Usually single server or server merge means game is failing. This can't be the case here --- have player numbers dropped???

We've been planning the Shard Merge since Beta, and have been optimizing our software and hardware so that we can merge the three shards as soon as possible. More info is available on our Extended FAQ!

This has always been the plan and it is how their other two games work already. It is not a matter of lowering capacity to meet a lower population. A Cryptic Engine shard is not like, for example, a WoW server. It is more like an entire WoW Battlegroup. One Cryptic Engine shard = many traditional MMO servers with the ability to scale up for growth as needed.

So we're moving to better servers, cool!

How are they better/ how are they a tech upgrade? Storage capacity I imagine, but would the new servers have a bit more bite behind them to perhaps reduce instance of rubberbanding/lagging? Not saying the current servers play a part in that, as I have no clue, just curious ^_^.

One server for an MMO has already been done. DCUO has done this a little over a year ago. It's not so much as one server, but a bunch working together. The game already has traits of this by having multiple instances of the same instance. Game will pretty much remain the same, just more players to interact with is they most noticeable change and that isn't a bad thing.

Actually that makes your hope a reality. All servers on one shard = no cross-server PvP, sure. But that's only because all of that PVP will be located on a single shard now. So you'll get to fight plenty of people from beholder, dragon, or mindflayer (whichever one you weren't on) same as you would if there was some sort of cross-server PvP.

A better example of this would be Cryptics other two games. Both are single shard, and have been from their inception, and run on the same engine as NW. The only reason NW didn't start as a single shard was to deal with the initial massive rush of players as a temporary measure. It was always intended to be a single shard game from the very beginning.

Open World is not Cross Server. Open world would be PVP anywhere two players can meet (with a probable exception of hubs, like the Enclave).

There was no reason for hope from the beginning. As the website and FAQ both mention, it's always been the goal to have a single shard.

There was a news about more pvp contents implemented on the Neverwinter Asia included Open World pvp but till now i don't think they launched the game there. Hopefully we will get some pvp contents sooner or later (much better sooner) and maybe open world pvp will be one of the new content

PvP needs to go onto it's own server for those that enjoy it, we have already seen the issues here with mixing PvP and PvE.

That only really applies to forced open world PvP, as you can go through the game from 1-60 without any forced PvP then it doesn't really apply.

    Gauntlegrym is optional remember.

Yes I realize that, but as we have seen whenever they make an "adjustment" to classes for PvP it has impact on the playability of strictly PvE players as well. Not to mention Gauntylgrim has issues as well that need to be resolved, even as an optional section of the game.

Shard merge already? thats a bit too early

In my opinion though server merges are usually signs to find out the best of the best out of player/guild. I know that the game havent reached maybe 30% of its content (classes/paragon paths/races), so how can players bring out the best of them if they build on something in common paths and common builds.

Actually Neverwinter at 100% game content i would say would be the most unique and the best MMORPG ever with a lot of paths to build on a single class, not to add races in it and limited active/passive skill slots giving each class thousands of possibilities to build on.

well i would suggest to maybe think of adding more contents to the game rather than server merging. Hoping for reactions from the DEVS =)
