry for hijacking your thread. Shutting up now. =D

once you hit level 60, you will have access to the sharandar area which includes daily quests to work towards campaign bonuses in the way of boons. boons will give stat bonuses and other advantages depending on what you choose. soon, the new shadowmantle module will include the dread ring area and more campaign bonuses for your character.

if you are in a guild, you will also have access to gauntlegrym which consists of three parts: a pve part, a 20v20 pvp part and a dungeon delve part. the first part consists of a series of tasks for the two competing factions: the luskan raiders and the delzoun explorers (your guild is sided with one or the other). the winner of the first part is granted a pvp boost. in the pvp part, you can enter the queue as a group of five or a partial group, but you will be part of a 5-man team combined with three other teams. the objective is to strategically maintain most of the five cap points... the first team to 3000 wins. grym coin and glory are the rewards for pvp. you can also choose to continue pve if pvp isn't your thing and help your pvp team win additional boosts. if your faction wins the two parts, you will have the choice of entering a T2 or a T1 mini dungeon. there is only a single boss in these dungeons and the end chest grants grym coin. gauntlegrym is a scheduled event just like dungeon delves.

other than those things, you can run dungeons for gear as upgrades or to sell on the auction house. you can also pvp. most first time level 60s are trying to acquire their first epic set... the easiest acquired being from gauntlegrym or pvp. gauntlegrym provides a T2 pvp epic set while the vendor in the trade of blades in protector's enclave provides a T1 set. running T1 dungeons also provides unicorn seals which provides some nice T1 epic gear. T2 dungeons provide drake seals which provide some upgrades to carry you over to better gear.

there are also professions as well as daily quests from rhix and lord neverember that provide you with rough astral diamonds. at level 60, your opportunities to gain rough AD increase and these are just some of the ways to do that.

anyway... i'm sure i forgot some things in there... but if you have any questions, feel free to PM me or ask here. the most important thing is to have fun. :)

The companions that come from the packs can't be sold or traded. The Vicious Dire Wolf that comes in the Guardian of Neverwinter pack is good, but only for leveling and solo (that is non-5 player party) play. Probably the most popular of the non-augment companions is the cleric, which you can get for free. Since you'll have a PC cleric, you might choose another free companion though.
