This bug has hit me twice this week. The last one just now.
While in Protector's Enclave and in a laggy instance, there is the possibility of deleting an email with items in it without the warning dialogue appearing - but the real issue is that this is happening when you're trying to delete an email the precedes it in the mailbox.
Tonight, I was deleting my old email and just when I clicked on the confirmation dialogue, the mail screen refreshed and showed the next email which had my 4 stacks of companion runes in them. Then the dialogue window and that email with items in it disappeared. And the message I was trying to delete remained.
Earlier this week, I was doing the same thing for a block of old emails. Got going "fast" clicking and deleting. Then the mail screen glitched and when it came back, I had deleted 2 more emails beyond my batch of old emails. Those two emails contained my blue shard collection. Once again, no warning dialogue appeared on the screen saying you're about to delete an email with items in it. And it happened when a lag spike occurred.
I reported this to the GM earlier this week and again tonight, but I don't have much hope for a positive response as the reply to my first report was simply to file a bug report. No response on getting my items back.
So, I am out my blue shard collection and now, my rank 4 companion rune collection and the time I spent doing the quests to collect them.
While these 2 collections aren't critical to my game play, it makes me too afraid to touch my emails with my collection of purple gear, rank 4 item runes (just hit 90+ on all 4 stacks), and my savage runes.
With this response provided by customer support, I recommend at the very least that everyone stop deleting their mail on laggy instances. And if you really value your time, stop playing. This company doesn't seem to value your time.
I get the warning dialogue even after I've taken the item attached to the mail.
I take the item, open inventory bag, verify the item is there, delete mail, and still get the warning dialogue.
I get that, too. But I discovered that if I click on another email and then go back to the email I want to delete, the item message doesn't trigger. See if that works for you.

I had a bug months ago that just deleted from my email when trying to move the items from email to my bag. I didn't realize the bag was a slot short, went to move it, it deleted about 75 enchants I had. I sent a ticket, got the standard response after 19 days, and ticket closed (resubmit if the problem happens again), and gave up. One of the reasons I don't play anymore.
Customer Service Manager gave the final word today on replacing my items.
"Unfortunately, I am not able to recover or replace any of the items that may have been lost due to mail deletion. I am very sorry for any inconvenience and frustration caused by this issue."
I am SOOO glad I did not pay for this game. Now if only I could get back my time lost playing the epic dungeons collecting my two emails worth of blue shards and the myriad of missions, skill nodes, and encounters played and runes fused to collect the 5 stacks of rank 4 runes (avg 30-50 per stack).
Lesson learned - BUYER BEWARE: Cryptic is unable to remedy problems caused by their own game engine flaws. For me this has sealed the deal. I am never spending a dime on any of their games.
My workaround for this is to take the item, then click on an email I've already opened (such as the emails I get for race/class specific quests), then switch back to the email that held the attachment. THEN delete it. If that message shows up again, make absolutely sure that you've taken the item, then try again (yep... that's happened to me).
*sings* "I like Gammera! He's so neat!!! He is full of turtle meat!!!"
"Hah! You are doomed! You're only armed with that pathetic excuse for a musical instrument!!!" *the Savage Beast moments before Lonnehart the Bard used music to soothe him... then beat him to death with his Fat Lute*
If a this is your definition of a a fatal in-game bug id hate to see what you would call a game killing bug possibly the inability to dye a peice of armor or a peice of armor not appearing right on the character moddle.
"Possibly we humans can exist without actually having to fight. But many of us have chosen to fight. For what reason? To protect something? Protect what? Ourselves? The future? If we kill people to protect ourselves and this future, then what sort of future is it, and what will we have become? There is no future for those who have died. And what of those who did the killing? Is happiness to be found in a future that is grasped with blood stained hands? Is that the truth?"
